Abandoned Dirt Bike Revival, Part 2: Making Mistakes For The Win! The DR350SE Is Up And Running!

  • In the last video on this Suzuki DR 350 SE I got it working, kind of. It didn't work well, and I wasn't sure if I was going to keep it. With all the support in the comments, I decided to throw some new parts at it and get it running better. That didn't go as planned, and I made a lot of mistakes. However, it all worked out great!
I actually got some decent footwear now, ANDANDA sent me some boots to try out. I'm pretty happy with them so far, and they definitely came in handy when riding in this video! www.amazon.com...

This is giving me flashbacks. As a wee lad with a 50cc scooter, I asked a local mechanic why it was randomly cutting out for a split second every few moments at full throttle. Without even looking at it, he told me the crankshaft seals were leaking, leading to a lean condition and requiring an engine rebuild, which, of course, he'd gladly undertake for a fee. Not having the money, I set out to do my first engine rebuild. Long story short, I messed it up and ruined the crankshaft, and while diagnosing it I noticed the fuel tap was open... And dripping one drop of fuel every few seconds. Still haven't quite forgiven the mechanic, that was my grandpa's moped...

I have a Sachs Madass with and 140 Pihrana engine that was having the problem of momentarily cutting out at Max RPM. It turned out to be the aftermarket fuel cap being badly designed (or manufactured) and the air vent being blocked by the tank seal, thus reducing the fuel flow to the engine...

You restored full functionality to a 350 four stroke street legal trail bike.
It was a dead bike, destined to be scrapped and parted out, and now you can tell by the sounds it makes that it loves you, and it's so happy to be alive.
There can be no higher calling in life, and I salute you, sir!

You have such a way with words. Makes for some great intros and, in the case of this video, outro as well: "Because of all my failures, I'm calling this a complete success!" And the intro for this one was one of the best! "I gonna give you a quick overview of this episode: I make a lot of mistakes… I spend money I didn't have to… and I'm really happy about it!" I love it!

a bit overfilled but from the FB group on DRs and my personal experience with my 96' SE I recommend either ride it for a few mins or let it idle for 2-3 mins then check the oil. As you stated, the oil won't go through the frame to the motor without that pump moving oil. That is also what my Clymer manual for the DR says to do. Beyond all that, I love the videos and great to see some new 350 content, keep it up brother get that tractor running and it'll run forever. (with GOOD oil maintenance)

Theres a Different Throttle for the Non-CV carb, for sure- if your buying one, get whats called a 1/4 - turn throttle, they have a much larger drum area to pull more cable, with less twist of the wrist, you dont have to buy the Suzuki one, unless the switches are built in, in which case just buy the one for the regular Slide type pumper Carb like youre using now- Replacing that CV-Carb (Constant Velocity) was the best performance mod you could do, other easy stuff would be less restrictive exhaust and maybe a cam, but then youre talking pricey, Me and my Buddy build full race DRz400's which is the next size bigger brother to your DR350 there - Love your videos dude!

Great fun watching you fail your way to success! I just picked up a DR350 a couple weeks ago for BEANS, and luckily it just needed a complete fuel system cleaning! You did give me a light bulb moment though with the clogged petcock valve. I noticed fuel was coming through on mine, but it kept bugging me that it didn’t seem like much. So I pulled it off and disassembled it, and sure enough, just like yours it was so clogged with crap that it’s a wonder anything was able to get through. I also disassembled the carb and cleaned it, oiled the O-ring gaskets and put it back together and it doesn’t leak, lol.. The fun is definitely in seeing ‘if this works’ and then either figuring out why it didn’t, or having that moment of victory when it does! Two busted knuckle thumbs up!

I bought mine as a dirt model in '90 when they came out and I'm still riding it today though I converted it to a DualSport and have a plate (no small feat in Kalifornia!) so ''Suzi'' goes everywhere. Those universal boots don't hold up as well and can be prone to air leaks because they are designed to the point that the holes are almost a 1/3rd blocked of access. I had to modify the crap out of mine such as drill/file reliefs on the main body of the boot just to get allen head bolts to seat correctly. When I get my DR I think I will go with the over priced version or make my own. Thanks for making this video I can't get enough DR350 content.
