But a guy that just got his has rust right away? Does that make any sense? Or could it possibly just be rail dust during transport, which can easily be cleaned off

Sure, but it's kind of strange that
      A) apparently all Cybertrucks owners live in areas where raildust is a problem
      and
      B) apparently raildust is a very common problem that nobody knows about.
No, it's rust. Bare stainless *will* rust when left out in the elements. This it not news to anyone in the car business, the Delorean had the same problem and it is _the_ main reason why there are no other manufacturers who sell cars with *any* bare metal on them. (it's not hard to make, its just a really really bad idea because of the rust)

I knew this wouldn’t work the minute I found out it wasn’t coated. I’ve been in the metal fabrication business for all most 40 years. Most recently I’ve been working on stainless steel for the bio pharmaceutical industry. This industry uses a ton of different salt buffers that will destroy 316L SS. Without going into great detail, Chromium is what gives SS its resistance to rust. Well guess what chromium doesn’t do well with? Salt and sodium hypochlorite (bleach). In addition, all machines used to produce and fabricate SS must be kept separate and free of contamination from carbon steels. I.E. grinding wheels and buffing wheels. Also I have no idea what grade of SS this is but 304 will rust when exposed to the elements even if the afore mentioned compounds aren’t present. This strikes me as another ego driven bad idea and I’m sure electric Jesus didn’t bother to talk with a metallurgist.

Looks like contamination to me. Maybe from rolling or polishing. Easy to make happening if for example using steel wire disc on stainless steel.
This don't need much more than tiny particles from non stainless steel.
I have used lots of different stainless steels on difficult conditions. Brushed finish can easily look dirty or get uneven coloring but stainless don't rust without strong chemicals.

  • @parksperf1

There are many grades of stainless steel. And, even though we all think how stainless almost looks like chrome, its not. When you look at the word, that IS just what you get "Stain" "Less." If you really want to see all types of stainless, just look at the "Marine" industry. (Boats) The top side (above the water) will be a completely different grade of stainless than the bottom side. (Stainless steel Propellers and Impellers) Remember when we were kids in grade school? And, the teacher in Science class would bring out a magnet, and say: "Children, watch this. A magnet will Not stick to this piece of Stainless steel, but watch how it grabs these Nails!" Yea, I remember that, all too well. Now, fast forward 25 years, I am making stainless steel impellers for personal watercraft (jet skis). At first these jet skis had small engines about 35 to 50 horse power. They were aluminum. You could only thin the aluminum so much, then it cracked and the blade came off. So, stainless came in. Many times stronger, real thin blades, the skis went faster. I can't remember the grade of stainless we used but, the Magnet Wouldn't stick to it. It was real shiny, didn't stain, rust, they worked good. All was good for 10 years or so. Then, another manufacture came out with more horsepower. We tore into the pump and we see that this new company had pretty much the same impeller as we have been selling in the other brand. This new company came through from the factory with an aluminum impeller. So, our thin bladed stainless steel impeller worked real good, and it went real fast, with it. All was good, again. OR, so we thought. Two or three months later, we were getting stainless impellers back with the blades bent on them. Some cracked. We had hundreds, almost a full thousand that made us "all to Not get any Sleep." So, we went up the scale in stainless. I remember the grade we went with to gain the strength back. (Here's were things change) The stronger grade stainless WILL rust! It has more Iron in it. And, Yes, a Magnet WILL stick to it. Plus, the more bends you put in the stainless, it changes the molecules in it. It "Work-hardens" it. Too much or too many and it becomes brittle and Cracks. I'm pretty sure that stainless has 11% or more chromium in it to make it (Remember) "Stain" Less." (It Still Stains, Just Less) lol. If you go back and read the problems of the Delorian. The stains in the "Stainless steel sheet metal" were so bad, Delorian almost had them all painted. Elon Musk is a genius! BUT, he is also Very young. lol (You got to live through some things) Grinding on stainless, it will rust where you grind. (heat) (work harden)

I used metal polish on rims that I bought from a salvage yard to remove years of brake dust and oxidation. When it comes to polishing paint the experts recommend trying different techniques or materials in a hidden or less visible area (bottom edge of truck) until you figure out what works. If you buy stainless steel appliances, it is hard to keep them clean and prevent fingerprint marks. Sharkhide Metal Protectant will help keep your metal looking like new. Providing protection against stains, oxidation, acid-rain, weathering, salt spray, and pitting. Apply a couple of good coats and enjoy years of protection, along with ease of cleanup.

The way rust works is that if you saw ACTUAL rust - then it's there.. it's effectively a permanent pit. It will come back and grow.
You could possibly microscopically scale the rusted pit margins away somehow and then fill it with electroplating, but that's NOT going to happen.

Each truck I've bought, since 2016, has been cleaned by the dealer BEFORE I took posession of it. The last two were build to order trucks that were CLEAN when I picked them up. If Tesla is not doing this before people pick up their vehicles, then that's on them.
As far as Tesla claiming to have 'cracked the code' for using stainless... IMO, that's BS. There's PLENTY of stainless alloys out there that are also good for both machining and forming. You simply have to pick the CORRECT ONE. A LOT of the alloys are also easier to form/machine in an annealed state. Corrosion resistance is typically enhanced after being heat treated and tempered.
Until Tesla actually publishes which alloy they're using. Or the composition of the alloy they're using, it's all just guesswork (at best).
Another item comes to mind (from my father)... There's stainless steel and then there's stains LESS steel. As in less than mild steel (or carbon steel).

Poor Elon, I have 316 stainless all over my boat that operates in saltwater for almost 30 years and don't have any corrosion... bow rails, cleats, pretty much the entire helm. Sounds like he doesn't know what the hell he's doing. Maybe NASA should be doing more inspections on those rockets. 🤷‍♂️

    • @wilmarbarrick3194
      @wilmarbarrick3194 7 місяців тому +1

Sure... First, the boat gets transported TO and FROM the ocean yearly. It does this on the same roads that cars do. Second, while stainless is nice, it's cost prohibitive to use it everywhere. That means other materials are used for things like dock hardware (usually galvanized steel). Galvanized is better regular steel but it still corrodes which means all your nice stainless is fastened inches away from slowly corroded steel. If you don't believe me go look at a local marina. Then there are the components that aren't stainless on the boat like the engine or anchor rode etc. I'm sure the list can be expanded but that's what pops to mind immediately. Sufficed to say, there's plenty of iron particles around a boat.

I can tell you never had a diesel Heavy Duty or Super Duty truck from Ford or GM. Honestly, even the RAMs will easily be around for 20 years with some maintenance. We are talking about trucks that were designed, engineered and built to run 400,000 miles and longer under maximum workload. Workload that is way beyond what Teslas would ever experience. For example, practically constantly pulling 20,000+ pounds of trailers for 400,000+ miles. Teslas are nowhere near at that build quality and longevity.

I don’t know if it’s debunked or not but considering that both Jalopnik and MotorTrend published articles about it Wednesday makes it pretty unlikely.
There is also Tesla’s official recommendation that every bird dropping or bug should be removed immediately with alcohol rub and then the spot soap washed. If the steel is that finicky then it doesn’t bode well for the future of the “stainless”-ness of the truck.
Seemingly when you buy a Cybertruck you don’t buy a vehicle, you are buying a life partner that requires you to pet and caress her every day after a ride. Gives a new meaning to high maintenance.
