  • In part 1 of this mini-series, Keith briefly examines what the Catholic Church teaches about the "real presence of Jesus" in the Eucharist. Keith shows that this was the belief of the early Church. Why have Protestants rejected it?

I tend to believe that the Shroud of Turin is authentic. True, there are a few stumbling blocks against it such as the height of the person imprinted. But, it is hard brush aside all the other evidence.
The reconstruction of the person based upon the Shroud is very interesting. It shows a man that it somewhat handsome with a gentle disposition. The likeness of the Christ has no bearing on faith , of course.

Well he looked unique like any human, so yes, though we agree he was plain in appearance.
More importantly we're not claiming Jesus wasn't a man and diaphysite Christology(the orthodox position which Papists and Prot's agree on) doesn't claim that Jesus had the accidents of manhood and the essence of God but that he truly had two natures as one person. So it would seem that whatever the Church Father's were intending to teach it wasn't transubstantiation.

I'd like to add a poignant point about my conversion to Catholicism: So many people seem to have had the most trouble with the Catholic reverence of Mary, as Mother of God and worthy of honor. It was actually this high regard of the Virgin Mary that was central to my embracing of the church. Fr Donald Calloway, in his beautiful book, "Under the Mantle," was the basic turning point for my being drawn into the truth of Catholicism. May I suggest that anyone who loves Our Lady or wishes a deeper love for and understanding of her read this richly gracious work; an obviously inspired labor of love. Brought me into the fold of the true Church.

@heartofpuregold when I'm meditating on the joyful mysteries I feel connected to both Mary and Joseph and I feel like being a parent is really what drives that feeling. The thought if the struggles and the joys of parents and the trials, obedience and dedication that Mary and Joseph both model is so humbling and beautiful. The purity and love of the holy family gives me great hope and motivation towards holiness.

The Real Presence is HUGE!!! Consider how the consecrated Host is treated: a.) it reserved in the tabernacle with a red lamp adjacent which is always lit. b.) The faithful are encouraged to visit and adore the Blessed Sacrament. c.) When one enters the Church, he or she faces the tabernacle, and genuflects. Why such great reverence? Because the Eucharist is Our Lord! Thus, the Eucharist is the source and summit of Christian life, nourishing and sustaining believers on their journey of faith.

WOW! Thank you, Keith! I have known this for a long time now, but you state it all so clearly. By the way, when I first "converted" to the Catholic Church I was baptized in an extremely liberal church, (1991 - 1993) Saint Francis of Assisi in Portland, Oregon. I ended up leaving Catholicism for a number of years, but I married a Catholic woman and she (Eileen) brought me to a conservative Catholic Church, The Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Portland, that had a daily Latin Mass, and I re-converted more seriously. My primary shock, regarding Protestants (my brother and sister, included) was how they so readily, unconsciously, and reflexively dismissed the special sanctity and worthy of honor and reverence Our Lady, the Virgin Mary. They all seem to revere Paul especially, but almost offhandedly minimize Mary's supreme role in the Incarnation of God on Earth. Seems bizarre to me.

@@timothyj5237to parse out what you claim, all Catholics are condemned because they place their faith in a man and not in Christ.
It sounds as if you are the one making this judgment. Who has the authority to judge the heart of any man? Perhaps you feel in your self righteousness that you have this authority to decide who goes to hell. In doing so, you place yourself in the position of God. Now is that not placing one’s faith in a man?
Catholics don’t place their trust in Christ because they accept the headship of a pope, is also a part of that claim.
There is headship in our homes, namely, the man as the head of the household. His wife is to submit to his authority. The home is the domestic church where the children will first learn the ways of God and how to live according to His precepts.
God is all about order and structure, just look at creation. Why then would one suppose that God would abandon an ordered structure for His church? If God gives the Pope headship, it doesn’t take away from our trust in God. It actually enhances it. It takes a lot of faith to trust God to preserve His Church, through sacred tradition. We trust that God provided us the scriptures by the work of the Holy Spirit through the same Church whose members persevered in preserving it with their very lives. Some spending their lives hand copying the scriptures to reproduce them. You trust God to have worked through the Church to provide the scriptures by the power of the Holy Spirit. But you don’t trust that God preserved the Church. Yet you claim we don’t put our faith in Christ.
Perhaps you could consider your charge more carefully. The measure in which you measure shall be measured unto you. Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of thy faithful and kindle in them the fire of thy love.

That was until like you said “study the early Church”, I could no longer deny the trail leading me to the one true Apostolic Catholic Church. I believe Protestantism runs quite heavy in the west bc it’s a lot easier to digest for a liberal society, that consume media and motivational speaking as the Truth. To be a Christian is to be obligated to searching for the Truth (Jesus Christ). I am so happy our Great God lead me to Pints with Aquinas. *Hey Keith :)*
Here's what you say to those who claim John 6 is "metaphorical".
If you look at the *Greek* whenever He talked about them "eating" His flesh, His choice of verbs became more and more "visual". "Phago" literally means "to eat" or "physically consume". The disciples take issue with Jesus' literal usage of "eat." So what does Jesus do? *In 54-58,* He uses an even more literal verb, translated as "trogo," which means to gnaw or chew or crunch.
Someone who speaks metaphorically doesn't use words like this. No, He truly was speaking literally, and was making it very clear to His disciples. And this is exactly why they left : They just couldn't believe it, just like the protestants do today.

Did Jesus take His own flesh and blood and give it to the apostles? Since He was present with them, such a thing is not plausible. His very presence makes it both improbable and impossible. So, the elements (the bread and fruit of the vine) of the memorial supper are the same now as they were then.
Sounds more like a Cain sacrifice/ritual than just simple believing in the lamb that was slain for us.

@@jaypritchard7122 Given that those who were there with Jesus, which was certainly not yourself, understood it to be his flesh and blood, might suggest you are mistaken. There are few things in scripture less ambiguous than the Eucharist, and Jesus' creation of that sacrament. It is certainly amusing observing the scriptural gymnastics some perform to refute its truth. Gymnastics born out of necessity because, let's face it, the majority of denominations that exist today began solely to contradict and destroy the Catholic Church. Such could never be accomplished by sharing the Catholic Church's teachings.
The very fact that you would apply your own plausibility test to God himself, may cause you to exercise some intellectual caution. None of the works that Jesus performed on earth were plausible then, just as they are not plausible now. That's sort of the point. If you're offering your take from a scientific viewpoint, then that its own discussion. If you're offering your take as a Christian, you might not want to consider the issue settled. There are certainly some things you're ignoring, purposefully, or out of ignorance. At a minimum, as this video teaches us, you are simply providing your own interpretation of Jesus' words as a replacement for the beliefs of those who actually walked this earth with Jesus. Eating His flesh and drinking His blood to be raised up on the Last Day cannot be symbolic, for this is essential to the core. Symbolic words would not have caused His disciples to turn and walk away or be a "hard saying" for the 12 to understand and accept.
Jesus calls the bread the manna that came down from heaven so it should taste like bread and the blood of God should taste as sweet as wine. Do people have a hard time accepting the Transubstantiation of water to wine? Yes, because the words Jesus spoke sounded a lot like cannibalism to those hearing them. That is why they "walked away" or it was hard to accept. But if one does not eat and drink as the Lord told us to then they have no life within them. They are dead to Him. Similar to the man who wanted to bury his dad then follow Jesus. He was told to "let the dead bury the dead"

The Catholic Church is 'Christ Focused' ...each Mass loves and adores our Lord Jesus Christ. We stand up; give witness; receive the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ - 100% for Real. God created the universe - its pretty small potatoes for the The Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. We hear the Word of God - four Bible readings : normally one Old Testament; a Psalm, then a reading form the New Testament - and finally a reading form a Gospel and song. Oh, this reminds me of the very early church... ie the ones who knew the apostles and Jesus.

    Paul Confirms This
Paul wrote to the Corinthians: “The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?” (1 Cor. 10:16). So when we receive Communion, we actually participate in the body and blood of Christ, not just eat symbols of them. Paul also said, “Therefore whoever eats the bread and drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will have to answer for the body and blood of the Lord. . . . For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself” (1 Cor. 11:27, 29). “To answer for the body and blood” of someone meant to be guilty of a crime as serious as homicide. How could eating mere bread and wine “unworthily” be so serious? Paul’s comment makes sense only if the bread and wine became the real body and blood of Christ.
What Did the First Christians Say?
Anti-Catholics also claim the early Church took this chapter symbolically. Is that so? Let’s see what some early Christians thought, keeping in mind that we can learn much about how Scripture should be interpreted by examining the writings of early Christians.
Ignatius of Antioch, who had been a disciple of the apostle John and who wrote a letter to the Smyrnaeans about A.D. 110, said, referring to “those who hold heterodox opinions,” that “they abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer, because they do not confess that the Eucharist is the flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ, flesh which suffered for our sins and which the Father, in his goodness, raised up again” (6:2, 7:1).
Forty years later, Justin Martyr, wrote, “Not as common bread or common drink do we receive these; but since Jesus Christ our Savior was made incarnate by the word of God and had both flesh and blood for our salvation, so too, as we have been taught, the food which has been made into the Eucharist by the Eucharistic prayer set down by him, and by the change of which our blood and flesh is nourished, . . . is both the flesh and the blood of that incarnated Jesus” (First Apology 66:1-20).
Origen, in a homily written about A.D. 244, attested to belief in the Real Presence. “You are accustomed to take part in the divine mysteries, so you know how, when you have received the Body of the Lord, you reverently exercise every care lest a particle of it fall and lest anything of the consecrated gift perish” (Homilies on Exodus 13:3).
Cyril of Jerusalem, in a catechetical lecture presented in the mid-300s, said, “Do not, therefore, regard the bread and wine as simply that, for they are, according to the Master’s declaration, the body and blood of Christ. Even though the senses suggest to you the other, let faith make you firm” (Catechetical Discourses: Mystagogic 4:22:9).
🤢🤢🤢🤢In a fifth-century homily, Theodore of Mopsuestia seemed to be speaking to today’s Evangelicals and Fundamentalists: “When [Christ] gave the bread he did not say, ‘This is the symbol of my body,’ but, ‘This is my body.’ In the same way, when he gave the cup of his blood he did not say, ‘This is the symbol of my blood,’ but, ‘This is my blood,’ for he wanted us to look upon the [Eucharistic elements], after their reception of grace and the coming of the Holy Spirit, not according to their nature, but to receive them as they are, the body and blood of our Lord” (Catechetical Homilies 5:1).
    Unanimous Testimony
Whatever else might be said, the early Church took John 6 literally. In fact, there is no record from the early centuries in which the literal interpretation is opposed and only the metaphorical accepted.

    Good exposition, Keith.
    Why have Protestants rejected it?
Response: Because they do not believe in and do not possess the sacrament of orders (bishop, priest and deacon) that is common to the hierarchical structure of the four ancient churches which claim apostolic succession, i.e., the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox and Assyrian Church of the East. However, there are some Anglicans and Lutherans who do approximate the ancient understanding of the church's hierarchical structure, but there is no unified belief within their ranks.
St. Ignatius of Antioch, Letter to the Smyrnaeans, Chapter Eight (c. 110 AD):
"See that you all follow the bishop, even as Jesus Christ does the Father, and the presbytery as you would the apostles; and reverence the deacons, as being the institution of God. Let no man do anything connected with the Church without the bishop. Let that be deemed a proper Eucharist, which is administered either by the bishop, or by one to whom he has entrusted it. Wherever the bishop shall appear, there let the multitude of the people also be; even as wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church."

Lack of faith. They don’t see how this is possible. I tell them it’s the exact same faith that tells you Jesus was resurrected from the dead and also ascended to heaven.
It’s the same lack of belief that many do not have faith in baptismal regeneration. Accepting Protestantism is easier than accepting Catholicism because there are far fewer claims. I am not saying everyone who is a Protestant has shallow faith, what I mean is what they are expected to believe and have faith in when it comes to doctrine. Also people naturally want to defend their own camp and never real question their worldview. That takes times there’s no good argument that just turns someone so to speak.

Christ was carried in his own hands when, referring to his own body, he said, “This is my body” [Mt 26:26]. For he carried that body in his hands [Explanations of the Psalms 33:1 (c. A.D. 405)].
I promised you [new Christians], who have now been baptized, a sermon in which I would explain the sacrament of the Lord’s table. . . . The bread you see on the altar, having been sanctified by the word of God, is the body of Christ. The chalice, or rather, what is in the chalice, having been sanctified by the word of God, is the blood of Christ [Sermons 227 (c. A.D. 411)].
What you see is the bread and the chalice; that is what your own eyes report to you. But your faith obliges you to accept that the bread is the body of Christ and the chalice is the blood of Christ. This has been said very briefly, which may perhaps be sufficient for faith; yet faith does not desire instruction [ibid., 272].
