Home brewing: Should you use yeast nutrient?

  • When brewing your beer, does it make sense to use a yeast nutrient addition to aid in the fermentation? Well I started doing this and the results have been surprising. I share my thoughts on the Wyeast Yeast Nutrient (no affiliation at all, just talking about a product from a company I trust and use). The nutrient is inexpensive $3.50 - $4.00 and will support many, many batches. It is easy to use. And the results: very impressed and happy. It has become part of my regular process. I encourage you to give it a try.

I just tried yeast nutrients for the first time in the form of Fermaid O. I was honestly amazed at how powerful it made the yeast to begin with and how powerfully it is still working and I think that it will make the fermentation shorter. I just found your channel so thank you for covering the subject. If I think of other subjects that are worth covering I will let you know.

Thanks for watching and your comment. I am using the yeast nutrient all of the time now. I figure by adding it, and using O2 in the wort when I pitch the yeast, I am doing all I can to help the fermentation ( and I really think that it does). By all means, any subject of interest would be well received. Sometimes the hardest thing is to come up with interesting things to cover in the videos. Thanks again. -DT

Good idea. I've used both yeast energizer and yeast nutrient before for various reasons (mostly for meads though to be honest). It has been recommended to me before to use yeast energizer for "big beers" and I've found it to be helpful, particularly when preparing a yeast starter and first pitching the yeast into the high OG wort. I usually will also add a smidge when conducting a secondary ferment for these larger beers--though in total I never exceed the recommended 1/2 tsp per gallon recommended by the manufacturer of the energizer.
I think the key is looking into the ingredients for both before adding, to understand the impact on the beer. The main reason I don't add yeast nutrient to beer--aside from the fact that most worts will have plenty of nutrients already anyways--is that many yeast nutrients include diammonium phosphate (DAP), which is slightly alkaline in water. Since I already have a relatively high pH with my water, I tend to avoid adding this. Not all yeast nutrients include DAP, hence why reading the ingredients is helpful.
Since I've started oxygenating my beers and adding small amounts of energizer to the wort, I've never had a problem hitting my FG--for what that's worth. Occasionally before, I would finish a bit higher than my target FG.

Thanks for watching and your detailed comment. This is why I started the channel, to share ideas and discuss topics often not covered. I try to share what I have learned, and at the same time learn so much from those who watch and comment (I just learned quite a bit from you, thank you!). All the best. -DT

Lemon juice, Tea, or chopped raisins are supposed to be good.

Do you throw in the nutrient directly or do you dissolve in some water first?

hello, thanks for watching and your comment. The instructions say "add 2.2 grams per 5 gallon batch, add during the last 15 minutes of the boil". I simply weigh it out, and dump the dry powder into the boiling wort. Not too sure how impactful it is, but by paying close attention to my yeast health and pitch rate, proper oxygenation, using yeast nutrient, my fermentations are much more active and immediate than ever before. It is cheap, supplied by one of the leading yeast suppliers (WyEast) so I figure "why not"? Thanks again for watching, all the best. -DT

thanks for the nice note (I hadn't seen it until now). If you have any ideas or topics you'd like to have covered, just let me know. The hardest thing is sometimes just coming up with interesting topics (that haven't been done over and over by others)! Thanks again for watching and for your nice comment.
