I agree. I'm pretty introverted so I normally don't start conversations with people when I'm out and about, but if someone starts a conversation with me it kinda cheers me up a bit.
@Papa Pjort I'm from Romania and it's not too different there, but I think in general, in the west in appropriate situations small talk is ok. You make Eastern Europe sound worse than it is haha
As someone who deals with a toxic mentality while at work, a friendly interaction like small talk really snaps me out of my bad thoughts and brightens my mood. I can never be the one to start small talk so I appreciate Zach for being one of those people who helps struggling introverts like myself.
If it looks like the person checking me out or whatever is having a bad day I always try to be extra nice to them.
A completely neutral conversation (small talk friendly) doesn't get me out of the bad mood though, as a cashier. That's just another thing of the job. Only an exceptional conversation will actually make me happier, and those are really rare for me. But overall I'd rather not have a conversation, especially hours into my shift.

I sometimes take my African Pygmy Hedgehog out for education events and if I’m going to a shop I’ll take him in with me in his little carrier and when I’m paying I always say “hey would you like to meet a hedgehog” and it ALWAYS makes their day and it makes me feel warm inside. I even got him out for the drive-thru window at KFC so they could all get a little pet at him. Making other people’s day better makes my day better.

Callsign JJC yeah but that’s you, each to their own dude. They’re obviously not serious and there’s obviously no issue his end. It’s friendly. Americans are a bit strange to me sometimes in that they take taking the piss out of someone not as a joke but a serious attack. When I went to America, what is standard very mild banter in the U.K. is weirdly shocking in America, you get called witty or a ‘savage’ by younger people lol when you have said something that would be real mild in the UK. Just an observation not a criticism of US or anything, I’m sure there is American humour I will never fully get! :) btw thanks for striking up conversations. As dumb as it sounds, as a disabled woman with Tourette’s I feel so self conscious in public and see people’s looks like I’m crazy and they stay away. If someone sees and still treats me like a human being it makes a huge difference to my day. Sorry to ramble just wanted to say thanks for doing that I hope you’re happy and healthy, much love!
I’m an introvert but I don’t mind friendly conversation! Nothing wrong with being courteous to one another. I know when I worked in customer service, it made my bad days a bit better when someone simply asked me how my day was going.

I agree with Zach. I work in retail, have for a decade. When you spend 40 hours a week somewhere, it does brighten your day when a customer is friendly and conversational. At least I find it to be. But with respect to hila and Ethans point, I don't start conversations with customers
I agree. 8 years in retail, 6 of those stuck at a cash register, sometimes when you go on autopilot for hours it gets mind numbing and a customer that actually isn’t on autopilot either just saying hi or asking how my day is makes me feel good.

Yep! I used to work at a shop where they made you try to start a conversation with every customer. Most of the time it was really embarrassing because most people obviously didn't want to have a chat with some kid working in a Japanese stationery shop, but when you did occasionally speak to someone friendly it would make your day. I always go for more of a Zach attitude as a customer because I know how much it sucks being on the other end of that scenario.

Honestly usually I try to ask people who are serving me how’s their day and try to make them smile because I know it’s rough sometimes and 99% of the time I know they appreciate it and it brightens them up.

Me too. Critics say these are the worst episodes but in my opinion, they are the best. I love the dynamic between them all. But I love the guests who have similar quirky personalities and don't take Ethan too seriously and bounce off his personality, like Post Malone and Oliver Tree. Trisha's episodes are hilarious too lol
For me personally it depends on the guest. something down to earth like the William Osmon Podcast was imo one of the best podcasts. But if it's a guest I don't know or don't care about it can do the opposite and make it borderline unwatchable.

As a hairstylist, it’s totally okay to be like “I don’t want to have a conversation right now.” Tip appropriately and we’ll love you just as much as our other clients. Personally, I’d prefer to work in silence, but I make small talk at the start to test whether or not my client wants to talk that day, and they always take the bait if they feel like talking that day. If not, I’ll only talk to you about your hair.

ArtificialFertilizer yes you tip them. Most stylists will still do pretty well if you don’t tip, though it’s considered rude. Unless of course you work at a corporate salon like myself, then you’ll make trash without it.

I'm a cashier, and I enjoy it when customers talk to me. Especially when they become regulars. Brightens my day for sure.
hairsylist related: the barbershop i go to allows you to select ahead of time whether or not you want to have a "quiet chair option" or something so essentially whoever is doing your hair knows you dont want to have small talk before you even get there. its cool.

When I worked for Starbucks we were required to “make conversation” with every single person in the drive thru and we had to take their payment, give them their order and “make a connection” with them. My DM even recorded me to see if I kept asking the same thing to people. Most people were annoyed. A few enjoyed it. I hated it. Most employees don’t want to have a conversation, but companies insist people love it lol

as someone who works in customer service, a simple "hows your day going?" is so so nice. doesnt even have to be small talk, just some nice acknowledgment. so many rude people you have to deal with that even just one nice encounter can brighten up your entire day

i have social anxiety, so i try to avoid small talk as much as possible. but when a server says 'have a good day' to me, i always say 'thank you, you too.' i know a lot of people will just say 'thanks' and leave it at that. i hope i can contribute to brightening up someone's day, even in a little way.

i used to be a cashier for H-E-B and it was really easy to pick up on people’s mood based on just asking “hi, how are you?” and if the person didn’t answer me, i wouldn’t make any conversation unless they spoke back to me. and honestly, it’s great for both of us. as a cashier and a representative of a company, you’re expected to be happy, friendly, and talkative. but don’t force it. lots of times, there’s people who have anxiety or who are just having a bad day and they would really rather not have a conversation with this stranger. so i think people who work in customer service should pay attention to the mood of customers in order to tell what kind of service they need to provide. some people love to talk, and others enjoy small chit chat, and some people just want silence between the transactions. picking up a vibe is key to making your customers happy and more likely to come back to your store. ⭐️

The change in Hila from the beginning of the channel/podcast as a podcaster and entertainer is a literal evolution. She used to be so shy and quiet and now you can really notice how much of a presence she is on the show. Don't get me wrong, I've been an Hila Kleiner since day one but you can tell she has really grown over time.
She has grown so much and learned to speak up without ever being disrespectful. Love her!

I’m not an extrovert so I pretty much despise small talk 99% of the time, that being said, there have definitely been days that had been going bad and just the small act of a kind stranger saying hello with a smile or sounding like they genuinely cared whether my day was good or bad made all the difference in changing my mood to a more positive one for the remainder of the day.

Yourself Bruh, barbers and hairstylists have such a wealth of experience dealing with different types of people, I really believe that they understand and won't be offended if you'd prefer a quiet, relaxing haircut without conversation. Don't forget that you're essentially doing them a favour by paying for and receiving their services, which supports their livelihood/business.

When someone at the grocery store looks sad I just put the Spanish setting on the self checkout machine. I just sit back let my dad scream and swear at the machine. It makes them laugh almost every time

I get really uncomfortable when I’m a customer and the person working isn’t friendly. I’ve been in customer service for 10 years and I would so much rather have someone just try to connect with me for a second rather than be dead silent. And that is coming from me who is extremely shy and introverted
Its funny how when you get paid your personality can change. People think I am this outgoing chatty person but when I am off the clock I am a withdrawn hermit. Unless dealing with service workers, then I try to engage.

I work in retail and theres a point where work just drains you. I dont make conversation but if a customer starts I’ll continue, it really just drains all the personality from you. Im really talkative and happy outside of work

I've always made it a point to be as polite, efficient and easy going as possible when dealing with customer service etc. I've been there and I get how it can be.
Small talk isnt evil if you sense that opening and dont have anyone waiting on/behind you, but just make their job as easy as possible and give them the space to do it. A smile doesnt hurt either but I dont think its expected.
