It was and is one of the most heartfelt love songs of all times.
You really appreciate their voices back then , it was real, no computerized voice enhancers etc.
It's like they actually had to have talent back then lol

This is a hard song to listen to for me. It was made in 1981 my late wife loved it . I would sing it to her In the hospital while she was wasting away from cancer. And there was nothing i could do but watch her suffer. But this song brought both of us a little happiness. Ironically my lady passed away a week after Kenny. I promised my beautiful lady that I would protect her always and I did for over 40 yrs. But i could do nothing for her with that evil cancer. I even begged GOD to give me the cancer so she didn't have to suffer so bad. But here I am on this planet alone without my lady. 😭😭😭 RIP Teresa baby..

My Father-in-law sang this at our wedding and he did such a beautiful job. He is now slowing succumbing to Alzheimer's, but I will always cherish this memory.

When he passed away,it hit me hard, i don't know him, but, i grew up listening to Manny of his song, and this was one of his greatest bay far, so calm so beautiful so much meaning full for me

Saw him in concert in 81, he dedicated this to his wife.
The fact that Kenny gave lionel props on creating the song is genuine. Artists don't do that anymore especially in R&B. For example ghetto superstar is Kenny Rogers and dolly partons song 20 years prior yet most people are just now finding that out.

A vocal expert could probably explain it better but some aspect of his voice makes it crackle in the basement of his vocal register. It became his signature sound. It showed vulnerability. I used to think it must of been the result of smoking or drinking but he did neither. You're right he is probably making the best of that vocal flaw and using it to his advantage. IMO an audience prefers vocal honesty and emotional vulnerability(baring of the soul so to speak).

Here is a little thing for you new fans. Kenny Rogers, was always in 💘, with Dolly Parton. She felt the same for him. But they were both married, to other people. So they didn't went there, so it goes. Only they will take that secret to their graves.
Lionel started writing this for The Commodores ,but the band rejected it, ,Kenny had asked Lionel for a song so he took it to him with just the first verse written and continued on writing lyric in the toilet as it was being prepared for recording...
