- This is a follow up FULL tutorial to the figure 4 spring snare video I made 7 years ago. In this video, we carve out the pieces, I set the snare out, discuss it's use for fishing and include some troubleshooting tips.
MATERIALS:
2 sticks - one about 10 to 13 inches in length and the other stick about 8 inches in length. Both sticks should be about 1/2 inch in diameter.
Angle stick and bait stick from figure 4 DEADFALL set work perfect
[smaller diameter sticks work well for small game]
3 pieces of cordage. I used 550 for the video, but in application use bankline.
Knife used in this video - Bark River "Kephart" in Stainless

Actually the first time I’ve seen one of these videos, where the person making the video has a properly sharpened blade. 👍🏻
An awesome trap i was not see such a ggod one !Greeting from Hungary!
very simple and inteligent trigger i've seen lately - congrats
Best guy on the net!
I really like how sharp your knife is. I like how you explain this trap. It is a very useful trap in any situation. Great video.
That's one of the most ingenious traps I've come across in awhile.
Really cool👍👍
Outstanding presentation
Glad you did an update on that, great trigger with minimal requirements. When I was trapping as a kid I found a useful workaround for the spring pole limitations. Instead of a spring pole I threw the snare line over a high branch and hoisted up a large rock, the rock is then the motor for lifting the snare. If done right the subject is lifted well off the ground and away from other predators. Just make sure to minimize friction where the line goes over the branch. The only time it went wrong on me was when instead of a rabbit I found a Mountain Lion caught in my trap with one foot in the air, lucky for me he was busy chewing his was out as I made my escape.
Whoa! Great story, brother. What's that old joke... What's the problem with having a live cougar in your trap? Answer: You have a live cougar in your trap
Using a large rock as the engine is a great idea.
With the anchor problem solved, one is only limited by the imagination and ability to crank down the engine into it's locked position. With enough ingenuity this can be modified to lift a person off the ground
thanks for sharing your time and knowledge
Thanks my friend good clean trap
Beautiful sharp knife
great tutorial, and a really effective trap trigger. Tried it, loved it.
Had to subscribe. Very cool.
Brilliant explanation. I am more of a slingshot hunter. But this trap will help further with hunting. Cheers 🍻 thanks. Have a blessed day.
Very nice video. Thoroughly explained and executed. I will try this next weekend.
This is now my go to trap. Thank you
Wow.super excellent delivery of information. Wow.
Love your knife tell us more..
It's a bark river kephart
Not legal in OHIo which does not allow any type of powering device. Glad to learn something new.
thats awesome. If your ever locally in the san gabriels, you should join me/us. Ive been all over the place but love the history of this range.
The San Gabriel's are my stomping ground. Many fond memories.
I use this exact setup to catch ruffed grouse in fall harvest.
The latest bad news for wildlife,Rabbit Ebola. So I will set this up for the fishtrap version instead.Thanx for that Alan,Very Handy Indeed!

Great tutorial, subbed 👍🔥👍
Good work! you deserve my sub!
Cool good job thank you 👍
Excellent, thanks for that.
Thankx
Awesome
This is a very good tutorial.
It's also another way to trap a human eyeball and get it skewered. 😅
I stepped into snare when walking in the forest, it did tie up my feet and make me fall, but I just managed to struggle my feet free.
Your spring line pole needs to be a hardwood sapling so it will keep its spring.
Very slick set. I’ve been trying to modify the version demonstrated in “the trappers bible” by Eustace. I want to trap wolves with this but need a better anchor. Thinking about anchoring the snare directly to the tree and having the spring pole line connected to the snare with a metal sliding loop. See any holes in my design?
The way I'm envisioning what you're saying is the spring snare will set the cable snare, by pulling on the running end of the snare that's attached to the tree. That sounds like it would work great to set the cable snare. Try it out and let us know how well it worked. Thanks

Why not 3 loops? 1 on all sides? 🤔
What kind of knife is that you are using!
Thanks.
Bark River Kephart. I'm not sure if it's still in production
Meant to ask, is that your Diving Sparrow Kephart?
I no longer have the Diving Sparrow Kephart. This one is a Bark River Kephart. At this point in my life, I only own two knives, the red Mora I've rolled with for over 20 years (it was the one in the llbean backpack video) and this Bark River Kephart.
Truth be told, this was the first time I ever put the BR Kephart to any meaningful use. It has been a drawer queen for a long time. I bought it more as a legacy knife than a user, which is why I opted not to get it in Scandi. However, it is stainless... Somethings I'm not willing to compromise on, haha.
FYI, It’s an ‘Overhand on a bight’, not an overhand loop.
Both terms are correct. There's enough online information to corroborate the term "overhand loop." Overhand on a bite appears to be more of a climbers term. I'm guessing that is your discipline.
🇵🇬🇵🇬......
cant pull to hard on the spring pull. Better to use a weight and pully system. tie the other end of your anchor string up over a branch and to a weight heavy enough to easily pull the target up off the ground. Spring poles are too unreliable.
People who call the ground the floor
yeah bugs the crap out of me too when I mix it up.
If you use it for fishing put bait in a piece of plastic so the fish can't take your bait
