    Historians guess that concealed shoes in a wall originally served as magical charms to ward off witches, demons and ghosts.

    Just a suggestion that would save you days worth of time. Lay down tarps as you tear out walls. Easy carry out and you clear as you destroy. Rather than destroy day then spend days trying to shovel out the pieces.

      I’m still wondering why would you tear down perfectly good plaster and lathe , just to put up sheet rock

    • @scottsatterthwaite4073
      @scottsatterthwaite4073 8 місяців тому +26

      @@Onteo1 As that plaster ages, the "lock" which is the plaster that squeezed through the gaps in the lathe, breaks off and leaves the plaster floating on the lathe. Its going to come down. And it is very expensive to replace (4-5 times the labor cost of drywall). And, there are very few people left that actually know how to lay on plaster.

    • @Onteo1
      @Onteo1 8 місяців тому +2

      @@scottsatterthwaite4073 yes this is true, but watching them remove it the plaster looked remarkably intact for the condition of the cabin.

      @scottsatterthwaite4073 8 місяців тому +28

      @@Onteo1 It would surprise you. Think of all the hot-cold cycles it's been through for decades. Besides, getting down to the bare studs has a couple of advantages: it takes TONS of weight off the structure and it gives you a chance to find and fix structural issues without worrying about destroying fragile plaster walls. It also provides a clean slate for all new plumbing, electrical, and HVAC.

    The shoes in the wall are usually children’s shoes. In Europe you find them high up in the roof or eaves. It goes even further back than that. Often folk will find a cat skeleton under the main hearth or in the wall or roof. It was put there as a form of pre Christian protection for the house. Before THAT a “small” human sacrifice was placed there instead. I think I prefer the shoes as symbols. When we build our house I placed four new gold coloured dollar coins in a pair of baby shoes under the front door step before it was concreted. Old Scottish Habits die hard eh? And I’m too fond of my children….😮😊

    This little cabin somewhat reminds me of the house I grew up in. It was a 1910 house, but it is a split level, and after many years of moving around and going our own ways, my mom moved in with a sister and my other sister moved into that house after Dad died. It was built for a man in a wheelchair. Everything is low - the counters, the cabinets, the light switches. My dad did some updates and stuff over the 30 years they lived there, but it was still, the ceilings were only 6'6", so still for a shorter person. I always joked with him, that that's why I'm so short. Like a goldfish, I was raised in a tiny house and grew up tiny 😂 my brother, who grew up elsewhere before I was born, is 6 ft. tall 😂 anyway, I like the charm of this little house ❤

    If you want to zero in on when the house was last inhabited and it has an address, you can go to the local library and check the city/county directories. I have traced the history of several old houses in that way. You can also check the county deed records for a history of when the property changed hands over the years. Censuses are on line for free up until 1950, so if you find names of occupants, you may be able to find them in the censuses and maybe even be able to contact some of their descendants if you want to compile some history on the house. Real estate tax records may also be a possibility. The city/county historical society may also be able to help.

    The broken metal pieces that had the forked appearance, could be the caste iron grated face of a Heater, or piece that sat in the fireplace to hold wood. Great channel!

    Really good to watch and follow your progress! Im pretty sure that it was occupied a lot later than the 1920/30's though looking at the modern light fittings and switches?

    Try to find where the close line was , sometimes people would leave change in there pockets, and when the pants were put on the line to dry the change would fall out.

    Try toothpaste and some type of metal good cleaning solution solvent to soak them in., an to scrub them off with and rinse really good to dry. To take to A jeweler to have tested for what type of metal those actually are for sure to.

    I enjoy watching the progress of this cabin restoration. I hope you are able to retain the log rafters on the porch roof, so cool! I also hope you keep the piano! It’s been part of the cabin for this long! BTW, does the piano have a decal that says what brand it is? Love all the little discoveries! Very interesting!

    Why don’t you have the whole house completely torn down and rebuild a new cabin? Being very serious: Structurally it will be safer and you still own the property.

    Cool Beans on the artifacts found metal detecting. Most definitely save all the bits and bobs so they can be placed on display in the cabin. I would, if at all possible and practical, try to save the flooring in the room with the rotten subfloor. Can’t wait to see what you do in the next stage with the cabin.

    The next time you are demolishing plaster like on the first floor ceiling use a long 2x4 and it will be faster and easier. The little nails that hold the laft you can go over the wood a thousand times and you will still not get them all. God bless you and your family my friend
