They should have just adapted the Last Wish book. Scrap the unnecessary Yennefer backstory. Don't make the timeline impossible to understand. There was no need to condense 2 books into one season given the high demand for Witcher content.

Want to know a joke? The show is 8 hours long and the entire Last Wish Audio book is only two hours longer... and now imagine how much faster you can show a story than someone reading it to you... that gives you an idea of how big of a screwup this show is.

I'm interested to know why you called the law of surprise, "stupid".
I know the show has used the idea of destiny to skip meaningful writing (which is unacceptable), however, if the idea is unique to this world, and sticks this reasonable definitions, i don't see a problem (that's part of writing stories).
Your critique is acceptable but it seems like a 1st draft because you make a good number of referencing errors.
And you also seem to not know much about the characters. For example, being a mother doesn't mean your compassionate and generous to everyone. Just your family (e.g. Cersei).

I actually really hate how they portrayed Geralt and Jaskier's relationship. I loved their friendship in the books, how close they were. Like c'mon, in "Last wish" Geralt says (in an english translation that I found) : "I'd sit on a scorpion with my bare backside if I knew it would help him". Plus, when he said it, it was mostly a matter of Jaskier possibly losing his voice, not (like in the show) his life. In netflix's show Geralt is just abusing Jaskier >:( Sorry for the rant, I just really enjoy how Sapkowski wrote their relationship, so it really bugs me that Geralt is being such an asshole here.

Which is why in the book it's dandelion/Jaskier who finds it and totally by accident. And Geralt doesn't even believe in Djinns in that story because they're so incredibly rare and powerful. Yennefer and a Priest need to explain what a Djinn even is and that they come from the elemental planes. It shows that despite Geralt being well trained, he doesn't know everything and sometimes seeks advice from more knowledgable people. Book Geralt even listened to a few lectures at Oxenfurt from what I remember.
Once he realizes what Dandelion is doing, he warns the bard vehemently against getting anywhere near the monster, let alone try and find it himself...

As to the story being fixed with better writing in the future seasons I think it might be near impossible, as they've painted themselves into a corner with the changes to some important characters and worldbuilding. That also implies a complete overhaul in the writing team or atleast the level and tone of the writing to begin with ( and one doesn't just turn into a competent writer overnight but who knows maybe they get three wishes from some Djinn), and it's already announced that they will add two writers to the team without dropping anyone.

Great points all around. Especially when you talked about how hard it is to get a high profile writing job, considering how many good unknown writers there are.
For me, the most intriguing things about the world of the Witcher were that it was grounded and full of subtlety. Lauren misses that completely and so what we got looks, essentially like a wish fulfillment mediocre fanfiction written by a teenage girl.
The show often feels like a soap opera.
Coming back to the previous point. Maybe the industry is just doomed at this point. There's masses of passionate, skilled, talented people who would love to work on this production and seems that none of them were able to access it.
Almost everything feels out of place and how Lauren Hissrich was allowed to write this is completely beyond my simple mind.

This is a great analysis and an accurate summary of the many flaws of the show. Only is the statement that the aspects other than writing are bad. Sure writing is the most important part or why the show doesn't work, but shows can be saved at least to some extent by other aspects being great, like casting, directing, acting, costumes, set design and so on (GoT S4-7 and Mandalorian S1 are good examples of this). Basically all of these are mediocre at best and out right bad at worst. I mean look at the CGI of the ghouls or the dragon. Look at the practical effects of the stryga or the goat man. The costumes are obviously work of someone okish artists who couldn't make it in the modeling industry and so they handfist their ideas into medieval clothing.

Adapting a videogame is not a fair statement despite which was more succesfull. They may have (and they did) picked it based on the popularity of the games, but they aren't adapting a game (despite any inspirations for certain elements) and have no pitfalls associated with adapting games and shared with such adaptations.
Nevermind the finished product makes one question wtf they are actually adapting. 90% of your fair complaints would be erased had they followed the book narrative more. It feels like they didn't want to adapt the first two books and avoided doing so so much. Their inventions and additions are mess and the necessary cuts to allow for them made mess of the source too.

It's complete crap from an objective standpoint as well. Its special effects are incredibly bad, so are costume design and most of the cinematography. There's needless borderline pornographic nudity all over the place where it ads absolutely nothing. Same with blood and gore. It's just there for pure shock effect, it ads nothing whatsoever. Most of the monster fights are absolutely hilariously bad, the monster designs are insanely bad. The strigga was a joke, the golden dragon could be done better by any hobby modeler on a weekend (and happens to be wyvern instead of a dragon but hey, details). Ciri's entire backstory of her relationship to Geralt is broken and replaced by something that makes no sense and is boring as hell. Almost every side character's story and personality is badly written, badly told and often badly performed.
This show is bad on every level, ESPECIALLY considering the budget. It's ludicrous that anybody considers this good. But hey.. flush tits and gore at people every 5 minutes nowadays and they'll consider it great and edgy. I consider that trash.

É tudo a mesma coisa ;)
      As aparências enganam!!!!

I agree with most, disagree with some, but the Games made it famous is an idiotic statement. Does all of eastern europe, russia, parts of central europe mean nothing to you? I know Muricans are like that but this is a very negative stereotype.
Plus, over 60 percent of witcher 1 sales came from countries where the books were popular. Over 50 percent for Witcher 2. The only reason Witcher 3 exists for you people is us readers buying these games when it mattered. I would not have invested in W1 were it not for the original works.

Alexander Yordanov I think there might be a misunderstanding here. I assume we can all agree this show only got made, because of the success of the Witcher 3 wild hunt. Regardless of the books success. Maybe, it wasn’t the only reason, the fact that GOT ended, could be another. What I meant by that statement was that one good thing to come from this show success and popularity , was that networks like Netflix, might delve into more diverse media, such as video games . “Might” is the key word there. That’s was all, it was meant to be a silver lining for the show success. It was not a slight against the books or the books popularity. You’re completely taken it the wrong way. I hope this clarifies. Thanks for watching and commenting

@@CharcharoExplorer I think you are overestimating the popularity of the books before games came out. I'm russian and I've never heard anything about the books before the first game came out nor have anybody in my surroundings. And it's not like we didn't read books. So it's probably fair to say that the games gave a pretty big boost to the books popularity.

@@NecroxProduction 60% of the Witcher 1's sales come from regions where the books were already out. This includes Poland, Bulgaria, Russia, Czech, Spanish, German etc. The only reason the buggy, lets be real, not impressive in 2007 game got a sequel is book nerds or word of mouth.
Witcher 2 had 40% of its sales from the same regions. The Anglosphere Western World still did not amount to much here.
I mean, I understand you didnt hear of the books first, but the only reason I gave CDPR money back then and even got other friends into the series in their darkest hour... was the books.

@@CharcharoExplorer and majority of the witcher games fan base never new about the books before the game. Most played it first then read the books. Especially from the witcher 3. Holywood could clearly see that. Not everyone who reads books would have been interested in video games. The witcher 1 by then was a small franchise, but by the time the second and 3rd one came out, especially the 3rd one, it's popularity rocketed to the moon.

i was fine with the show because i hadn't read the books or played the 2nd and 3rd game rofl. i was also not as mad as many others about the end of game of thrones. because my fav series is yet to be adapted :) the wheel of time. now if that sucks? then il'l probably jump off a cliff xD hopefully it'll be awesome when it comes out next year.

As a person who'd never known of the world of the Witcher - game or books - I watched the show completely naïve of it all ... and LOVED IT!
It made sense to me, it was easy to follow, and it gave me the ability to connect with the characters. Best of all it enticed me to seek out more! More about it, the books, and the game (No haven't played it but found out my son was an avid player and so he showed me it) So ok, I can understand that expectations of pre-show Witcher fans may have been thwarted, it is a pretty good introduction into the world!
However, that opinion may change when I've finished reading the books! 😉

That's great! I'm happy you like it, and that it pulled you into the Witcher world. Hope the books and games are just as fun.
I couldn't get into the Netflix series at all, but I guess it's just not for me.
