I am so grateful that I found you! I have been thru something similar with chemicals and bipolar disorder, SUD, etc. I felt "handicapped" because the labels that were put on me and that I adopted myself. I am taking a class at NKU that introduced us to you, and I looked this video up on my own. I can't wait to see more about your work and life! I am finding myself (this past few years) and I feel like I have progressed this past 3 years more than I ever did in the first 32 :) So glad others are finding a way to find meaning and a new life with mental health issues. Thank you so much!
Thank you Dr Deegan, your story resonated with me and in some ways my story is similar. I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and was told by psychiatrist that my goal of helping people could be dillusional. I studied to be a social worker and am presently working in a psychiatric unit. My diagnosis is now Bipolar 1.I would like to help people in a different way such as focusing more on personal medicine (what a wonderful word you created). I posted my first UA-cam video today in the hope of helping people It explains my meaning and purpose. It was an absolute pleasure listening to you, and I'll definitely be watching your video again.
Working as a mental health rehabilitation specialist, I see this "coke and smoke syndrome" daily. I strive to help my clients rise above. Thank you for your testimony and hard work, Dr. Deegan.
I feel Dr Pat put a Label on me! Just kidding... but I'm Schizophrenic and in my hopeless days I drank up to 30 cans of diet coke a day plus 15 plus coffees etc etc smoked 40 cigarettes a day I'm not joking... I'm going to call it my "coke and smoke days" Really the most sense I've heard in a while if not ever on the topic... I even had dreams as grand but of "spreading the word" with music and acting (and I'm not even dellusional mostly)... not there yet ha... I started some Vlogs recently on mental health "working with Schizophrenia" and the likes... I am going to work on the fact I am me and not the disease I'll even bring up that fact in a video soon... So much I could relate to in those "Lost Days" thanks so much Dr Pat
14/1/23 I have just recently come to hear about you, as I am a mentally ill person that has tried to be an advocate of Mental Health and make a difference and failed miserably. This has only added to my despair and hopelessness. This is how your name was mentioned to me. I found your story to be inspirational and exactly what I had hoped to be able to do one day. I have been so mistreated as a mentally ill person that my passion has become to make positive changes to address the stigma and mistreatment of people that have done nothing wrong but become unwell. Yet, I have been treated as sub human or like I’m not a human being with feelings at all. Anyway, you are amazing, and I can only hope to achieve a fraction of what you have. There is so much that needs to change regarding this industry and it is people like you , out there making a difference that had me feel a spark for the first time. Goodluck, when you are done over there, please come to Australia and start a movement over here. 🙏🏻 Love your work. April 💜
Are you going to make a video as well about the awful withdrawal symptoms you can get when you taper down from an antidepressant or antipsychotic? Unfortunately that is a topic that most doctors don't wanna talk about or even deny it.
One of the most useful talk. Speaking through her life as the role model is so impactful. Can't help remembering Victor Frankle who made the world realise the importance of meaning in one's life.
Posting a video on GASLIGHTING in addition to, being FORCED to live with others who are mentally ill may be more suitable for my personal situation, and perhaps others too !

I don’t think this woman realizes the great and awesome impact of her words and work

@@alegriart I assure you, if they didn't have other things to do they probably would be smoking cigarettes and drinking soda. It's sad.

Inspiring story that everyone can learn a different lesson from it

Such a beautiful story. I wonder if she's on medication or was able to get off of it. Either way she is making an impact and enjoying life.
Is there a transcript of this talk?? I'd love to have it.
Hi, sorry no transcript just the video.
