Variety shows were such a sign of the times throughout the 70's. From the set design to the costumes, to the choreography, to the fabulous horn section in the orchestra, and then the vocals. I so miss the family sitting around the TV set in the evenings to watch this kind of thing. Now we have UA-cam to help us in our longing for simpler days.
I never cared that this is one of the campiest things ever (I’m 26 so everything from this era is pretty campy haha), this is like all of my favorite things smashed together in one segment (I adore Bernadette as well- just saw her live- that woman doesn’t age- she looks the same!- also one of the dancers is Bernadette’s main traveling cellist, and this is how they met, at least that’s what she said during her show lol) 3 powerhouse voices singing Carole King, I don’t know what more anyone could ask for?
I would have thought this to be way too corny & showbizzy back in 1971 but I have to say I got a giant kick out of it! It's both touching & sincere and tongue in cheek & campy at the same time. Cass's solo at the end made me tear up a bit.
Oh yes, Carol's vocal talents are less known because of her tremendous comic (and dramatic) ability - but she is a fantastic singer. Here's a good example (if you're pressed for time, start at 1:37 and listen through to the end): ua-cam.com/video/0l-ED0ooDFo/v-deo.html
I'm not at all fond of this arrangement, but it's great to see/hear those three women singing together! Reese Scott, you definitely get a subscribe from me, after seeing others that you've got. Bravo!
Yeah the arrangement really sucked! However it was wonderful to hear cass blending so well with peters. The key was about 1/2 to low for cass to really shine!
I recently saw Bernadette in concert a few months back (she looks amazing! As vibrant as ever!) she mentioned one of her touring instrumentalists was a long-time friend who was a backup dancer on the Carol Burnette show- and ngl I was about excited to be in his presence as Bernadette, cause all I could think about was this iconic performance lol. I love the camp so much, it just makes me feel better on a bad day, haha
Their voices blend together so beautifully. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Sidenote: Whoever gave Cass that wig was not her friend. Another sidenote: I've been singing "You got a friend- you got a good friend- you got a very good friend" and "whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa yeahhhh" around the house for a solid week now.
Her and Here's Johnny Carson he made some unknowns famous by having them on their show -- Melanie was one and so was Cyndi Lauper as well as Janis and so many others
Odd that they appear to be holding gold painted pieces of a socket set as pretend mics. The skinny Oompa Loompa dancers also add some unintentionally comical pizzazz. Poor Carol had a harder time with the lip syncing. Good to know the three liked each other enough to go through this kookoo number together. Ahhh the 70s.
That doesn't look at all like Bernadette Peters to me (she looks very...haggard, to be polite 1:30). Ms Peters - as I remember - was quite an energetic performer. I'm not saying this isn't Bernadette, I'm just taken aback by how different she looks from how I recall her. It's terrific to see Cass - slats a treat 🥰.
I love all of these women. Carol, Cass, and Bernadette were all talented. However, I think this medley is just awful. Bernadette and Carol are singing sharp, flat, and nasally on this number. Their vocal and tonal weaknesses are grating. Cass is just fine as always. I wish Cass had been given the chance to do a quiet version of this song. I love Carol Burnett and she has done some nice singing in her time but not on this number.
agree that this arrangement was awful of an otherwise lovely original song by separately three most talented ladies; and by the way, gold lame pants flatter nobody [intro] LOL
I also love these ladies, and the song as well, but this arrangement is just horrible. I agree that Cass could have sung this song in a more gentle way and be more effective.
Carol Burnett or Carol King? Carol Burnett had a great voice...was in many musicals and cabaret shows, held her own with many "greats" over the years, was on Broadway, earned a Tony nomination...the list goes on. This particular song I think is an ugly arrangement and furthermore focuses on her lower register...but she can sing.
Yikes ... what lazy performances from such sometimes great talents ... cheezey 70's at its best. Although to be fair, there's not a whole lot one can do with the insipid You've Got a Friend.
Cass and Carol and Bernadette are so perfect together 🥁🎹🎷🎺🎤🎸🎻☮️
We'll never see such a wonderful performance again. I miss the old variety shows.

I always loved the dancers back in the 70s, the costumes and stage props. It was so enjoyable to watch variety shows.
Yep they were golden
Nothing better than Cass elliot singing carole king!! I went nuts over this one
Right!! Both icons in their own right.
You and me both.

Three amazing ladies. If Cass had lived I bet she'd kill it in Broadway.
I would have thought this to be way too corny & showbizzy back in 1971 but I have to say I got a giant kick out of it!
It's both touching & sincere and tongue in cheek & campy at the same time. Cass's solo at the end made me tear up a bit.
I felt the same!
It’s hilarious.
Now this is entertainment!! What I grew up with and still see the art that is so lost these days.
This is absolutely fantastic. Their voices blend together very felicitously. And I presume Bob Mackie did those beautiful gowns.
Love Bernadette and Cass's voices together ❤
Carol and Mama sing really great together. Bernadette can sing with anyone and sound wonderful. Those was great to look back on. ❤️
You saw everyone in the 70's , what a time to be young
Before watching this, I never realized what a powerful and musical voice Burnett had. She has very diverse and well-rounded talent.
Bernadette too -- love the fact they each sang their own verse -- and each has a different sound
Three great women with personality plus!
I guess if you have your own show, you get to sing the most. Cass has the voice of angels.
I adore each of these amazing artists.
Those mics are literally to die for ♥️
Omgosh I don’t remember this! Love them all, miss our Mama Cass!
Incrível como eram ótimas cantoras. Muita saudades desta geração.
Love Love Love this!! ❤️❤️❤️

casses voice was the best out of the three!!
I love the dresses that they are wearing. They look so classy, and they sound terrific together.
Im just gaga over Mama Cass and Carol, all 3 are great
And Bernedette,I just realized who that was......Sorry BP
Must be great to have talent like this. I'll never know
SHES INCREDIBLE..,
Bernadette is a vampire, she looks the same as she did in the early 1970s
That's what I've been saying for 40 years!
❤❤❤❤I love Cass❤❤❤❤
OUTSTANDING ‼️‼️
📻🙂
Fabulous!!!!

Ive been looking for this forever!
Fantastic!
💗💗💗 THANK YOU 😃🥰😍👍
Cass was Awesome!
Fucking fantastic. Light up heaven Cass
Yes!!!🎊 🎉
Magnificent
The glamorous days ! I had a belt like that lol
Exquisite
Wowwwww
Their voices blend together so beautifully. I thoroughly enjoyed this.

Carol had a lot of interesting guest stars on her show: she kind of took the work that Ed Sullivan left behind!
Her and Here's Johnny Carson he made some unknowns famous by having them on their show -- Melanie was one and so was Cyndi Lauper as well as Janis and so many others
thanks!
How fun --- all you gotta do is call and I'll come running to see you again -- and I'll be there (divas --
All we needed is Love/God.
Always and Forever
Fkng EPIC
And a surprise homage to Cass's "Mamas and the Papas" hit: 5:41; but perhaps gilding a lily?
I think I love chubby women more then underweight women, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh Cassssssss
Wow.
Never saw Cass with a hairdo like this. What year is this from?
Where is Vicki??
from when is this?
November 10, 1971. Was wondering the same thing. Just searched for it online. I was 3.
Wireless MICs?

True -- as usual Cass sings the harmony lol -- the other two voices just didn't blend -- three powerful divas on this one
I also love these ladies, and the song as well, but this arrangement is just horrible. I agree that Cass could have sung this song in a more gentle way and be more effective.
Am I the only one that sees three dudes in a dress?
CB is a great comedian but a lousy singer. And BP sounds awful. Cass keeps in her midrange as always and sounds fine.
Oh my god this is worse than awful - noise plain and simple.
Three tremendous voices destroyed in this horrible act
this isn't the golden girls....
It's hard to watch two great singers sing back-up to a very funny comedienne, but not a great singer!
Great voices (yes even Carol, although she's a bit nasal) but they overdid the song. Overconvoluted (I know that it's not a word, lol) it. Yikes.
I agree.. really weird arrangement..though it’s still fantastic!
@@Deer548 it’s the 70s when everything was over the top and glitzy. It was the groovy era. It was loads of fun.
This sounds hideous.....sorry!
Weird version,too much Broadway ...awful..
Loved Carol but she could not sing
Of course she could
What Carol are you talking about?King could sing this of course...

Omg bernadette is AWFUL
this is horrible
