      Hugs, Auntie! Good on you for taking your grandbaby out and teaching them. The struggle is real when you're worried about their future and hoping that you're doing the right thing. I'm glad I brought a smile to your face. 🥰❤️

    We definitely changed things this year also. I was trying to do more group subject with my two and realized my 1st grader hated it. Sticking to the basics with her, THTB math and LA (old version I got on sale two years ago, so no screens lol) and Draw Write Now for a sprinkling of science and history (and copy work as well as drawing) which she loves. My 3rd grader is autodidactic but loves having me with him as a nervous system support while he does his work. He devours information, while my 1st grader just needs a sprinkling. I am finally happy with the flow of school and it takes less time for sure!! We work all the way up to Christmas, and will take that week off, then pick up again after New Years.
    Nice work on finding the flow for your year! And yay for play based learning for littles, I agree!

      Man, I wish I had downloaded all of the old TGTB. I'm really missing it now! The new stuff is still good, but I did like not having to deal with the apps.
      Love Draw Write Now! It's such a great tool! And I'm going to be honest, I had to look up what autodidactic is! Haha! So are they are gifted learner?

      @@SummerMeyers I know! I was glad I got all I did at the time, my youngest will have TGTB through level 2 in the old books lol
      Yes, I guess gifted would be a term used for him…although it’s complicated of course lol. He has autism, hyperlexia and a nervous system disability but he is so sociable that it’s definitely an invisible disability. So, he could be considered gifted and teaches himself whatever he’s interested in…but we struggle a lot with emotions/regulation nervous system stress accumulation etc. Luckily he’s only 9 and we can work together! Some days I’m amazed at his memory and vocabulary, only to be humbled by his sweet young heart in the next moment. Homeschool for the win!!

    Man, I just wish we could get together and chat! I always have so many things I'd want to talk about!
    I am so glad that you found a rhythm that is working well right now! And a 4 year old who wants to read is definitely different than hoping lots of prek workbooks will boost kids for the rest of their lives. You got this!

      🥰 Thank you! You make an excellent point about pre-k workbooks! A lot of fear driven practice, with parents worried about getting their kid into college or worried that their kid won't read if they don't do x, y and z.

    👏 Great job momma! You are doing amazing at listening to your kids' unspoken needs and following those.😊 Switching up school time can be rough (we went the opposite direction you did this fall), but finding the best time can be game changing for homeschool! I can remember getting done with school in an hour mid-morning as a 3rd grader because my mom let me be independent with start time and progress speed.😊 My dad couldn't believe how fast my siblings and I got done on the days he was in charge.
    I also love that you're meeting your 4 year old where he is at in his needs. Even learning to read can be play based, so it can be fun for a preschooler if done appropriately.😊

      It really can! That's so nice you have a homeschool background already so you kind of know how this whole thing works. I'm checking out your channel! 😉

    I completely agree about using as little technology as possible. 😊❤ I used to teach Kindergarten. At first teachers would complain about all the technology kids had at home, and then suddenly it was also in every subject for school. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Double standard. 🤦🏻‍♀️

      Honestly! My sister was just talking about her kids bringing home devices to do their "homework" and then after they are done, they just fool around on the device instead of going outside. She was pretty depressed about it, because there doesn't seem to be a lot of options for her kids to get their work done. Her oldest is in 2nd grade! It's wild!

    There is a part of the HS community that doesn't use planners or schedules (Type B personality). They have a list of assignments to get done every week. Pros: flexibility for Mom with little ones, field trips or outings, and older children are given responsibility. Maybe this can lead to too much freedom or laxness. But it works with checks and balances.

    • @SummerMeyers

      I love that you mention this. I'm definitely more a Type A planning it all out, but I know plenty of homeschoolers who do exactly how you described it. I think this works particularly well for kids in letting them have more ownership of their school work. Are you more type B?

      @@SummerMeyers First, I have to say thank you so much for replying. I appreciate the time you put into making these videos. I am naturally Type B, though I've had my moments of over planning and wanting to follow a public school model. Thankfully, I'm in the early years (firstborn is 4 yo), and I've caught myself just in time to take it slow and steady.
      My priest's wife is my personal contact to the TB HSers. She is an inspiration (in marriage and faith), showing the humble truth that one can still have great hospitality with mess and loud boys playing in the background. She recommended 100 ez lessons. Your feedback on that pgm was topnotch.

    I have absolutely the same thoughts about devices! Love TGTB, but only listen to the narrations when it comes to the app.

    • @SummerMeyers
      @SummerMeyers  Рік тому

      Right?? It felt out of character for TGTB when I found out that I had to download two apps just to use the lesson book. Love that they are free, but man, can't we just go back to paper and pencil? Haha!

    • @SummerMeyers
      @SummerMeyers  Рік тому +1

      Honestly. Or destroy eyesight and tracking movement which is really important for reading... I don't know, I might be on the deep end with this, but I feel uncomfortable with the push for devices in an educational space.
