  • What's in your barn? Hawkeye had you beat! Northern NY's biggest antique dealer and famously eccentric friend John W. "Hawkeye" Hawkinson quietly passed away at his home in Gabriels, NY on July 15, 2016. The following images show for the last time much of his delightful collection as he left it. Enjoy! -Josh (www.joshclementproductions.com)

Wow. His own personal Park and Hide. I can almost smell the old shop air and feel the paper as the new-vintage parts are unwrapped. Just Wow.

We are all merely stewards for the gifts we have, to pass on when the time is right to those that find new love and appreciation, to give a fresh life of joy and wonder.

I remember John and had the pleasure of knowing a bit about his life; we have sat and had a drink together on occasions. John told how he retrieved a sunken car out of Lake Champlain one time and I asked him would the car ever run? John said, yes, what happens is the oil floats to the top of the pistons and keeps them lubricated. I used to see John quite a bit driving his old cars, stopping at Don Neale's garage in Gabriels and various places around the area. John always wore an old sheepskin coat. John was a nice guy.

I spoke to him once and asked about the Packard he was driving, it was 1928 straight 6 that he had cut the back off of and made into a pick-up. He told me he had driven Packards all his life. I remember passing him driving that car down the road and always looked forward to catching a glimpse of him in it. So awesome to see some of the cars he owned especially after driving past his property so many times. A very unique man.I hope the new owners will treasure his cars. So happy to have found this video and thank you for sharing it.

My father bought that Packard, along with another, both yellow. Both sold and (unfortunately) I believe the museum that acquired it is turning it back into the original fire truck it started as. The other Packard went to India and I have no idea what happened with it...
My father (unfortunately) recently passed as well. I have a 1928 Buick speedster from Hawkeye. My father and he were good friends and I have very fond memories of visiting him.He took a photo of me with an old camera that had the exploding filament bulb, which I will never forget. Also, I remember him talking about how he only had two lightbulbs in his house, one in the kitchen and the other in the bedroom. God Bless him but I believe god broke the mold after him.

I went to Paul Smith's College from 2009-2012 and would see him often around town...going to Brighton mini mart to grab a breakfast sandwich on my way to ski whiteface. Never knew the guy, but was cool seeing his cars! Heart of gold leaving everything to be sold for donations.
