Amazing, thanks for sharing. I owned BMW's and Harleys before. Most of those bikes had some minor or bigger issues. I thought this is normal until I got my first Japanese bike. Currently I own a Honda. Got it 3 years ago, put 25000 miles on it and had no issues so far. This is my new normal.
Hi again, in response to stalling. Yes it stalled the other day, only been on Ducati a couple of months. I took off from the lights as usual, with a bit of speed. Blamed myself for dropping the clutch to quick. I normally ride the clutch on a fast take off so the front doesn't lift. Apart from these hicks, the bike is amazing, the power, speed, sound and handling are a blast. Got the R&B tail tidy on now. I'm 60 years old, but when riding I'm 30. Wayne.
Sorry to hear the Duc experience has taken a turn for the worse. I owned a couple of them sixteen years ago and Duc always went out of their way to cover warranty problems. They even covered one for me a year and many thousands of miles out of their 2 year warranty.
Little update: I cancelled my service contract with my crappy local dealer (had paid $2400 for 6 services, had done only 1 service and was able to get only $1100 back!) Do not buy service contract from dealer, unless you know them, because if the service department is crappy, you are stuck with your contract.
I've always loved ducati bikes . Always wanted one .beautiful machines with such a heritage but even now under Audi ownership theres still some glaring issues. Im sure eventually in a few years time things will be top notch but for now ,for now I honestly have to say i'll stay away . Very happy with my Ktm superduke 1290 .It has minor issues to (not easy to make a perfect + exciting bike ) but very minor such as 1 led turn signal had water in it after a serious downpour, small leak from an o-ring and the noisy front disk rotors. All issues fixed an after 10k miles its still a such an awesome weapon to ride .. ask youtuber snowcat which machine he'd rather be on ;-)
+Yashin Nil lol you know fuck all about Ducati then. Every single bike manufacturer has issues at some point. It's the service department that has caused the issue not the manufacturer.
No. The bike is/was a lemon. A new bike does not just turn off. The service team didn't fix the issue and didn't seem to have a clue, but the issue is a manufacturing issue, amplified by shitty service. Had the bike not had an issue, the service department wouldn't have been involved.
I tested 1200R, very much the same quality. I don't think that the quality is necessarily low, but I know for fact that bike suffers from poor assembly. Did you hear about XDiavel's recall? The rear tire had some kind of problem, once the investigated, they figured that the rear tire was installed incorrectly on so many bikes, right off the bat! I looked at the photos, it seemed as if the tire was installed by a 12 year old!
I love the Italian design they are awesome and unique, but I will never own one, they are not reliable for the large amount of money you pay for it. I had many bikes in the past, but under my personal opinion and experience Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha are the most trouble free and most reliable motorcycle manufacturers you'll find. Safe riding mates, cheers.
Wow, I can't believe the problem you and your friend have had. I am really glad you made this video. This was the bike I was considering buying and now I think I will get my other choice (KTM Super Duke). A UA-cam by the name of snowcat had a ducati hypermarket with similar problems. sorry for the troubles!
WOW! Man I think you really need to keep escalating this with Ducati. If one person tells you that it's not a problem, ask to speak someone above them and keep going until you get it fixed. That is insane that someone would tell you that rear wheel locking up is normal and OK. That is a huge safety issue! I hear you about the dealer. They are terrible and most of the techs there have no clue what they are talking about. Good luck getting is fixed soon!
Hey man ill help u out. I'm a mechanical engineer and amateur automobile mechanic. 1. The random stalling sounds like a fuel starvation issue. This can be caused by a bad throttle position sensor. You can try taking it off and reinstalling it. This issue also plagues cars and its hard to diagnose because it's intermittent. 1b. It can also be caused by vapor lock. Fuel tanks have vent tubes to release vapor pressure and some have a special foam in them to prevent the fuel from sloshing around inside. Sometimes what happens is the fuel line gets pressurized with fumes rather than actual fuel and when it gets to the injectors nothing comes out so the bike stalls and has trouble restarting. That would explain why the bike has difficulty starting on a hot day. You can try opening the fuel cap to let out the vapors. Then cranking it a few times to purge the line. Also make sure you keep the fuel above 1/4. 2. As for the parts falling off thats being caused by vibrations, and the types of fasteners used. The solution is to use a bit of blue loctite on the threads of the screws and bolts. That will solve all those issues. The one holding the silencer in the muffler is the same issue. The muffler is getting hot the metal is expanding and the vibrations made the screw go lose and back out. Thats gonna keep happening in afraid 3. For the foot peg, try removing the peg and painting it then reinstall it with a bit of loctite on the fastener. Because of the design of the peg its going to keep self deploying because of the vibrations and g forces. If you want to tighten it up the paint will give it a few thousands of material to help increase the friction and keep it locked in place. 4. Light and electronics issue sounds like a binding wire, get the bike on a center stand turn the steering left to right at full lock the wires should have some play in them. If they dont they're too tight. Also check the plugs they may not be tight enough and vibrations from riding are causing the connection to get loose.
Beautifull and expensive bike, but quality very very very poor I wannted to buy Panigale 1299S this august. But videos from some other guys and definitely your video have changed may mind. I will not buy Ducati . Never. i am very sorry for your problems, but you have saved very much money and problems and stress to me. Thank You..
I feel your pain. Got myself a new 2016 multistrada, and its been unreliable since 700 miles. 5 month later i have 3000 miles on it, but Ducati has stepped up to the plate. They are having it back with a buy back program. So it will be gone bu the end of this month. I dont think i will own another Ducati. All the issues were with the valvetrain and associated parts! dvt etc
ua-cam.com/video/sx4EO6Sxa0Q/v-deo.html Most unreliable Ducati Shame on Ducati to launch such a product in 🇮🇳 India without any R&D. They are still in denial mode and absolutely clueless about the defect. Buying this Italian beauty has become a big pain for many. I came across atlest 5 motorcycles with exactly the same defect. Kindly watch this video and suggest if anyone knows a solution. Jai Hind and Ride Safe!
Its not strange to hear all these problems. I live in India and have a Ducati 795 Monster. As a machine, handling, braking and engine I simply love it. But...my headlight same off going over a rutt on the road! I stuck it, re wedded it but after a few months it came off again. Now I put a meat tie down before any long distance trip. Then at a gas station another bike banged me and broke my rear indicator. The design is such that it is literally stuck to the fender.. so again I have stuck it, banded it and now its fine. My left hand mirror broke and for the life of me I haven't been able to fix it properly. Now, for sometime it is reinforced with a strong rubber band! In two years I have done 23000km without a hiccup... I jet hope it stays that way. Now for the service part..All manufacturers first reaction is 'we don't know how to ride"..so Ducati is no exception ..
Hi there, yes I agree. My monster1200s will lock the back wheel too. I complained and was told not to rev the engine when going down through the gears. But I have been doing this for 60 years. Sometimes we need to keep the revs up, especially climbing a hill. I am fearful that it may lock up at a critical moment. As you mentioned a tight corner, any corner or crossing a busy freeway. I am always mindful of this problem. Cheers Wayne.
2014 Monster 1200 with 11000 miles on the clock. Never once had any of these issues. Also a 2014 Hypermotard 821 with 41000 miles on it and same thing no issues. Only warranty work was on the Monster with rear brake master cylinder which wouldn't grab well. I have other friends that have the same bike and none of have had any of these issues except the rear brake being a bit weak. It is very well possible that this is an intermittent issue and they can't seem to figure it out since it is very hard to duplicate. This happens all the time at mechanic shops with intermittent issues. It happens to any bike or car regardless of the brand. My experience: 5 years at Subaru of Stevens Creek in San Jose and 11 years at independent shops as a service adviser. This is not an engine issue "mechanical". This is emissions related issue such as rich/lean conditions caused by many factors such as moisture level, defective Camshaft Crankshaft Position Sensors, a defective EVAP Canister "due to over filling the fuel tank which is something i see all the time", or a software issue on your Engine Control Module. Until they duplicate it OR it generates a faulty code in ECM it is impossible to fix it.
I have a 2010 Monster 1100 with the same engine shut off problem!!! Did some research (here in Brazil dealer is no go), and the problem seems to be the Coils... When the engine gets hot, coils start to fail...
WOW - Sounds like mostly Dealer service department and assembly issues. Change your dealer dude - or start fixing stuff yourself. Get to know your bike and double-check everything yourself. I'd check the parts catalog, even that aluminum trim issue may be because they did not stick it on right or is missing something. I have an 821, for about a year and a half now. No issues whatsoever - I love it!!! I know it's a different model than yours, but the chassis, the passenger pegs, turn signals, the headlight and wiring, etc are all the same as yours. The headlight wiring harness on yours was most probably not routed correctly when they assembled the bike, that's why it broke. Your passenger pegs are either missing their tension springs or they are installed incorrectly or broken. The engine shutoff issue sounds like there is a loose connector or a bad sensor somewhere. Most importantly, fix that engine shut-off issue. You are going to crash otherwise. Specially putting the clutch in after the rear wheel locks up. You'll be thrown if the wheels are not traveling in the same direction when you pull the clutch. Take it to another dealer. These guys, your current dealer, either don't know how to read the scanner or just don't like you. (By "scanner" BTW, I mean the device you connect to the bike's onboard computer and read the fault errors)
I have a 2016 Monster 1200R and have put a few thousand miles on it, from new. Zero problems (turn signals and aluminum covers all fine) except it did stall once when I was making a turn and the engine was still cold. It doesn't 'lock' the rear wheel, it just has strong engine braking. Restarted (just dumped the clutch to bump start it before stopping) and it started no problem. I wouldn't have been happy with my dealer if they'd extended a stock cable to bodge the lighting. Get a different dealer who has a certified Ducati Master Mechanic. The build quality on the bike seems very high to me. I've had 31 bikes, generally prestige brands, and I'm very happy with the build and reliability of my third Ducati, since Audi bought them they just seem to get better all the time. Honda make very reliable vehicles, but they're boring and their dealer suck. You pays your money and make your choice! :-D
@@FiveMCity I sold it shortly after this post. Within a further 1,000 miles the engine blew up for the new owner - oops! I've owned several bikes since this one, including two Multistrada V4S without any problems.
@@RichDunn I just purchased a used ducati.. less than 8k miles, put no more than 50 on it and it's giving me the same issue as described in the video. I'm going to see if there's an update for the code and simply sell the bike. With Ducati, it's a hit or miss. You luck up and drive for 50k miles no serious issues or one with issues back to back with less than a few thousand. Make me wish I'd kept my S4r, 15k miles and had no issues.
@@FiveMCity There is much to be said for keeping a bike that's never had a fault. Of course you've got to love the bike, and not be too distracted by shiny new toys, and personally I do struggle with the latter! I currently have a 2024 R1300GS Option 719 that's let me down 3 times (video going live on Friday), and so I wish I'd kept my last MTS V4S, which ran faultless for 8k miles. Sometimes you just get a bad specific example of a bike. And in those situations, if you can afford to, and desire something else that you can trade for, best take a hit and get something else IMHO.
@@RichDunn I’m getting to the point that it’s better to own a Duc for a year, sell, and buy the next year, but like what you said you got to love the bike, and I do, just wish the quality control was a bit better. Left up to me I’d like to keep the bike core a lifetime.
I've been riding my 1200 monster for a year and never encountered any of those things that you mentioned. I think you're just unlucky. A lot of people have mentioned the problem where if you switch it off and it's hot won't start. Also they have mentioned stalling issues. If I'm not mistaken all those people had one thing in common, they were based in USA. Maybe you have different emission regulations that forces ducati to tweak the bikes and hence the problems. The only problem that i have with the monster was condensation in the dashboard which was replaced under warranty.
If you switch it off when it's hot, the vapor lock is caused by the charcoal canister required by California CARB emissions. Either remove it, or open the fuel tank.
realy sorry for all issues you been having with the bike it's a lovely bike and i was thinking to get one of this just before your vids. really sad for ducati no fear you pay all the money and then you find ducati dealers take in jokes with you. hope more people see your video and ducati react on this. please do video if you know other monsters and what reliability problems they have. be safe
"Hope more people see your video and Ducati react on this." I hope that more people will see it too. As for Ducati, I don't think that she will ever see it and also react on it. Ducati is from these companies that the money is their highest priority, and which company's isnt, right? But Ducati seems to care more for the how much money they will earn after from each buy, than how much good their products will be for their buyers. There are good companies and bad companies. Usually cellphone manufacturers and computer manufacturers respect the feedbacks of their buyers/customers and try to improve their products. On this unfortunately you cannot compare the car & motorcycle manufacturers with the other manufacturers that I mentioned above. That is an other story. Car & Motorcycle manufacturers design and produce a vehicle with base the needs that the manufacturers think that the people should have, not what they really want to have for their own needs. With this thinking Ducati seems to be a bad company while other famous companies such as Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki, etc., seem to be better even and without feedbacks.
I got a new monster 1200S, in Bay Area ... Issues after issues. 1. Coolant engine hose leaking cause of poor installation. 2. Poor quality small reservoir clutch and brake, they leak from the cap. ( after I fast ride 100-140 mph), your cap will look wet at the tread. Brought the bike at motor cafe over and over. They said "we fixed it, it was water". The bike never saw water. 2 days later, leaking again, I tested "the water" and it's brake fluid. 3. Hot day, the bike won't start. (Same issue with my 1100s before). Problem is call "vapor lock". Solution, open your tank cap, wait 5-10 sec then start the bike. Turn off bike, close the cap. Done. IT'S THAT AWESOME FOR $18000 bike!?
I also bought my bike from Motor Cafe, I don't trust their service staff at all! This is exactly what happened to me, they told me multiple times that the problem is solved, only later to discover that the problem was never taken care of from the very beginning!
Yeah vapor lock happens in all vehicles cars typically have a vent tube to prevent it and fuel foam or baffles inside the tank to prevent it from sloshing about. :)
This guy's calmly makes a video explaining everything. Me going with the bike on a tow truck and throwing punches to some random guy in the warranty department. Damn bro, don't know how are u some calm. After that. "oh ur here again" WTF!!!! I'm so pissed and i don't even have a Ducati
Wow. Sounds to me like a crappy dealer. I know some Ducati's have issues like the ones that you describe but I believe that for the most part they are reliable. I have two a 2003 super sport and a 2012 Streetfighter. The SS has literally never given me a problem not even one and I have about 30 k one her. The Streetfighter has only about 7k on it but same thing no issues. Every brand of bike has issues of some sort but a good dealer is key to getting them solved and it sounds like you don't have that.. Best of luck and hope you can get this fixed they truly are great bikes to ride.
My wife’s 2016 Monster 1200 has the same issue with the engine shutting down unexpectedly. Took it in to the local dealer and was told that they updated some software and that should fix it. It did not. At first I thought it may be a handling issue but my wife is an experienced rider and never had these kinds of issues with any of her other bikes. Then I took it out and had the same problem. The bike just shuts down about 3-5 times every 500 miles. This is absolutely terrifying!! Bike is back in the shop with no answers. Ducati North America has been no help. We bought it brand new and have taken very good care of it and now I am afraid to have her ride it in case it shuts down and she gets hurt or worse. Unacceptable quality. This bike is gorgeous, unsafe JUNK!!!!!!!!
So I did buy the Ducati monster 1200 and I love it but didn't get any issues you mentioned but ran into new issue, the cooling fan would automatically turn on hours after i last rode , one time I caught it running in the middle of the night when the engine was dead cold and keys off. even without the keys in on !!!!!....anyways my dealer said its the BBS problem which would take 3 weeks to replace so in the mean time I just disconnected both Cooling fans after I parked, just a temporary fix but it worked until they fixed it with new parts and everything is fine now. Apart from that I have put on1500km in 25days and did my first and service so far so good.
I got a 2016 ducati. I found 2 pinched wires already. The hardstop for the steering lock on the lower triple tree broke. I had to get the petrol tank brazed as there was a small leak above the hinge. I love the bike. I put loctite on everything. I would tackle fixing any problems myself. I would source a strong spring for your rear footpeg .
It's a Ducati and can be a pain. Had an 821, perfect, zero issues. 1200s, I've had random engine warnings, back brake locking, won't idle sometimes. Just got to push Ducati, get it fixed. I keep mine constantly in the higher rev range at all times.
got my 1200 septemper 2014. i stalled three times, always when downshifting harder than normal. this has been a common problem with the 1200s from the beginning. if you check the forums, they say it's due to fuel mapping issues, especially in california with their high epa standards. i have not come across any relaible answer for this, not a different exhaust or any software update . . . for some reason, i have not stalled in almost a year (it's a second bike with about 5000 miles). i have had no other issues with the bike. it sounds like your bike was not assembled well.
I own 1998 Monster 900 and it's a great bike. Ducati made great bikes until 2004, then they lose some grip, then after few years they comeback with some good models as Panigale BUT with new generation they installed to much electronics and that the main issue of any bike. At the moment I heard about Hyper and Monster that they still have this issue. So, I love old Ducati and i advise to get a classic icons, newest never means Good.
I have a '98 M900, and it runs very well. I did have a similar issue almost 20 years ago - with the engine just stopping after I'd put on 500 miles with no problem at all. I was heading home in 95 degree heat, in the fast lane, and it literally just stopped. I pushed it a mile, with cars screaming past at 70 mph. I put the keys back in, and it started. I got 20 mins down the road, and same thing. Pull in the clutch, take out the keys, put them back in and restarted. Ducati said "Oh yeah, that happens a lot! We fix that all the time" ...and it never happened again.
That's an interesting, but scary story. I think I can put up with it, when manufacturer admits that there is a problem. In my case, they wouldn't even admit it! They acted like I have done something wrong.
rich l Never happen to me but for what I know that issue you had you was able to fix by your self because on M900 the electic system is so basic that is a joke...lol...
sounds like you have a lemon (stressed) wiring loom to me, it happens even with Japanese bikes. The only fix is to replace the whole wiring harness as the exact stress point in the loom is too hard to trace. Also with twin cylinder bikes they will rattle themselves apart as it the nature of the beast (bigger the engine the worse it is). With my twins I usually spend a day when I get a new bike pulling all the bolts off and using locktight on them.
That's exactly why I had doubts when I tried to decide Ducati Scrambler or a Yamaha XSR 900. They are almost the same price range. But I'm just not quite so sure about the reliability of the Ducati. Yamaha on the other hand, I have faith on their quality. I owned 2 generations of Tmax before. Both travelled with me on some fantastic Europe road trips across France, Switzerland and Italy, and they never ever broke down, not even once. Ducati does have great looking bikes, but quality and reliability matter.
Wow reading through all these comments some people can relate, others say same bike 10k no issues. From my experience my 2016 m1200s is pretty reliable with 25 k miles. I commute and tour the bike from San Francisco to LA every weekend to see family. My bike has had no issues what so ever. Maintenance is done by my dealer and it's don't at it's recommended time. I owned a 2014 Suzuki gxsr 600 cc and my gaskets blew in hot Cali weather (101 degrees). All I can say is fine a good Ducati dealer that has good reviews. Ducati has a reputation of breaking down but my m1200s says the contrary. At the end of the day buy what you like and heart wants.
I glad to read that. That is the thing, I obviously liked the brand, that's why I bought the bike. My intentions at no point were to trash the brand. I stayed focused on the subject, service from dealer and a response from Ducati's corporate office, in Cupertino. You can buy any brand bike and you might have assembly problems or whatever, but what makes the difference is how company treats you, when you run into problems. In my experience, that's been pretty negative.
sorry to hear you're having these troubles but you're not alone. ducati has some serious issues that they're in denial about. I had a 2008 848 that would cut out for a split second resulting in harsh engine braking. it would do this while accelerating!! the dealership basically said they couldn't do anything since it wasn't throwing a check engine light. I'm sure you've heard of all snowcats issues with his bikes too!!
I had a 2010 M1100 from new and put 20000 miles on her touring all over Europe. Had problems in the beginning with engine randomly cutting out and also accelerating on it's own whilst approaching roundabouts off the throttle (not hilarious). Took 6 months, 4000 miles and countless visits to the service workshop to find the problem and I was on the verge of giving it back as unfit/unsafe to ride. turned out to be the Ducati factory alarm fucking with the injectors. after that the only problem I had was sidestand bolts vibrating loose while touring round Spain which left me stuck in the saddle for a day until we could find an allen key large enough to tighten them up. I rode it rain or shine in UK weather so pretty testing for any bikes reliability. Owned by Audi now and had the head of Audi QC working there for the last 10 years so thing have improved massively. Ducati really aren't that unreliable anymore if stock. Paint thickness is my biggest gripe with them now (not owned any superbikes though). My mates fireblade had way more electrical problems than my Ducati. If you have an alarm ditch it. costs £350 fitted, save £30pa on insurance. More than 10 years to be worth it and just something extra to go wrong (which it will). Hope this helps although I'm an oldschool carbie fan for exactly this reason.
How the fuck does an expensive bike manufactuer such as Ducati have such terrible design specifications for new motorcycles? It's not the first or last I've heard of Ducati's bikes being unreliable. It's such a shame because they are such amazing looking bikes. They really need to improve their quality.
Can you make a video reflecting how to fix a stuck brake light, my rear brake connection keeps the brake light on constantly, I have to disconnect it to ride with a brake light.
I have 2000 monster 750 air cooled and a 2014 monster 1200. They require some skills to operate them right. Initially, they can be a pain, but if you learn how to feel them, they will never let you down. I have never had any issues with either one of them.
I am having the same shut off issue with my 2015 Monster 821. Bike shuts off while I'm down shifting and I am unaware. When I release the clutch and don't know the bike is off it starts skidding. Took it in for a software update. Still having the issue. Go down a hill pull in clutch bike shuts off... Very scary.... Would love to hear your progress from your dealer. I'll be bringing mine back soon.... I was worried buying a Ducati hearing all the problems, now I'm right in the middle of it.... Please keep us posted on your progress... Thanks for the video... Did the software update fix the shut off issue? Mine didn't....
First, thank you for sharing your experience. Well, after the software updates, the number of engine stalls didn't change, it kept on happening. But, after the first service, stalls almost went away ( I think it only happened twice after the first service). Up to this date, if the engine is warm (85 - 95 deg C), if I shut off the bike and try to turn it back on, it might not! As for 821, I have heard that the electronic throttle can become faulty, if water or moisture finds its way inside the throttle. It appears the voltage can't be read correctly by the computer, therefore engine ends up shutting off. To be honest, I thought I had the same issue, because when engine was about to shut off, it didn't matter if I gave it gas or not, revs would just drop and engine would die. I felt exactly the same way as you, I like Ducati motorcycles, but I was always afraid of having problems with it, and there we go...
i had a 2014 monster 1200 and had that same issue, twice it stalled on me, i took the bike to the dealer, they told me that it was a common issue, and gas controle at the throttle handle was malfunctioning, so they ordered a unit and changed it in a few days and that never happened to me again, at no cost. so that is all down to the fuckhead dealer of yours, love this bike super fun to ride. and dont listen all those idiots who tell you to change the brand, they are just envy that they cant afford one.
I disagree , knowing how things work in Italy , I can abolutely say that they are overpriced rubbish . The bikes are actually very cheap , poorely made , but the high price comes from the high taxes the companies have to pay over there .The bikes looks good and powerful indeed , but that's about the only positive thing they have.
Thank u for making me feel better about not getting a ducati. I hate dealerships that try to sell u stuff, but don't provide any service. I will walk away, find better deal.
15 monster 821 stripe, the exhaust cover that prevents your shoe from melting, screws unloosened themselves and the cover was hanging on one screw and melted my shoe
I find it funny on how some people that are passionate about a brand try to excuse such problems as normal and acceptable. It's not acceptable. One can't go wrong with Japanese bikes, history speaks for itself. European bikes are desirable but for me...something that works as supposed to is more relevant than something that looks good. Your dealer does not seem very good either.
Dude take it back and go and see a lawyer. Man if that was me I would be demanding the bike be fully fixed or a new bike or even get your money back. Sorry to see you are having so many issues.
So I had a 2009 Monster 1100. Purchased in Los Angeles. Day one, I could not take the Monster home because it would not start. Said it was fuel injection, and the problem was fixed. During that year, I took the bike into the shop 8 times. I even had my friends best friend/west coast ducati regional manager, fly down from SF to personally look at my bike. It kept shutting off in the down shift from 4th gear to 3rd gear. Said it was fine and the main wiring harness was pinched between the frame and gas tank. They are lemon's. It was never solved and I sold it. Get rid of it. Waste of money. I'm now looking into the latest FZ-10. Give that a look.
Two Part Statement, NEED HELP! The only time my 821 has ever shut off after revving has been with a cold engine, when the temp gauge reads low. Now, I let my bike warm up until it displays a temp (usually 126) and I have no issues. My only issue so far is that my rear brake actuator is locked up and my braking light stays on. I have no idea how to find and fix this issue. Any Help?
Well, engine shouldn't shut off because of it being cold. Unless, your bike is brand new and you haven't gone through brake in process. This is what I thought about my bike at first, I thought it was because of it being cold, until it started acting up even when engine was warm! About brakes, so far I haven't had any problem, I don't want to make suggestions without knowing the physical facts and evidence. Also, now I have a new issue. I have realized that majority of Allen screws easily strip. My friend Also had the same problem, so be careful if you are dealing with Allen screws on the bike.
I have the same bike but a 2016, already have a little over 2k miles, no problems yet. I think the dealerships when they get bikes in their shop they have to assemble it, they might have done a crappy job. I've been riding Ducati for about 6 years 5 different bikes all except one bike was causing problems. It was my first bike which was a 2006 749s, it kept shutting off in neutral. It just needed to get serviced. Keep the bike and fix it as time goes along, obviously they didn't use lock tight.
Having owned 3 ducatis until now (Monster 1100evo, 848 evo SE, diavel carbon red)... I would say that the most important is to get your bike maintained by a knowledgeable and decent dealer... I never had any issue on any of the bikes... except a minor software update that was needed on the monster... That said I'm riding a maximum of 3000miles/year...
In the end, are you certain that the engine shutting off is really just a software thing? Or do you call it a software thing because the dealers called it that? Did your friend have similar issues on his Monster?
Good questions, no, my friend didn't experience the engine shut off. And yes, I considered it software, because dealer told me that, I never trusted them. When I explain the situation to the dealer guys, they acted like they had never heard of such thing! Overall, the engine shut off (after software update) happened one other time, so we can say that software update has partially fixed the issue...
Wow, it sounds like your dealer sucks. I can't believe they won't make things right as far as the exhaust and passenger pegs. They are amazing machines, I wish they lived up to their "premium brand" marketing. Thankfully my Hypermotard has been trouble free so far.
Well, the bike is a twin, so it will naturally vibrate. The only thing I would really want to check is to make sure service has been done on time and spark plugs are clean.
The shut down that you experienced was it on the cell when you pull the clutch? I’m having the same issue hopefully Ducati will honor since I have a master tickeit open with them
man ... what a run of bad bad luck .... I was looking at the monster 821 but I think your video just put me off !!!! I would expect 1 or 2 issues with a new bike but not that many .... Ducati is expensive to start with so you are entitled to expect quality.... I am going for the Yamaha MT09 ! thanks
You really should go to another dealer because they are screwing you over, but the problems with your having with your bike are very easy to solve, most are caused by one part on the bike. There is no wiring problem nothing at all, the reason the bike turns off or you can't turn it on after after turning it off right away. If you remove your charcoal canister all those issues will stop. Every Ducati is not really designed to have this part, its only on the North American version because of stupid Cali laws. It causes issues with a lot of bikes one is not being able to start the bike right after you turn the bike off when its hot. The way Ducati did it on the Monster 1200 it has a constant vacuum being pulled on it, there is no purge valve, this can cause the bike to shut off when riding and not being able to turn the bike on when its hot because its getting too much air. If you take that thing off your problem will go away. You just unbolt it, unplug the 2 hoses and plug up the one hose that goes to the throttle body. It takes about 5 minutes. If you take that off your biggest problems with stop with the bike.
Did you have the dealer remove the charcoal EVAP canister? That is what plagues the hard starts and stalling. HAVE THEM REMOVE IT. My Monster 1100 did the same thing until they removed it. When I took delivery of my 899 I wouldn't leave the dealer until it was off. No issues...not even one!
TRUST ME. Take that POS charcoal eval canister off. The dealer will take off and plug the ends. If they refuse then do a forum search for a how-to. This solves stalling and the hard starts. It's not needed and fucks the bike up bad.
do have any problems with the clutch slave cause i had problem with it and I have to change it luckily with warranty. However i still pay for the towing.
Oh I forgot!! 4. leaking oil, all over the engine bottom right side, brought the bike twice. First time, "oh it was the oil filter". 2 days later, back to Ducati, " the bearing connected to the belt/engine was defective". IS THAT COOL RIDING WITH OIL DRIPPING ON YOUR BACK TIRE??... I know it, I should have got the R1200R.
i just simply love with the look of this model..very sexy🚵 n m thinking to buy a monster Ducati 821 2k18. would u suggest me your view on this.,is that be cool to go with that or completely denied. your suggestion ll be appreciated thanks
It really depends on you. If you are a new rider and want to enjoy quick acceleration and cruising, yes. But, if you are an experienced rider and want top-end power, I won't suggest 821. Overall, the service intervals are pretty good on M1200, small services at 9000 miles and major services at 18000 miles.
+jitterball thanku for ur info dear.,I'm from India I'm a new Rider..just desperate about the structure of this one.,n I'm a bit worried about the problems u have posted earlier.

Sounds like the dealer's service department does not really back their bikes or pdi them. the dealer here in Chicago is very active and has loyal customers all around supporting many different clubs here
Engine shut kff can be fixed with a remap... Speak to a good dealership.. As for the rest... Simple.. Swap the slip on out for another can, get the termi up map and solve 2 problems in 1 go... Signals are ugly anyway they're doing you a favour by jumping ship, and get a set of Oberon touring pegs if your ducati pegs are getting on your nerves.. My Triumph has shed more parts and and had bigger issues that your monster with half the mileage. (2015 street triple R, sidestand fell off, horn fell off, lost both fork pinch bolts holding the Axel in on the M1, complete brake rebuild 3000miles, camchain tensioner failure, ECU failure followed by a dashboard and fuel rail failure and the dealership tried to tell.me there was nothing wrong with it and that it's character.)
Thats ridiculous for the amount of money you paid Ducatti. I have heard some good things and lots of bad things about these bikes. My friend got one and he said he would never go to that dealer again. Your dealer sounds like a total idiot and rip off artist. I have had 5 bikes. All Japanese and never had any problem with any of them. Honda, Suzuki, and Kawasaki. Cheaper, better dealer network, and more reliable.
The engine on my new 2013 Diavel heated up all the way to red line in slow traffic. Nothing could be done to fix it. I suggested to have the bike shipped at my cost back to ITALY to see if someone there could find a solution. Their customer service and the CEO of Ducati finally wrote to me and basically told me in ,so many words to, “go to hell”. So yes, Ducati denies the problems that requires a costly fix. At just 8200 miles on the clock, the bike was sold at 40% of its original cost to one of the young people who worked for the dealership. And yes, he was aware of the problem.
These are the things that bother. Yes, my dealer is crap, but even when I called the HQ, here in Cupertino (Ducati North America Inc), their response was rather passive! So, I totally feel you on that.
I would never buy a Ducati , Aprilia , Fiat or other Italian shit . After owning a Fiat , Lancia , Alfa Romeo , and an Aprilia , and all of them broke down so often was unbelievable .One other thing , the Ducati or Aprilia bikes are not expensive cause they are superior to other bikes , but because the pay so much tax in Italy so that reflects in the price of the bike . I know this cause I used to live in Italy .If you like to buy something Italian that is good quality stick to the clothing , shoes and food .
That's why I got an Aprilia. It was between the Dorsoduro and the Hypermotard and after seeing Snowcats issues I went with the Aprilia. I also got $2500 off because it was a leftover but the 2015 is the same bike as the 2014 so it didn't matter. Haven't had a single problem in 8000 miles
I have a brand new Monster 821 having the same bs issue of stalling and going into limp mode when pulling in the clutch. F'n dealer kept saying they couldn't replicate the issue, but when I show up to take it home it stalled in less than 0.2 miles! The bike's been in the shop 2 of the 4 months I've owned it. F Ducati!!!
I own a monster. Love it. That bike would obviously go back to the dealer and if it wasn’t fixed right I would call Ducati of America again and if all problems weren’t fixed I would file a lemon lawsuit. You’ve got patients my friend. I wouldn’t put up with that bull shit. Did u try another dealership? This sounds like a nightmare. Your bike shutting off sounds like a kick stand problem. I would be interested to hear if you got the problems addressed.
maan...I feel for you...must be very unlucky...I got my 696 brand new 6 years ago and had no probs so far!...looking into the new 821 but that video made me think twice now...Audi bought ducati and may be brought on too many changes....I mean uv had a lot of issues with urs!!!
I think what the italian industry needs are more electrical engineers and programmers. And maybe less designers. Maybe it worked in the 70's to have some mechanical engineers building an engine and designers drawing the body. Don't cut manhours in the software and electrical teams. Also you need more beta-testing on the road and quality checks in the factory. Americans don't care that much about design, they just want a reliable bike for a cheap price and thats what the japanese do.
About the design you said about the Japanese, Yamaha seems to be the only manufacturer that ruined a bit the design of their Super Sport bikes, but their Hyper Naked bikes got prettier.
Same thing happen to my 2014 monster 1200s i brougth it to the dealer many times and dont they dont wanna change the bike coz its barely 1200 milles but the problem happens in the first 500 miles and again happens once in a while and i end up filing a lemon law suit and after how many months they finally refund my money back but i lost a thousand dollars less because the law firm said thats how it goes
Right now, I'm at 13000 miles and I had one shut off when I had just started the bike and tried to rev a little bit (cold engine). So, the answer is once, after so many thousand miles.
got a ducati monster 1100 evo touch wood no problems at all but I did get a belt change done and the first ride kaboom timing belt failure! the idiots never fitted it right in the garage for 2 months I get it back with the engine rebuilt all good for now
Check your stand safety switch or handle bar safety switch or the wirings of it. I did soldered mine. when a bolt on my stand fell off and the bike almost fell on my foot when i tried engaging the stand and broke the chip on the safety switch on the stand end. i didnt know it yet that time because the bike is still running i guess the wire or the chip still got a lil bit of connection. Then My trip got haulted one day when i discovered that chip on the wiring complety broke. Luckily there is an LTE service where i am and google how tos and i cut the wirings and bypass the safety switch temporarily just enough to get me home. And about parts/screws falling off thats kind of an owners responsibility. Ducati vibrates so much that ive replace alot of bolts. Its up to you to prevent it. Trying using loctite on parts that you dont remove often/important or safety wiring it. But to be honest your dealership sucks cant argue with that. Oh and dont buy bolts from ducati. It is expensive as fuck atleast where im from.
Mine does it too! It's not so bad with me... it happens to me when I down shift and blip the throttle before releasing the clutch. Hasn't happened too much anymore though. Also I have trouble starting mine with the fuel tank is low, sometime the low fuel light isn't even on and it wont start.
Damn dude you got a lemon, sorry dude. Same bike as my buddy, but a S model, no problem. Of course it gets super hot, it's a vtwin. But, it start a few sec later. How's the bike now?
Ducati needs a few class action law suits to force them to fix their quality issues. Great bikes but when you start running into problems good luck. Seems they can't the electronics right, and the dealers don't have the skills to diagnose and fix them. I'm actually thinking to switch brands my self even though i love Ducati so much.
My friend has a ducati monster 1200. The engine exploded on him. Like literally. Just had 3000miles on it. Blew the piston. Engine block. Head and all of the valve.
Shuting off mid ride is dangerous i feel for you man ducati need to sort this out crazy Check the rectifier If you buy ducati things will shake and loosen buy good set of tools
Welcome to the world of Ducati exotica. My 01, 748 has the same headlight issue but I only day ride it so it's a mute point for me. I ride one of my other bikes at night. Trusting your bike is really important and I'd rather walk than own any bike that turns off at speed. No bike is worth that kind of risk to your personal safety. Sorry you are getting the run around at the dealership. They don't deserve your business or loyalty.
Lol dude these issues are minor and are caused by vibrations lol they aren't a big deal. Some 5.00 blue loctite and a weekend will solve most of these issues. The stalling sounds like fuel starvation which isnt a big deal just takes some time to diagnose if its due to vapor lock, bad fuel pump. Bad throttle position sensor or something else. I highly doubt its a programming issue. That said the response from, the dealership is bullshit... They need to get off their ass and fix it. These aren't hard issues to take care of.
I agree 100% Beautiful motorcycles but a lot of trouble with a new motorcycle. I had two 899s and finally moved on after a crash to a BMW S1000RR. Good luck I will not buy another Ducati.
Always wanted one .beautiful machines with such a heritage
but even now under Audi ownership theres still some glaring issues.
The dealer is called Motor Cafe, here in the Bay Area (Sunnyvale). Yes, make sure to avoid any bad dealer.
Thats gonna keep happening in afraid
All the issues were with the valvetrain and associated parts! dvt etc
How does a buy back program work? Are you losing any money from all this?

Most unreliable Ducati
Shame on Ducati to launch such a product in 🇮🇳 India without any R&D.
Navroze contractor...Hi I am considering the 797 monster....would recommend against it ?
REMOVE THE CHARCOAL CANISTER: Thats what's causing the engine running and starting issues.
I'm having the same issue .. what is the charcoal canister?
How’s the bike holding up? Any problems afterwards?
The vapor lock is caused by the charcoal canister that is required for California CARB. Remove it and you'll not have the vapor lock problem.
+CretePete, canister is gone, on all my Ducs right after buying the bike...
This is fucking unacceptable from a hi end expensive bike !!!
Thank you:)
Duc Boy do u know any thing about a 1198?
Bobby King I can't agree more with you. The 1998 M900 is an awesome bike btw.
They acted like I have done something wrong.
rich l
Never happen to me but for what I know that issue you had you was able to fix by your self because on M900 the electic system is so basic that is a joke...lol...
sounds like you have a lemon (stressed) wiring loom to me, it happens even with Japanese bikes.
I live in the Bay area too, what dealer do you go to? I have a 2018 M821, stalled 4 times with under 400 miles
sorry to hear you're having these troubles but you're not alone. ducati has some serious issues that they're in denial about.
I feel you, my Hypermotard has been plagued with issues and as of this writing, still in the dealership for repairs.
i had a 2014 monster 1200 and had that same issue, twice it stalled on me, i took the bike to the dealer, they told me that it was a common issue, and gas controle at the throttle handle was malfunctioning, so they ordered a unit and changed it in a few days and that never happened to me again, at no cost. so that is all down to the fuckhead dealer of yours, love this bike super fun to ride. and dont listen all those idiots who tell you to change the brand, they are just envy that they cant afford one.
What was the unit ??!!
Sergey Absolute what was the unit they changed ! I think i have the same problem !
Thank u for making me feel better about not getting a ducati. I hate dealerships that try to sell u stuff, but don't provide any service. I will walk away, find better deal.
6:33 Can't you just tighten up the bolt ? It probably got a bit loose due to the vibrations.
No, unfortunately it's like rivet, can't make it tight or loose.
15 monster 821 stripe, the exhaust cover that prevents your shoe from melting, screws unloosened themselves and the cover was hanging on one screw and melted my shoe
I've had similar experience.
What have YOU done to stop it from cutting out?
Unless, your
bike is brand new and you haven't gone through brake in process. This is
what I thought about my bike at first, I thought it was because of it
being cold, until it started acting up even when engine was warm! About
brakes, so far I haven't had any problem, I don't want to make
suggestions without knowing the physical facts and evidence. Also, now I
have a new issue. I have realized that majority of Allen screws easily
strip. My friend Also had the same problem, so be careful if you are
dealing with Allen screws on the bike.
Lucky my Panigale has slipper clutch i didn't lock up the rear wheel.
Wow, it sounds like your dealer sucks. I can't believe they won't make things right as far as the exhaust and passenger pegs. They are amazing machines, I wish they lived up to their "premium brand" marketing. Thankfully my Hypermotard has been trouble free so far.
can I ask about the vibration? mine vibes almost making it difficult to ride due to it at 70mph plus?? whole bike vibing
Well, the bike is a twin, so it will naturally vibrate. The only thing I would really want to check is to make sure service has been done on time and spark plugs are clean.
The shut down that you experienced was it on the cell when you pull the clutch? I’m having the same issue hopefully Ducati will honor since I have a master tickeit open with them
The shut down would happen when you are riding at random speeds, so clutch was not involved. Issue was resolved after a software update.
man ... what a run of bad bad luck .... I was looking at the monster 821 but I think your video just put me off !!!! I would expect 1 or 2 issues with a new bike but not that many .... Ducati is expensive to start with so you are entitled to expect quality.... I am going for the Yamaha MT09 ! thanks
My 821 never has given me an issues. 9700 miles
Love my bike.
Thank you for the the tip, I'll look into the detail of that.
once again the government always ruins everything
Wow you dont want to live on a clean planet? Why do you hate the Earth?
Shut up idiot.
@@AmRFuKYaH But then $18.000 would be wasted for nothing, because of the continuous problems.
Wow, what a horror story. Not one single person that makes the commitment to a Ducati should go through this! ...disgusting ...unacceptable.
As of now, the problem isn't there anymore, but I might do that as a project in the future. I still have to add mods and everything.
TRUST ME. Take that POS charcoal eval canister off. The dealer will take off and plug the ends. If they refuse then do a forum search for a how-to. This solves stalling and the hard starts. It's not needed and fucks the bike up bad.
Welcome to ducati my friend, some days i love them, some days i want to drop gas on them and light up the fire.
never do service contract unless they have full spare ex stock reserved exclusive.
Thanks for this vid, sorry about it all. Did you get rid of it?
You're welcome. No, I still ride the bike, the problem seem to be gone for about a year.
do have any problems with the clutch slave cause i had problem with it and I have to change it luckily with warranty. However i still pay for the towing.
No, never had any issues with clutch cylinder.
I know it, I should have got the R1200R.
i just simply love with the look of this model..very sexy🚵
n m thinking to buy a monster Ducati 821 2k18.
would u suggest me your view on this.,is that be cool to go with that or completely denied.
your suggestion ll be appreciated
thanks
It really depends on you. If you are a new rider and want to enjoy quick acceleration and cruising, yes. But, if you are an experienced rider and want top-end power, I won't suggest 821. Overall, the service intervals are pretty good on M1200, small services at 9000 miles and major services at 18000 miles.
+jitterball thanku for ur info dear.,I'm from India I'm a new Rider..just desperate about the structure of this one.,n I'm a bit worried about the problems u have posted earlier.
+jitterball thanku for ur info dear.,I'm from India I'm a new Rider..just desperate about the structure of this one.,n I'm a bit worried about the problems u have posted earlier.
I got a 1100 Evo, top bike, best Monster produced imo.
Thanks for sharing mate
Thats ridiculous for the amount of money you paid Ducatti. I have heard some good things and lots of bad things about these bikes. My friend got one and he said he would never go to that dealer again. Your dealer sounds like a total idiot and rip off artist. I have had 5 bikes. All Japanese and never had any problem with any of them. Honda, Suzuki, and Kawasaki. Cheaper, better dealer network, and more reliable.
Got a 2013 1100 evo and 2013 796... both air cooled.. both awesome. The new water cooled monsters? Dunno.
I know this cause I used to live in Italy .If you like to buy something Italian that is good quality stick to the clothing , shoes and food .
hahahahahah yeah you got it right...:)
Another thing is they wouldn't budge on the Ducati price
Jon R ...had my 'ape Mille R Haga for 12+ yrs with negligible issues really. So not all Italian bike manufacturers are sub par
Jon R
Both my 2016 and 2017 Ducati Panigale 1299 had the same problems as your bike.
F Ducati!!!
Well, in my case, after the first service it got better. Though, it just happened once the other day, as soon as I started the bike.
I´ve not had any of your problems, not a problem even once, Monster 1200 -2015, 5600km. Termignoni with mapkey.
Do you still have some issues with your Ducati Monster??
Right now, I'm at 13000 miles and I had one shut off when I had just started the bike and tried to rev a little bit (cold engine). So, the answer is once, after so many thousand miles.
Thanks!
got a ducati monster 1100 evo touch wood no problems at all but I did get a belt change done and the first ride kaboom timing belt failure! the idiots never fitted it right in the garage for 2 months I get it back with the engine rebuilt all good for now
Check your stand safety switch or handle bar safety switch or the wirings of it.
How's the bike now?
i have exactly the same bike, now i have 10K kilometers , but hadnt experienced any problem with it
Currently having this problem with my 2015 Ducati 899. Shit is crazy, rear looks up and engine shuts off
I was able to resolve the issue by updating the software. Go to the dealer, check out and see when was the software updated last.
Exactly ducati experiences ,848 evolution here same problems
Ducati needs a few class action law suits to force them to fix their quality issues. Great bikes but when you start running into problems good luck. Seems they can't the electronics right, and the dealers don't have the skills to diagnose and fix them. I'm actually thinking to switch brands my self even though i love Ducati so much.
this video u made using a gopro?
No, actually it is Nikon D800. I do use GoPro while riding, though.
+jitterball nice
My friend has a ducati monster 1200. The engine exploded on him. Like literally. Just had 3000miles on it. Blew the piston. Engine block. Head and all of the valve.
if you are in the US then use the lemon law to get you a new bike
Shuting off mid ride is dangerous i feel for you man ducati need to sort this out crazy
Check the rectifier
If you buy ducati things will shake and loosen buy good set of tools
Welcome to the world of Ducati exotica. My 01, 748 has the same headlight issue but I only day ride it so it's a mute point for me. I ride one of my other bikes at night. Trusting your bike is really important and I'd rather walk than own any bike that turns off at speed. No bike is worth that kind of risk to your personal safety. Sorry you are getting the run around at the dealership. They don't deserve your business or loyalty.
'Get a Japanese bike if you wanna be riding and NOT fixing' ~ CycleCruza
Good one
Thank you! Was planning to buy this bike. Will stick to Japanese.
I have a Ducati for more then a year and had no problem. You have bad luck. All brands have problem!!
I agree 100% Beautiful motorcycles but a lot of trouble with a new motorcycle. I had two 899s and finally moved on after a crash to a BMW S1000RR. Good luck I will not buy another Ducati.
