It's interesting how Meryl and Goldie each preferred a different ending.
*Goldie* preferred the original cut ending where Madeline and Helen remained beautiful but became bored and miserable, showing eternal youth isn't as glamourous as one may think.
*Meryl* preferred the theatrical ending where Madeline Helen ultimately destroyed their bodies, showing how deadly the sin of vanity really is.

Out of the 2 frenemies... Goldie's character is the one who truly finally learns the meaning of a full life in the original ending. Meryl's character still doesn't get it. So both Helen and Ernest got some sort of redemption in that original ending. In the final cut's ending this is gone...
I love the final cuts ending, but I freaking hate that so much other stuff has been cut because that 3rd act at the bar got removed.. the pacing feels so off.

@@XanArt21 Yeah, it was Goldie's character in the film, who suffers tragedy after tragedy, having her lovers repeatedly stolen by Madeline Ashton, suffering heartbreak over and over again. She had only a very brief moment of happiness when she finally got revenge on Madeline, only to have that also taken away when she realized Madeline had also taken the potion.
Death Becomes Her, really is a tragedy in many ways, these two women who strive for eternal youth and immortality, who ultimately find that the second that potion was drank, they became hollow husks of emptiness and superficiality. Life had no more meaning without death.

it is very possible she did not like the ending but was saying this to promote to movie. Her hesitation tells me she is trying to find diplomatic words to describe it. Goldie's interview was years after the movie was released. This was filmed before the movie was released.

eh, the problem for the original ending is that them living perhaps forever is not the problem, its their outlook that is the issue. "I have already been to NY" ok, but what about the NY of 100 years from now?

I think the original ending has many problems. It throws out the window several established thing in the movie, one being their bodies’ decay and how terrible they were at it, which was the reason they wanted Ernest so bad, in the way the characters were. Meryl could have said it better, the biggest flaw, its sin was trying to be moralistic.

Keep in mind there was a whole 3rd act resolve before this scene that was also removed.
Switzerland, 27 years later, Mad & Hel sit on a balcony of a beautiful hotel surrounded by mountains and lakes. They still look stunning... but are bored out of their brains. Mad sees an old couple preparing a picnic in the park and starts ridiculing them. Helen notices the couple too, then she looks at Madeline... then to herself... then she looks at them with longing. The couple have now settled on the grass with food and wine. The man reaches out to his wife and touches her hand with his... still young hand... It's Ernest and Toni, still very much in love, enjoying the afternoon sun. Mad & Hel keep staring at them... Madeline looking over her sunglasses... when the movie starts to fade out the eternal ladies' faces turn to skulls for a second.

@@XanArt21I thought the couple were old and he’s dying while mad & hel are both still young but bored and suggesting places to go and saying no to each place coz they’ve already been there dozens of times, then one looks at the old couple and says aren’t you glad we’re not old like them and the other says yes but is lying

I just want to see the original cut with Tracy Ullman, all the scenes that are in the original trailers, I want Lisle to tell Edgar she's "over 600 years old" instead of 72 or whatever it was. Is that cut ever going to be available?

Yes, she felt it spoke to the farce of vanity, especially Hollywood vanity to the nth degree. Goldie Hawn preferred the other ending where it was reflecting on the movies message life and humanity. The movie is about both and I think both ending work in their own way.

Looking back upon their lives and personalities both these actresses contrasting opinions of the two endings make sense and might be fully sincere.
Hawn was pushing 50 and desperately clinging to her age 22 look...still playing roles for a 20 something comedy actress in that whole decade.
She liked the ending where they stayed beautiful, but Helen (her character) reflected on a tad of regret showing growth.
Streep, also in her early 40s, who later didn't hide from her age understood how the published ending really stayed with the farce. ..two aging actors rotting from the inside, and their once revered plastic surgeon husband, now a mortician spray painting corpses.
Hits a bit too close to home for some in the business I guess.

@@Phirebirdphoenix find a plastic surgeon and keep him busy till he's really just a mortician spray painting your walking rotting corpse...seems easy. The potion cost Madeline $1million. That ought to cover the advice above.

Then you misunderstood Hawn's thoughts, because she didn't just like the ending because they were beautiful. You should rewatch her opinion and pay attention this time.

    • @STho205
      @STho205 Рік тому +5

@@MicukoFelton I did...she feigned depth, but she's an actress.. that's her job. She just liked the better part for herself in the scene as winning the story. In the published scene, Ern lives the good life and Streep got to stomp on Hawn's lines for the punch line with BLAH BLAH BLAH...then the movie ended with proper slapstick as it is a dark loonie toons violent style farce.
Actors are often rivals for the better lines. Cheers, age gracefully.
