I loved the FF14 reference!!! Ahhh what a legendary history that no other series can boast. Ff has some of the best (if not the best) soundtracks of any game regardless of genre, and Thearhythm capitalizes on it fully! Im not a big rhythm game person myself, but your demo review got me hooked immediately!! Thanks for giving this game the attention it deserves
Thank you so much! That's very kind of you, and I'm really super glad that you're enjoying the heck out of it! I'll always go to bat for the games I believe in, even if they're not guaranteed to get views! Thanks for checking the game out again!
I loved the first two games on 3DS and was very skeptical of this game initially because I was so used to the touch controls of the previous games and was worried it wouldn’t translate well to a mere controller. It took maybe an hour to get my brain used to it and now I’ve sunk over 80 hours into it, finally getting all characters up to level 99 and an at about 75% complete on the music quest. Super addictive.
I've been seriously enjoying it between Ishin sessions, definitely a great game and let's just say having tracks from Live A Live, Neo TWEWY, the Mana series, Chrono Trigger and Cross AND Xenogears as DLC sold me personally 😄
how do you get the notes to look like that coming down on the center of the screen at 2:05 in your video I looked in settings on what to change and I could not find it the lanes
I feel the true way to enjoy this to the fullest is to have played previous FF games, as I believe that is the main hook of this game, especially with how you discussed revliving memories through it! But neat it has a coop mode, more games need coop!
Great review, you touched on points positive and negative that other reviews missed. I’ve put in about 40 hrs and that’s just to finish the “Campaign”. This thing is endlessly replayable. Problem is so far this year has been insane for big releases, especially this month. This game is kind of niche, especially if you know nothing of the ds/3ds games. It will get more traction on switch than ps4. It’s an excellent game if you like final fantasy and it’s music. My wife will come by when I’m playing just to hear it.
Great review! Although I wish you mentioned the battle mode with other online players! I thought it was greatly implemented and I had such a great time playing against random people and collect cards!
Thank you so much! I didn’t have much new to say about it that wasn’t going to be similar to what I’ve already said about it’s gameplay, though I did post footage of it in the video!
I'm tempted to try Theatrhythm Final Bar Line even though I'm not normally much of a player of rhythm game. Being a considerable fan of the Final Fantasy series and also seeing that the game has RPG mechanics to it, this one might have some appeal to me. The reason why I typically find rhythm games to be awkward to play is because I play multiple musical instruments and the feeling of playing a rhythm game on a controller is very different to me to that of playing an instrument so it just feels a bit off to me. Though maybe with some more practice something will finally click for me and rhythm games will become more playable for me and Theatrhythm Final Bar Line might be a game that catches my interest enough to keep me trying until I get the feel for it.
I might get this game, I'm not really good at rhythm games though, not a huge fan of FF series either but the music is guite good. They need to localize and port the Dragon Quest version of this game to the Swtich (is currently only on 3DS)
As I mentioned in the review, putting the difficult to easy and maybe using Simple mode will help you learn the timings a bit better! Also, I think the DQ version is locked down by Sugimori’s estate - as in they don’t want that to be released stateside.
I chose this game as a bday gift from my gf because I skipped another RPG because I just got Octopath Traveller 2 at the same time. The game content is huge so it's easy to try this one even though I'm not really an FF fan.
You always have to buy most expensive version of any rhythm game. I even bought the thousands of dollars of fuser dlc, music licensing is expensive and tricky. It’s very possible they NEED to charge extra for songs like those in dx
I personally don't mind buying the extra stuff myself, but I do feel that especially given how Zanarkand was available in the previous title and given the way each album flows, it would've been integral to the beginning of the FFX album. Naturally, the developer disagrees.
The nostalgia of ffx omg. Suteki da ne kills me everytime But I kinda hate the way the rhythm is an addition to the song, which means that some of the beats are a little off
I don't know what is sadder:The fact that not all songs are in the base game meaning you need to buy special editions to get all of them or that none of the Kingdom Hearts songs aren't in that bundle but Nier and TWEWY is lol. Like really guys Nier isn't even a Square Enix franchise it is a Yoko Taro franchise lol. Other then that, it does seem interesting and maybe it could be a Gateway for people who never played rhythm games. Nice review Alex!
@@BacklogBattle You know aside from the other way which is to get the big collection that has every single game in the series plus the movie versions of certain games that didn't get ported lol.
I absolutely biasly loved the games demo, however I can't justify its price Tag. £50 for basic edition is just too much, sure people could argue the amount of songs, but what is there beyond that.
A lot of people would argue for the amount of songs, but that’s missing the other thing that the game does well: take you back in time to relive fond memories of the series. It is true that if one wants to relive those moments, they can just replay the games. But let’s be real here: we’ve all got backlogs and we all play lengthy games, and what is positioned as a possibility isn’t really a realistic reality. So the question then is if that amount is worth the shortcut and the potential to remind ourselves of what we’ve played before, which differs from person to person. Most will answer with a No, and that’s fine. All I’m saying is that games can be more than just a bullet point of technical features, like the number of songs.
@@BacklogBattle I'll will definitely be getting it sometime soon, I'm a huge fan of Nobuo's music, let's face it, it's half the reason why they are so emersive. FF7 was my first typically and I loved that soundtrack. I think FF4, 6, 7, 8 and 10 are my personal favourites, for the music.
It's not really easier or harder than Guitar Hero. Guitar Hero is entirely pass-fail and doesn't judge your notes on gradients of precision. Both can be ridiculously easy or crushingly difficult depending on how you tune the difficulty and accessibility settings. Both are excellent if you like the genre.
I think difficulty is always relative to the skill of the player and their experience in the genre, so I agree on all of the points you brought up. For my part, I just want people to approach Theatrhythm from a different perspective that doesn't lump it alongside other rhythm games before. To me, the nostalgia aspect is key to the enjoyment of Final Bar Line, which is why it was brought up first in the review, with the mechanics brought up later! That said, I'm glad you appreciate it from a mechanical standpoint!
This game is my largest guilty pleasure of 2023. I can’t say enough good things about it. Iam not a fan of rhythm games yet, I have purchased all the DLC and spent 80 hours playing this. If you are even slightly interested give it a try. It’s very addictive.
i really enjoy this one likely ends up being most played game of the year also looking forward to live a live songs 1 march gonna be fun i do really agree with you with dx songs greedy move on square especially seeing it include zanarkand and real emotion will atleast get money out of it myself seeing i cant stop playing
I know this game isn't made for me but I can feel the celebration for FF and it's long storied history! Didn't know about the DLC which is extremely scummy but man over hundreds of songs is so stuffed it's pretty much, EVERYTHING IS HERE kinda moment. Albeit missing a few for a few bucks

Love your take on the narrative of the game. Great analysis, Alex!
Thank you so much! Admittedly, this isn't the first time I've come across this idea 😉

Only certain types of songs do that! I don't quite recall what they're called, but it's a specific type of song.
they are only on the special FMV stages, you unlock them when you complete the last song of a title.

Yes! Highly recommended!

I think since its a rythmn game and more enjoyanle for series fan general public is staying away from is sadly
That’s certainly part of it. I think people typically make up their minds when they hear certain things and just assume it’s not for them.

Kingdom Hearts had their own music game though: Melody of Memory, from the same team, released two years ago!
