  • Margaret Naeser, PhD, is located at the Boston VA Medical Center, and is a Research Professor of Neurology, Boston University School of Medicine. In this interview she discusses her work studying application of transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) as a possible treatment modality to improve cognition in individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and in retired professional football players who may be developing chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). She also speaks about the application and effects of tPBM in individuals with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Not less importantly, Prof. Naeser did work investigating the effects of tPBM on individuals with stroke. In addition to discussing her work, she also elaborates on and explains the science and the principles of transcranial photobiomodulaton.

I use Neuro Gamma for my patients and monitor gamma brainwaves at Pz and Cz (in front and back of precuneus) before, during, and after. Usually gamma doubles in magnitude as high beta, alpha, and usually theta are constant. Often delta reduces as gamma increases. Gamma reduces after the session. In theory, this would provide perfusion by which Tao and amyloid plaque are pulled out. I haven't run it long term to see if there are also improvements in sleep, yet. I'm working on it with myself, too.

Hard to find any red light NIR system that pulses. The ones that do charge a lot. But one can buy a pulse controller at 40 pulse per second and combine with a simple 850nm NIR security light and you basically get something similar for $80. Many studies argue the pulse or flickering needs to be 10-40mhz not 40 HZ. Regardless 40 per minute makes sense since it supposedly mimics the brain. Be careful if you are likely to get seizures or have epilepsy. I am researching for my wife who had a massive stroke and lost half her brain. BUT with stroke comes seizures and my wife will be on pills for the rest of her life to mitigate them. decisions decisions. Hope this helps.

Thank you for sharing your comment. Last week i purchased a NIR light and brooder lamp. I'll have to see if i can find an attachment to make it flicker 10 - 40 x /minute. Interesting topic.

What do you think about the difference between the Neuronic vs Vielight. I bought a Neuronic at the beginning of the year but I've heard great things about the Vielight

    Hello Margaret
Would you recommend this device for my mum that has Alzheimer's
The device is expensive and does come with a six month guarantee but I am not sure if my mum would wear such a device although it sounds very impressive
Or if you know of anything else we could try
Any info would be greatly appreciated
Must mention though we live in the UK
    Thank you

Dear Marie, this is the account of Vielight Inc., the manufacturer of the Neuro Gamma and Alpha, and other photobiomodulatiton devices. You cannot reach Prof. Naeser here. Further more Prof. Naeser focuses in her work on studies for TBI and stroke recovery, and some other directions, but not Alzheimer's.

There is a lot of research being done in the space of transcranial photobiomodulation and alzheimers. It sounds productive to look deeper into the research for your mom! I hope she is doing well

I bought this for my mother, which had mild to moderate Alzheimer's at the time. I tried it on her for one year. It did NOTHING!!! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!! Instead it gave her headaches because it overheated her head. It also left her with some small burn spots on her scalp. There's already plenty of neural inflammation in her brain. Why would anyone think that frying it some more would do good. I basically threw away my HARD EARNED money. I was desperate to help my mother, which her condition is a lot worse now. Don't buy it. Save your money. It does NOT work, and NO, it does NOT slow down the disease.

Why didn’t you return it after 6 months if it was totally ineffective? Could have got 80% of your money back. Can I purchase the device from you? Surely someone would be willing to buy it even if you don’t sell it to me.

I thought I should give it more time, give it a longer chance to work, that's why I didn't return it. That was dumb of me. Sorry, I threw it away long a go. At that time, the cost was around $1,800, I can't believe the cost now. Good luck to you.

@@rosek.5531 they do say it’s not effective for everyone, sorry didn’t work for you. Maybe something was wrong with the unit. I just bought the duo online.

If they only had 2 cases OR 11 cases.. they need to do more research before spouting off about this. Poor science.
