Banana Planting Methods | କଦଳୀ କିସମ ଓ ଲଗାଇବା ପଦ୍ଧତି

Mr. Santosh Kumar Mohanty of Nayagarh is cultivating with tissue culture banana varieties of G9 / Grand Nain (Cavendish banana), patakpura, amruthapani, Champa kathi and plantain varieties of gaja, paunsia, batista and Mendhi. Batista is bearing around 120 to 150 bananas in each plant and withstanding cyclonic wind speed up to 80- 90 kilometers per hour.
He is reducing input cost by adopting innovative techniques. He is not planting banana every year, rather he has planted tissue culture banana saplings in the 1st year along with the installation of the drip irrigation system. He plans to keep this field for next 10 to 12 crops using banana suckers. He is irrigating and applying fertilizer to the banana fields simultaneously through drip system. He is also using this drip irrigation system for plant protection measures. He is planting banana plants at 5 X 7 feet spacing and plantains at 5 X 8 feet spacing. He is planting at lower depths in beds with bed size of 27 inches. Approximately 1400 plant population will be maintained per 1 acre at this spacing. Flowering starts for banana at 7 month old and marketed at 11 month. For plantains, flowering starts at 9 month stage and marketed at 12-13 month. He is profiting at least net Rs.300/- per plant in a year i.e. Rs.4,20,000/- net profit per year per acre.
He is mulching alternative rows of his banana fields regularly with unused leaves and plant parts. By this, fertility and water holding capacity of the soil is improved. Microbial activity is also improved in the soil. He is scheduling his weekly fertigation plan through drip irrigation system, instead of once in a month. He is following some improved technologies to enhance the growth and size of the banana fruits and the bunches.
He is keeping harvested old banana plants besides the new plants / suckers which helping baby plants to grow profusely after the old plants starts decomposing.
