Really, this is the way this piece should be played. I've waited a long time to hear it finally performed as it ought to be. The intensity of the performance captures all the bravura of the neo-baroque that it is supposed to be rather than a 20th century porridge! Every line made sense, thanks to the conductor's clear direction. Virtuoso playing too - especially the pianist who, I see, went on to win 1st Prize in the Khachaturian competition in 2019. The sound balance was also superb, with the piano obbligato not background but big in the mix. Just well done and thank you for bringing this piece to life at last!
Played this in high school orchestra back in the 80s & remember it being the most fun piece, just whaling on my viola on those beginning notes. Thanks for posting... brings back good memories!
My high school orchestra played this for our nationals in 2007, we played at Staten Island College and took first. I loved playing this opening on my viola as well. Sixty seven kids flew from Salt Lake City UT to Elizabeth NJ for the competition and I remember being so exhausted after the performance was over. But the minute we finished the last note of the last song we were all grinning from ear to ear because we sounded amazing.
wow im playing this right now, freshmen year of high school, and as a violist, hearing such high regards to a song from other violists just makes me eager to learn the full song and play with my orchestra.
I was the pianist for the 1st movement for my high school orchestra. We won 1st place in competition. Hardest piece I've ever played, I still get anxious just hearing the song haha
