  • All valuations were correct at the time of broadcast. This delightful collection came to this gentleman via his parents, who were in Iran in the early 1930s. These pieces were brought to Iran by White Russians as their only means of currency as they fled revolution and civil war. The collection includes a kovsch, a cigarette lighter and a match case. Hugh Scully and the experts from Antiques Roadshow take a look at some fantastic antiques and the history and stories surrounding them. This clip was filmed in Houghton Hall in 2002.

Picture the Russian family in Iran, selling the family treasures just to survive. I wonder what became of them.

Some of them left for Europe, but some stayed. In Iran there is a sizable community of Russian immigrants. Or at least there was until the Iranian revolution of 1979 when many Iranians left the country.

I have arthritis in my fingers. I want one of those!

My wife has rheumatoid arthritis in both hands ... she finds the only thing that helps is gold.
Gold rings and gold bangles for the wrists.
Admittedly an expensive remedy if you don't have any gold jewellery lying around!

At the risk of being thought pedantic, if it was the early 1930s his parents were in Persia and not Iran. (Persia until 1935)

It is a way to show respect for culture and people, if you notice such historic facts. I myself know Persians who call themselves Persians (maybe a result of naming of Persia into a nazi driven "Land of Arians").
