I think the biggest issue was he played in the era before central contracts which meant he had a heavy county workload on top of increasingly more and more international cricket. That was the biggest problem for England bowlers they had masses of first class cricket to get through unlike other countries. The central contracts finally gave them some proper time to rest and recover.
Darren Gough was a brilliant bowler who could swing the ball and bowl good yorkers. He is underrated and was very unfortunate to be a part of a comparatively weaker team, his swinging yorkers were lethal. He was very similar to Waqar Younas.
I was at the SCG the day Gough took his famous hat-trick. The ball which got his third wicket would've knocked over a top order batsman, let alone a no 10. Over the years he certainly was our best ever exponent of reverse swing. The fact he's not that tall for a fast bowler and had a slingly action helped.
90s England had many brilliant individuals - Atherton, Thorpe, Stewart, Gough, Caddick, Hick, etc. It's a real pity that did not translate into success.
Imagine if you will how successful he would have been with Anderson and Broad with perhaps Swann all in the same team. He was under rated perhaps because of the lack of pressure at the other end.
Michael Slater could learn something from at 2:34, there might be no more biased commentator in cricket than Slater currently now that Shastri's not in the box
My dads claim to fame was that he smacked Dazzler for six over is head. The thing is, as the story goes, my dad was 35 and dazzler was 12 opening the bowling for Darton. Not a great claim to fame, but he dined out on it for a long time.

Personally I thought he was overrated. He was naturally medium pace bowler who got injured a lot pretending he was fast….which he wasn’t.
