Speculative Territory: The nature of Zhongli and Guizhong’s relationship in explaining Zhongli’s 1.1 actions
A new weapon, aptly named Memory of Dust, contains a snippet of Zhongli & Guizhong’s first meeting-- and final parting. In particular, that they met when the Glaze Lilies were in full bloom, and how she was the brains and he was the brawns. Therein lies an implication that amongst the two, Guizhong was the ‘human’ one, the gentle goddess who was empathetic towards the fears of humanity, while Zhongli just stabbed things and summoned meteors. Such a cruel, emotionless god is a jarring image to place onto our beloved dastardly himbo, but other lore tidbits support this:
Venti calls Zhongli a “brutish blundering buffoon” and “old block-head” in his voicelines. But in Chinese, he specifically insults Zhongli with 不懂人心的死脑筋 = “A dead brain who cannot understand human feelings”.
Let’s look back at the Archaic Petra lore too: “It is said that during the years when gods contended against one another, Rex Lapis' aspect was that of boundless slaughter. In those god-eat-god battles, one could never have ascribed gentleness to him... [...] Rex Lapis' stone-cold expression never once changed throughout that storied age. They say that only when the dust settled did he lay down that unmovable visage. But it had been necessary, for he had donned it to fulfill a contract.”
From all this, we can see that Zhongli obviously struggles to understand human emotions. In the past, he led Liyue as a God of War. In current times, such wartime prowess is unneeded, so he is basically left as just the weirdest human ever (as he basically bumbled through Liyue with 0 social awareness or understanding of Mora, despite it, literally, being his namesake-- he has simply been revered for so long he is insanely out of touch with normal day-to-day human actions). But what if Zhongli is aware of this gap? What if he realizes, intimately, that he is incapable of relating to the humans he is meant to lead? What if his inability to ever unlock the Memory of Dust which Guizhong left him, still haunts him?
Many were confused at Zhongli basically just giving his Gnosis up and roleplaying as a human (and potentially sending Teyvat into a ruinous financial crisis in the process as they will now be unable to produce Mora, oops?). From what Zhongli said about ‘finishing his duty’, many assumed he was just tired of being in charge and this is his way of turning in his resignation before an eternity-long retirement.
But in Zhongli’s Chinese voicelines, he makes many nostalgic mentions to an old friend who is heavily implied to be Guizhong. Furthermore, remember that Rex Lapis likes perfume associated with mature women: a reference to Guizhong? Let's not forget how mad he got at the Treasure Hoarders for damaging the ballista. The maintenance notice for the ballista is also... aggressive.
All of this lends credence to how Zhongli still misses her, still lingers on her words, and perhaps, still wants to accomplish her challenge to him: to unlock the Memory of Dust. To understand humanity. Perhaps he lets go of his duties, not just to fuck off and have fun, but because he finally realizes Liyue can stand on its own two feet and now he can pursue a personal goal he has put aside for over two millennia: to be human.
Unfortunately, to that end, he retires by basically sitting aside sipping a pina colada while Liyue nearly gets swallowed by an old sea god, likely giving everyone in Liyue PTSD, but he wouldn’t be Zhongli if he didn’t go out doing something catastrophically out of touch.
I'm not 100% sure but I remember that he also had a brief stint where he attempted to conquer all the nations in the name of bringing order. There are a lot of lore bits in the game that hint at Zhongli lacking quite a bit of chill in the past.

To be able to change a deadly killing machine into a broke and somewhat silly gentleman, guizhong is very powerful indeed

oh, now I kinda understand this line a bit more. He used to drink Osmanthus wine with Guizhong. Everyone always says, 'What about Venti?' but it is likely that Osmanthus wine existed before Venti met Zhongli. idkkk this lore is confusing as frick, even for just a single line

Man, Zhongli and Guizhong meeting in a field of flowers (and parting in the same place) that happens to be Guizhong's favorite just screams historical romance drama. No one will convince me that this ship doesn't at least have a romantic undertone
There was a book that was discontinued that actually went into Zhongli and Ghuizhong's history together and it's painted as romantic.
They had to discontinue it because there was discontent in the CN community about misrepresenting Zhongli as a callous murderer with no regard for the people he rules over as a god.
Apparently those people basically revere Zhongli as you see him in modern day Liyue as a godly emperor and to see someone perfect be morally inept and so heavily flawed upset them.
I think also a fair few shippers hated it.
But it is definitely canon that the two were lovers even if they never do anything romantic in history books, the author designed Ghuizhong to be Zhongli's foil and he has Zhongli say this quote: "It takes dust to soften stone." Referring to the weaker Ghuizhong softening his rock hard heart into the person he is today.

@@reimreim67 I hope that's the case, it makes perfect sense because Ghuizhong was the one who loved humans dearly and guided Zhongli into caring for them too.
For her to be reborn as Ninguang fits perfectly because as a person she's willing to throw her entire life's work away in a heartbeat to protect the people of Liyue from threats.
I do hope that Zhongli's later Story Quest chapters help shed more light on Liyue's ancient, sad past, since I have a feeling it'll tie into the fall of atleast two ancient human civilizations.
Guizhong please come back to us, to Zhongli. I can't take this pain knowing Zhongli longs to see you once more.

Explanation: in my original character stories, a bunch of them had to, or any other reason, slaughter their own families, or watched their friend being ripped apart, disintegrated, etc( there WERE thousands of dead named characters in my stories, now it’s probs in the tens of thousands, not counting unnamed victims of course, otherwise the numbers would have too many zeros )

Unfortunately, I am afraid mihoyo will not give the love story about zhongli and guizhong explicitly. This is common sense for the kind of game with lots of waifu and hasbando like genshin. If a waifu or hasbando character has a lover, those fan girls and fan boys will feel cucked and angry. Mihoyo will definitely try to avoid this given the recent incident of its Honkai 3rd bunny girls.
Yeah, I've seen that happening in FGO with Brynhildr and Sigurd. It's a shame that fans are like that sometimes.
You can see that in what they made to everyone's story, they are talking about their precious friends or family members, but fans' imagination and stuff can go really weird and wild, Like in the ZhounglixChilde ship where they are believing that they are married since Zhoungli gave Childe the Phoenix chopsticks, when this is also ment for relatives and friends to mean " wishing them happiness ". Ngl I like it this way as to portrait real and good friendship and family care to every character

This lullaby... July 23 is the night, the love of my life passed away... it broke my heart really badly and didn't want to live anymore. I was laying on my bed crying and my sister played this song. It made me cry even more but I felt happier knowing he is in a better place. The same night I dreamed of him.
I was in a dark room and called out my mom because I was scared. Then I called out his name. "Carlos?" I saw a bright light falling from above and the while room lit up. It's was all sky and clouds and the ground was water. From the bottom I saw a bright ball coming towards me and as it was getting closer it was him... Carlos. He looked at me and smiled and I smiled back. He told me "I am alright, Dont worry about me, I'm at a better place." He got closer and put his hand on my lower cheek of my face and said "Live your life. Do what you want. Do the good. Before it's too late." and then I woke up. My sister told me in the morning that I kept repeating his name and I was crying so badly she had to remove my airpod so they wouldn't get wet.
It's been 1 week but I've managed. I dont want to go to church. For 2 years I go and I'd expect to see him but now he will never be there where I'll see him. He probably will be theyre spiritually but not physically. I will always miss him and I will always love him till the day I die. 🌹

I have zhongli, i got him from his rerun and am reading his story and listen to his voice lines, his memory is so good, it's so good that even he can remember everything that happened long ago. his good memory is awesome bc he is a god of contract and he remembers all of the contracts that he made until now. but his good memory can also be bad cause he can remember all the unpleasant things too.
Zhongli and Guizhong story remind me of Chinese movies The Myth, also The White snake and the Sorcerer.. Especially the ending soundtracks from each movies, “Endless love”, and “Promise”. Seriously….

Whether or not Zhongli/Guizhong had feelings or each other, but the friendship they had was really beautiful! No matter how u look at them, friendship they had was just so pure, but the world is just so cruel like irl as well. However, it's probably worse for Zhongli who is considered immortal (I said considered coz he might be affected by the erosion as well) & for him time passes like it was just yesterday. When you look into his story everything to him looks like they happened like a few days back or just yesterday. It's just so sad how memory preserves, but not the moment we had with the people. T^T

Zhongli will probably die in the future. Either before the completion of his first contract or to use his death as the end of it. The first contract was between celestia and the archons wherein the details are still unknown.
Yes probably like Honkai impact(Basically there other game which is older) where the story starts not too dark and sad but as it goes on it's gets deeper and depressing.
Mihoyo also loves to ruin people mentally and financially so it's possible even with the amount of death flags on some characters like Xiao and Zhongli.

Lady Guizhong must appear in Zhongli's last story arc. Since his strongest contract is protecting his people.

Until today, since the Memory of Dust Catalyst appear in the gacha.
I still believe that block is Guizhong love to Zhongli.
She knows that even until today in the main story, Zhongli will be cannot opened that block. Since Zhongli is described as Cold hearted god back then, and it showed that He actually doesn't care much about human feelings. And do what to do based on logic only.
He knows how important about relationship, but doesn't know feeling behind it. And doesn't care.
So, to open that block from Guizhong, Zhongli must understand what is "love" is. What is compassions. And what is emphaty.
It called Memory of Dust. I assume the contain is probably anything about that two before she dead but with Guizhong heart and soul in it explaining what she feels about the time she's doing with Zhongli.
But then again, it just my headcanon. So take it with grain of salt.

Dang now that I watch this it kinda sucks interesting characters like these died, Guizhong, Kazuha’s friend, Venti’s friend and Crepus (Diluc’s father) all seem like really nice and interesting characters, hopefully we get more lore about them in the future

Morax is a feared and the most powerful god in teyvat and also know as the God of War or God of Destruction but Guizhong teach him how to love and how to care about those mortals.. when she died in archon war.. Morax swear to continue to protect the people she love until today.. Morax finds Home in her Company.

He will finally open the memory of dust and understand everything, the human's feeling,and especially the memories he has with Guizhong

This melody and seeing Zongli with Guizhong just makes me feel so sad. I can't imagine losing a close one and living a life without them. It is just so sad, I imagine how Zhongli might be getting lonely sometimes and just can't do anything about it even though is an archon and has so much power, feeling helpless and it makes me sad.

why the fuck am I on verge of tears when I hear her voice. I feel like Zhongli might have truly loved her, and I honestly wouldn't be surprised if deep down in some sort of unwritten lore, he deeply regrets her perishing like that. But this sound feels like such yearning, such longing to feel a warm embrace and yet saying that it's going to be okay. The Memory of Dust is the official translation of the weapon 尘世锁. There is a secondary meaning to the name of the weapon. The first two characters 尘世, in Chinese, is the dust realm, otherwise referring to the mortal realm, where things rise and fall, aggregate and erode. The third charcter 锁， is lock or locket. The second whole translation of the weapon would be the locket of the Moral Realm. IMO, to open the lock is to enter erosion, and since Morax recently let go of his Gnosis, he can finally open the lock, and he would eventually reunite with Guizhong in his true passing.

This really tears me up, idk if they were lovers or not but just think about it "when the person whom you are close with,the one who you loved, the one who you shared lots of memories with, the one who changed you one day vanish off what will you do?". I can't never imagine how painful it'd be... I'm sure it feels like your heart ripping apart.

I love the music in genshin so much, I can feel something while listening to them, which i don't normally when i play a game, because i don't really listen to the ost of the games, but genshin really hits different. I look forward to more ost from mihoyo and good luck everyone on the gacha ♥
