    Years ago I spent maybe $10 to buy nylon washers and paracord, fashioned them into a rectangle the same size as my tent footprint and I use that to set up the fly first if it’s raining.

    For the sippy straw setup, don't plunge the straw all the way to the bottom of your bottle. I insert it about 2/3rds of the way down and so I know when I suck air, I'm low. I marked the straw with a sharpie/or tape.
    By far the smart water sippy straw setup is my favorite.

    Not new tech, but new for me is a small solar panel. I never considered using one and always used a 10- or 20-k mAh bank -- until I had a recent hike with a long distance between "power stops". A solar panel seemed my only option. Went with a 3 oz 10W (more line 5W) and a 3 oz 5-k mAh bank. It ended up working surprisingly well - even with two straight days of constant drizzle and no sun. It kept my A6400, InReach, watch and headlamp fully charged -- and I ended the trip with a nearly fully charged battery bank. I now consider this my standard power source - and it saved about 6 oz over my previous electronics setup. I still plan to carry a wall charger on future trips for faster charging during resupplies - but I need more experience with the setup to evaluate if it is really needed.
    I also concur about electrolytes - a great addition (but I use a different brand). I carry 20z on my shoulder strap and roughly alternate between that and my sip tube-to-smart-waterbottle while hiking on trail. I do feel better later in the day and I think it helps me drink more water overall.

    Most Scandinavian and many German tents have fly and inner attached, and you can also pitch the outer tent independently. Usually they are not ultralight.

      Most of my tents have that function. One eureka from the early 2000s, several chinesium clones (nature hike, 3f ul gear, flame’s creed), some decathlon heavies, hell, even my family size pumpable Karsten is single wall super thick cotton and isn’t inner-first.

    Hilltop Fanny Pack carried up front for substantial carrying of snacks, etc. Converts to a town bag easily with the extra included strap. A game changer for easy access to items on the trail as you look straight down to see what you want. Plus no zipper to fuss with and many packs have rather small side pouches on the hip belt or they are really expensive add on's considering the small capacity. The roll top closure means the bag is very weather proof compared to a zipper but would still put a camera/electronics in a ziplock if in substantial rain. I find having one more buckle to deal with when getting into or out of the pack doesn't slow anything down in the scheme of things., especially if time is saved on the trail not having to hunt elsewhere on the pack for stuff.

    • @higler.
      @higler. 9 місяців тому +2

      The fanny pack is a good idea but I think just buying a pack with a running style harness would be better. Why any pack is made without pockets on the front straps is so crazy to me, but until they catch up the fanny pack is a good solution.

      I like the hilltop Fanny pack, If I am grabbing snacks while I am walking, I can clip the snap on top so nothing falls out while walking and eating. Plus it can become bigger or smaller depending on what you are carrying.

    Dutchware gear up chair quilt for winter. It doubles as a comfortable pillow and keeps my back warm using the chair zero. Adds virtually no additional weight because it replaces my pillow I was going to take anyways but it also doubles as a chair quilt insulation.

    The valve on sea to summit mats can also be flipped. When you are deflating the pad you can open both, dump a bunch of air, then rotate the in valve so it is now an out valve. That way as you roll it up you don't need to stop air coming back in

  • @dangerpudge1922
    @dangerpudge1922 9 місяців тому +1

    Pad valves: I don't quite get this one. I vastly prefer to have two separate valves so you don't accidentally dump the air when trying to just make a small adjustment, however at least with the EXPED you simply sleep with the valves at your feet if needed, and if you're worried about kicking them open (doubtful) you just flip the pad over; there's no top or bottom or front or back with the EXPED (and similarly designed ones). When you get onto the pad for the first time, do so with your head at the foot and you'll be able to tell just fine whether or not your pressure is correct.

    5:23 I just bought a Gregory Baltoro 65 having a dedicated side pocket for a water bottle, on the frame near the hip belt, more over with a perfect angle: after comparing with many other backpacks, it's the best solution for water bottles (it also has an inner pocket for a 3L water bag+straw). It can also serve as a pocket for fast and comfortable access to some camera lens, along a good protection - with its frontal U-Ziper and super comfy harness, that backpack is perfect for carrying an insert with heavy photograph gear. Awesome. On my last pic-nic, I used that pocket for carrying a bottle of wine.

    The REI Flash 45 and 55L packs both have easy to reach water bottle pockets. Last time I checked the 45L was not available. That's sad because it's the perfect weekend pack. I'm switching from Smartwater bottles to 1L bags and tube/bite valve setup. Got 2 bags with a Sawyer Squeeze filter. They will fit in the Flash pockets. I can easily check how much water remains. Thanks for another helpful video.

    There are only three things I don't like about my Zpacks Duplex tent. 1. the way the rainbow door can flop outside into the mud - which is a problem when Mr. Dog is eager to get out of the rain. 2. the curved zipper that never does not bind at the top and leaves a opening. 3. the zipper almost always requires two hands to operate. One to hold the the mesh taught, and the other to operate the zipper. I also have a Lanshan 2 (mostly my winter tent now) and it is so much easier to operate the zippers in both the three and four season inners.

    The Durston XMid can also be pitched fly first, and taken down fly last if it's raining. The inner clips up to the peak with Fastex buckles. This tent has been a game changer over my single wall tent. It's a bit heavier than the single wall but still very light, with the ability to shake condensation or rain off the fly and pack it on the outside of your pack if it's still damp.

    The worst water bottle pockets I ever had were the all stretch mesh type. I was always fighting to get the bottles back in, and when the bottles were empty, the mesh would literally squeeze them out of the pocket! The best water bottle pockets I’ve ever had are on my Waymark EMBR. They are deep, gusseted Ecopak with and elastic top. We've been buying tents with the inner fixed to the outer for many years here in the UK. I've never understood why manufacturers make tents that need the inner pitched first? 🤷‍♂️ Silly idea...

    • @SigfridSWE
      @SigfridSWE 9 місяців тому +1

      I didn't understand either until I hiked the PCT this year. Those tents have a lot of space and in the desert for example Carlifornia and other hot weather parts those tents are amazing and the flaw of not being able to put up it up in one peice does not matter 99% of the time.
      As a guy from sweden I had a similar view before. But not every place on earth are our rainy country's.
      The design is awesome in other ways and that sea to summit tent fixes a lot of the problems with the design. So its on my list as my next tent to bye (I have 3 hillebergs and a Durston X-Mid PRO 2p)

    • @frstesiste7670
      @frstesiste7670 9 місяців тому

      Also from Europe and I've done the PCT and quite a few other hikes in the US. The weather in large parts of North America is just so much "nicer" that I understand why inner first tents are popular. I even bought one myself, but I'd never use it in Scandinavia or the UK. The opposite is also true to some extent. Used a typical Scandinavian design tent on part of my first thruhike. It was designed (like most are) for windy conditions and ventilation was just not good enough for fairly warm nights with little or no wind on the AT.

    I think it’s fair to point out that Dan Durston’s tents aren’t ‘just’ a one pitch solution. The outer can be deployed separately, I.e. the inner can be unclipped, so yes, the whole tent can be pitched in one move, or you can put up the outer, then get inside and clip in the inner. It’s a major point, cos if it’s lashing down when you pack up, you can unclip the inner, pack all your kit up and then drop the outer in about 20 seconds, leaving everything dry bar the fly, and then just stash the fly in a side pocket
    Edit: just read the comments and seen everyone else’s comments - note to self : don’t be too quick to be a smart ass!

      I've used that backpack all this year for day hikes and backpacking trips up to one week long and I haven't had any problems with durability. It's great to have a separate water bottle pocket so I can use the side pockets for other things.

      Been using this pack for four years now and no problems with the water bottle pockets ripping. I can't rave about this feature enough, it's the best!
