  • How do you make a Suction Excavator?
Episode 1 - 'The black metal' with manufacturer MTS Suction Systems UK Ltd
Peter Haddock visited the factory in Germersheim , Germany, for our latest mini-series with Frank Gowdy from the UK, walking him through the manufacturing process.
In this episode, they look at how Volvo Trucks, Mercedes-Benz Trucks UK, MAN Trucks Kraków and Western Star Trucks chassis arrive at the facility South of Frankfurt to be transformed into suction excavators.
The first process is to install the transfer gearbox onto the chassis, as Frank explained:
"This gearbox allows us to transfer power from the engine to the drive for the fan system that ultimately provides the suction needed.
"There are a number of fan options available, and our latest 'Power Plus' double fan falls between our double and twin options. This is becoming more popular as it offers additional power when needed for heavier duty applications."
With each model made to an individual customer specification, the next part of the process is the 'black metal', which is the main housing of the suction excavator components.
Frank: "These segments are produced in another facility and mounted onto the chassis to check everything fits together properly.
"The black components then go onto the paint shop and following that phase are fitted out with the key components before being tested and shipped to customers across the globe."
For our next episode, we will see some of the key components fitted to a variety of trucks, and learn more about how suction excavators work, so stay tuned to our channels
