What is a ketogenic diet or lifestyle?
    • A diet where 75% of your calories come from fat, 20% from protein and 5% from carbohydrates.
    • The basic goal of a ketogenic diet is to have your body adapted to using fat as the primary fuel source.
    • A low-carbohydrate diet is where 20-30% of your calories come from fat, 50% or more from protein and 10-20% from carbohydrates
    • A Keto diet is low-carb but a low-carb diet is not necessarily going to cause ketosis
    • Any diet that reduces the amount of carbohydrates, especially those with a high glycemic value, is beneficial to your health. More on the glycemic index later.
The major benefits of the ketogenic diet include
Preventing, controlling, and even reducing diabetes
Reduced risk of cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney failure, etc
    Reducing inflammation throughout the body
    Eliminating brain fog
Benefits of a ketogenic to the outdoors person
Reduced hunger (reduced the hangry syndrome)
Clearer mind and better decision making
Body stored fuel sources are greater. About 2000 calories in glucose stored in our muscles, but we have upwards of 130,000 calories stored in body fat
Carried food stores are lighter and less bulky (calorie density of Fat VS Protein, carbs)
    • Carried food stores are lighter and less bulky (calorie density of Fat VS Protein, carbs) Example:
Based on a 3000 calorie a day diet
    Traditional carb-heavy diet
    • Weight per day 754 g (26.6 ounces) (1.66 lb)
    o 50% carbs (1500 calories) = 425 g
    o 25% protein (750 calories) = 224 g
    o 25% fat (750 calories) = 105 g
    Ketogenic diet
    • Weight per day 583 g (20 ounces) (1.25 lb)
    o 5% carbs (150 calories) = 42 g
    o 30% protein (900 calories) = 267 g
    o 65% fat (1950 calories) = 273 g
Weight savings of just under half a pound per day.

I have been keto for 6 years and my wife about 4 years. Best thing we ever did for our health. I did it mainly for weight loss but have received so many more benefits from the lifestyle change. In short, I'm down over 100 pounds, no more gout attacks, blood pressure and blood sugar the best it's been in ages. My energy level is better and consistent throughout the day. No more mid afternoon sleepiness that you get from a high carb meal,
My wife has also lost weight, reversed her IBS, lowered her blood pressure and blood sugar.
We are both 65 now and feel so much better.
For anyone interested in investigating keto there are many videos on UA-cam by doctors that explain and can guide you into the lifestyle. I don't say diet because it is not something you do short term to lose a few pounds. It's a lifestyle that will truly change your life...for the better!

I've been on keto for about 7 years. I finally admitted that diabetes was creeping up on me and found that keto was the most straightforward way to short circuit the progression. I sometimes go carnivore for a few days, but I like having some nuts, cabbage, radishes and such. One of my biggest benefits, besides not graduating to insulin, is in spending much less time on food. It just isn't such a big deal any more. I've lost about 25 pounds and some blood pressure too. The steady balance, with or without food, is quite remarkable after so long stoking the fire every 4 hours.
It does affect my camping plans. I'm not looking to boil up noodles anymore. In fact, my only motivation for boiling water is for tea.
I hadn't thought of turning seeds and coconut flakes into some kind of porridge. I may try a variation on your mixture. Most nuts and seeds have some carbs, so I'll have to pick my own balance. My understanding is that I should be able to tolerate some carbs while hiking and camping because the extra activity tends to suck up and directly burn some carbs without much risk of the blood sugar and insulin roller coaster. That doesn't mean my guts will like having a different digestion balance.
In any event, my stove and pot build doesn't have the same design goals as during my carb days. I absolutely need to cook at medium heat and simmer so I can fry up some spam or saute tuna in butter. The high speed race to boil isn't important. So a Trangia style stove is a better tool. If I make a pepsi can penny stove, then it needs a good adjustable simmer ring. I like the simplicity of alcohol stoves, but I need to pick from the designs that can be controlled. There's a German deli up in Phoenix that has German style hunter sausage that doesn't need refrigeration. I need to remember to pick some up for my next outing.

Woo hoo, I won! What did I win Mark, what did I win?! 🎉🥳
So I switched to Keto for two years. I started because it seemed like bread was giving me digestive issues, and I sort of kept cutting simple carbs, then most of the complex ones.
I lost my belly, and ate much less, and like you, I could go most of the day without eating, and never got hangry. I went off it recently, but am planning to go back.
I don’t know if it really is for everyone though. Like look at the Japanese diet, which uses a lot of rice, and they live pretty darn long, for example. I think the most important thing is to eat whole, unprocessed foods, and for people to pay attention to how their bodies react to their diets.
So a keto question I have regarding the outdoors, I’d like to see something on good shelf stable foods for extended periods in the woods when it’s warm out. A lot of keto foods don’t store so well in the heat.
As for the tree, I’m only guessing, but I know some pine trees cones won’t open unless they’re exposed to high heat such as a fire, so they know there will be sun for the seedlings.
And most important of all, I had no idea you had cancer. I hope we all get to keep being glad to know you for a lot longer.

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  2 місяці тому

You won my respect sir😉 You are right on about the Jack Pine but not the first to say it😅. The best shelf stable keto food I have found so far is pemmican and erbswurst (video coming). The fat is the issue. Hard to keep it from going rancid in the heat. I have looked at a few freeze dried meals but they are so expensive. I will continue to look to see what options I can find. Thanks for commenting Jim

Spam in the foil bags works well. It may be a little more processed than you like. Tuna in the foil bags is a good alternative, but you'll need to bring some fats. There's also chicken in the foil bags. Coconut oil travels well and they make little individual pouches of coconut oil. The Indians from actual India have had shelf stable butter for a long time as ghee. Just get the less aggressively cooked version for best nutrition. Corned beef is basically pemmican in a can without any berries or nuts. You have to put up with the extra can weight and trash. One can is more than a single typical meal, so it works better with two hikers. Can you trust it to last until breakfast for the second half? I'm not sure. It is basically pemmican, so it might.
If you have a german deli nearby, then traditional hunter sausage doesn't need refrigeration. Duke's Shorty sausages are shelf stable, as well as better quality "no sugar" beef/pork sausages and beef jerkies. Nuts are great, such as pecans and macadamia nuts. Peanuts have some carbs, but you body should burn small amounts without problem, especially if you only eat them on trail. Of course you can freeze some meat and insulate it well to cover the first dinner and breakfast.
The vegetables are difficult. Radishes will last a little while, but after a couple days you're kind of on carnivore. Some of the seeds, such as pumpkin, may fill some vegetable needs.

Very good to hear the news about your improved health and the active role you're taking in it, Mark! From my perspective, it's too important an element of well-being to outsource to anyone else!
A couple of things about that are worth noting -- the blood glucose required by some cells and tissues is easily produced when needed by our liver; and, that mental clarity you are enjoying is not only beneficial for improvement in mood -- it also improves our capability to support other functions that are fundamental to health. For example example, you might realise that specific changes to breathing or balance or strength are needed -- and pursuing such goals in the company of others who are like-minded is mutually beneficial.

Thank you, Mark. I have greatly reduced my carbohydrate intake over the past three years or so, but consumed many more than usual on my Appalachian Trail thruhike attempt last year. I lost 25 pounds in the 1100 miles of hiking that I did, and had planned to get more serious about returning to my pre-hike diet after finishing the trail, which, of course, was not to be. My average weight tends to be around 210 lbs. At one point in my hike I was down to 180 lbs, but I was getting weak. After my knee injury I couldn't walk very far and fell into a funk, treating myself with familiar "comfort foods," between meal snacking on sweets, and high carbohydrate desserts.
It's time to do an about face. Tonight I turned down the rice which was supposed to be served with the chicken.
Thanks for the pep talk. Btw, I am up to 218 lbs. Not good, even though I have "big bones." Take care, my friend.

G'day Mark, Q&A is a fantastic addition to your channel mate. Doesnt matter to me that you're over there and I'm over here, ...... I'm interested in nature everywhere ; )
With the Jack Pine seeds; because they dont have any sunscreen and want to get down in the shade ; ) ....... wouldn't you @ 50 deg C ; )
Seriously though; if they're anything like many of our natives, I'm guess'n post bushfire regeneration. Also, it did occur to me that bushfires come with thermal gusts, so perhaps at that temp, to blow them away out of the danger zone and into new areas for reproduction ? ...... just a thought.
Re: Keto. Nice simple explanation mate, aligns perfectly with the little I know on the subject and well done including the relevance for us outdoors folk.
Personally I do currently "endeavor" to go low carb for general health, and I'm think'n should I ever go over to Keto specifically, I'll be better placed to make the transition. I do like a nice grainy bread and I'll eat 'em up well enough, though cant say I'm a huge fan, of brown rice and pasta, ....... far, far, worse is ....... low carb frothies taste like dishwater ; )
    Cheers Duke.

I’m constantly low on vitamin D3, so I take a multivitamin and a D3 dose. I bet there are a lot of people who are low on D3. One of the benefits is to help convert glucose into energy. One thing that has helped me, is not eating large meals, mornings especially. My last blood test showed my A1C and cholesterol dropped, and my D3 levels have increased. Perhaps when I retire, a few more years yet it will be possible to change the eating habits of a lifetime and hope it’s not too late. When I learned about the mushroom tea and tincture from you and started foraging and doing it I was amazed with how much inflammation I was experiencing and didn’t realize it until it was gone. Actually doing something about oxidation and inflammation really turned my health around. Then having the realization that I was eating far too much and far too often began me adopting more of a hunter gatherer style of diet. Like you I can often go all day long and not feel hungry at all. I don’t feel weak or shaky from not eating and I noticed that I feel best when I eat less. Thanks for sharing this information Mark. 50 F really isn’t that hot. But it is hotter than normal for summertime temps not aided by fire. 50 F would be air temps aided by a fast moving fire. As the first burns through the underbrush, it creates a nice layer of fertile ash, with the pH of the soil modified for the seeds of the pine to germinate in. Lots of phosphorus and potassium in that ash.

Mark, I think it is good for us to not be carbohydrate dependent. Something like an 8 hour eating window can get us the so called keto flu and after that horrible thing and our bodies get able burning fat and not ever feel hungry no matter how many time without eating.
We will still desire food, even those pizzas and chips etc. But we can do just fine without those carbage.
It is just when we start eating healthy, I don't thing we need be in ketosis all the time or do that much intermittent fasting.
I worry about my cholesterol level 6. Is that because I've been eating a fried egg every morning. I just don't really know.

I also have ADHD since I can remember, so my body doesn't necessarily function like others. When I used to take medication, my OCD became prevalent, so I altogether quit my meds, to live a healthier lifestyle.
I have in my 64 years learned what keeps most of my ADHD symptoms under some control, to be able to live without meds. Meds have ruined my liver and kidneys, I even quit smoking Feb. 29, 1992.
I now self medicate with strong and lots of COFFEE.
My forgetfulness is BECAUSE of my ADHD and the Flowers need watering, oh I forgot that rock at the end of the driveway, my dishes have to be washed, oh yes, get mail, Pooh look at the pretty butterfly, the clothline is sagging to the Northside, my ebike needs to be aired up... it's like that ALL DAY LONG...
I have OCD when it comes to my closets and flashlights...as well as my pets. 5 cats, one dog and 7 chickens...and 14 acres of woodland.
Depression is another problem for me... I refuse to take medication, so I am looking into herbal medicine as well as a better diet in my life. I watch lots of German documentaries on healthcare for myself, and when going to the Doctor I let them know from the start that I won't take pills, but ask them for alternative medicine like herbal teas, etc. I rather chew on a Willow tree bark then take an aspirin, BECAUSE I get Super high from regular pain killers... I use a TENS machine for any physical pain in my body.
I haven't learned about this keto thing yet, but I will dive into it little by little. Thank you again.

I enjoyed this very informative video, much appreciated. 👍 I've toyed with the idea of trying a ketogenic diet, but never followed through with it. Perhaps it's time I give it some more thought? 🤔 Thanks for sharing, take care my friend and Cheers!

Unfortunately Jack Pine need a forest fire to open those cones to release the seeds. The keto diet, love it but it didn't love me back so much. lol I think there can be genetic influences that can affect whether or not it will work for an individual. My family history is high LDL and high triglycerides. When I started the keto diet my LDL shot way up as well as my triglycerides and they remained up as long as I was on the diet. My doctor was very concerned since some family members have a history of mid to older age heart conditions. When I entered menopause my values above increased again. I was gaining weight around the middle and just couldn't seem to get it off. I needed to lose the abdominal weight because I have spinal issues and if I didn't I wouldn't be able to keep hiking and light backpacking. For me, I had to really cut back on saturated fat. Not only meat but plantbased as well, like coconut oil. I eat carbs but try to stick to whole food ones. I now listen to my body and blood work values and adjust by the information they provide. I, like you now feel healthier than I have for years despite some severe arthritic issues. I think your words of wisdom at the end are so true. I believe processed anything is not good and even cutting back is a wonderful thing. I am not saying that I never have a treat of something that is not so good for me, because I have and do occasionally. We also have to keep in mind that too much of a good thing is not always the best either. It is human nature to go overboard sometimes in either direction. lol Thanks for sharing your experience with everyone. It is great to hear what works for different people, that knowledge is so useful. :) :) P.S. Great to see you out for a brew! I am looking forward to more of that once I retire in a few months. :)

Hi Jacky. No question there are genetic outliers who the keto diet does not work for. I recall when I first started my LDL shot up considerably. It has since gone back down. I learned that I could influence the LDL/HDL ratio by what type of fat I ate (saturated VS unsaturated). I have also learned that triglycerides are the better indicator of risk. For me, my diet leans toward high protein, moderate fat and low-carb. So important to get enough protein, especially as we age. Thanks for commenting

@@MarkYoungBushcraft Yes, you are right! High triglycerides are the indicator to worry about, more so than LDL. Now, I would in a minute do the stricter keto while going through any kind of cancer treatment. It could make a lot of difference and it may enhance cancer cell death. :)

Could you please share more specifics about your diet (recipes, etc.)? I tried keto for a couple of months back in 2015 but found it difficult to stick to as the meal prep took so much longer than my family's typical diet, and it was hard to find good meal options that weren't just 'lazy keto'.

I have a playlist of keto recipes I make in the woods. I find my recipes mostly on YT although they are meant for home eating. I change them up for the woods. I will likely talk more about meal prep in the future. Thanks for commenting

Mark, what was your diet pre-Keto?

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  2 місяці тому

Very little to no fast-foods. Occasional pizza. No sugary drinks. Mostly whole grain products. Variety of meat sources. Very few desserts. Having said that, I found a lot of products I ate had sugar added. Thanks for commenting

Is the Jack Pine also known as Fire Pine because the canes do not open until they have been exposed to a forest fire?
