Absolutely. He was the one who went to Jon and said let’s give this heavy riffy rock a try. And when he left after Stormbringer Jon said this hard rock was Ritchie’s so to speak from day one. I didn’t know if I wanted to do it without him. But then I met Tommy Bolin. And I felt reinvigorated.
@ I love that album and I miss Tommy! Glenn was asked in the early 80’s if when he thought about Tommy was it ever like he had just died. He looked like he was about to cry and said every time. 😢
Great album 💜 Stormbringer has some epic tracks… Highlights: 1. Stormbringer 2. The Gypsy 3. Lady Double Dealer 4. Soldier Of Fortune Thank You For The Music 🎼🎸
I prefer the David Coverdale era of Deep Purple. I am glad David reached out to Ritchie Blackmore and they are friends again. I saw an interview on Ritchies channel were he said Glenn and David are friends and wanted them in Rainbow (2016). Back to Stormbringer, Ritchie only wrote two songs as he was also going through a divorce. He did say he should have contributed more to Stormbringer. He did play great guitar on the album and when playing those songs live.
I think I'm right in saying that RB was going through a divorce at the time, so he was distracted and not so involved in writing... plus he also had Rainbow on his radar and was probably holding back ideas.
Blackmore's guitar work on Stormbringer is some of the best he did in his career and although he said, that he dislikes the funky style, he plays it absolutely soulful. And then you know it wasn't why he left the band ...
I read that Mr Blackmore wanted to record the song 'Black Sheep Of The Family' for the Stormbringer album but he was vetoed by the band, and that it was this that confirmed his departure from 'Purple', and that song's subsequent appearance on the first Rainbow LP.
I don't think that's the real reason why Blackmore left. He had pretty strong control on the musical direction and could easily change it if it were the main reason. One of the stories had to do with the ability to play covers, specifically Black sheep of the family, which he then did with RJD. He was more excited to play with different people than continue with the Mark 3 line up.
When Stormbringer was first released my friends and I were not impressed. For, me, at the time, Machine head was still the pinnacle. And I went off Deep Purple (although I liked Burn) until this year's album, which will make my Top 20. After this year's = I album, I went back into their catalogue and on streaming Stormbringer just a few months ago I think it is a tremendous album.
Slaves and Masters is by far and away the most underrated work Richie Blackmore has been involved in. It's a Deep Purple album that receives horrible verbal abuse, yet is an exemplary cut of 80s Metal, that unfortunately arrived late, in 1990. Slaves & Masters isn't progressive, but heavily hook oriented, and hooks it has, every tune
Blackmore had an urge for power, he always wanted to have control over the band, so he left the collegues he couldn't Control, picked up a totally unknown band The Elf, called it Rainbow and became an indisplicable authority in it. Very soon he pushed all the former Elves out, formed a pop band and their music contained more and more saccarin. The apogee of it was his duet with his wife Candis.
Ritchie Blackmore allegedly asked David Coverdale to join him in a new venture. David decided to stay in the Deep Purple fold.Ritchie had played David his new song ideas, but David couldn’t be convinced. Ronnie James Dio from ‘75-‘78 was a natural musical partner for Ritchie as history shows us. I saw an interview with Jimmy Bain, where he said he was in a car with Ritchie and was playing the Stormbringer tape. Ritchie took the cassette/8 track out the player and threw it out the window. I wish I could find that interview footage now!
Stormbringer is a "democratic" album for Deep Purple way of things. There's much of Glenn, beside much of David in this recorded. But there's too much of Jon, Paicey and Ritchie too. Unfortunatelly, Blackmore went out after the european tour (which late became Made in Europe), but I really think he was afraid about the way things were going. Listen to the albuns made by Black Sabbath (Sabotage), Led Zeppelin (Physical Graffiti) and Pink Floyd (Wish you Were Here), during 1975. All those great bands were looking for new sonorities in the pre-disco musico era. The same came to Deep Purple's mark IV only album, Come Taste the Band. That was a surviving question, and Ritchie was very worried about that. Rainbow came in 1975 trying to keep the hard rock line straight. After some years, when Graham Bonnet came to that band, Ritchie gave up and went into a comercial way (which, who knows, started with Stormbringer in 1974).
Stormbringer is a kick a$$ song but overall the album was just good. I am glad Ritchie changed direction and moved on to Rainbow. That group helped to move along the hard rock sound into heavy metal type songs, like "Kill the King". Of course we also got the epic song "Stargazer", one of the best songs ever recorded.
Hi John!!! Yeah i think this is a very good album, but as good as the previous Mark III studio album or the ones with Gillan..... the tittle track and "Soldier of Fortune" are two great songs, but you can tell that Ritchie was not happy with the direction the band was taking and thanks to that we got Rainbow with Dio and the rest is history. cheers and be well
Agree with your comments on this album, John. Stormbringer was the best 'rock' song by far, however it is an absolute travesty and beggars belief that 'soldier of fortune' wasn't released as a single. Coverdale's vocals are incredibly soulful, heartfelt and a little haunting at the same time........a largely unheralded 'tour de force' (without the force). A short sighted F...up by the band's management if ever there was one. Of course, Burn was a stunning album.......probably one of DP's best overall. IMHO the majority of Ritchie's best work was done with RJD (although some of the really early Deep purple live stuff on TV shows was pretty wild).
It’s been well documented many times. Glenn Hughes was coming into his own most of the album was a soulful funk rock as opposed to the funk being more subtle on Fireball and Burn and Ritchie hated it. He said that Fireball is not a favorite of his because he thinks they overthought it and put too much funk in the sound.
There are some real standout tracks on the album. All the songs are well written, whether Ritchie liked them or not. Soldier of Fortune is one of the coolest songs ever written
Glenn Hughes pushed for more influence at this point, along with David Coverdale, as they were no longer the new boys. Blackmore also had marriage issues with his Wife, Babs, and was obviously distracted, but his suggestions were also frequently disregarded. The album did sound a bit limp, but the live performances were typical Purple - giving it 110% off the scale musically.
though i really like coverdale, think objectively that mk2 had better songs, of a higher calibre. objectively . But, overall one of the best DP songs is you keep on moving , mk4. imo
I like Stormbringer. The A side may be a little too off from their root, but Side B is quite solid and hard rocking. Songs like Gypsy and the title track are more polished than Burn album. If RB had stayed withthe band, they would have made more real great albums
Yes that's true because I know the band didn't really do much after this. I know they had one more album after this with Mark Bolan. Then it wasn't until Perfect Strangers came out when they reunited.

Stupid take. Gillan s always been a one trick screamer, who happens to have rare nice moments of regular singing, like sometimes i feel like screaming, when a blind man cries, or things like that, and a very unsophisticated person towards his screaming gift. I don't think Ritchie envied Gillan at all, but the power issue they had was about as personal as we could never know, since they didnt parted ways due to musical differences other than Gillan not having his pedigree in blues, wich Ritchie forgot and did perfect strangers together again. There has to be some other shit that makes these dudes hate each other, and im inclined to think thats personal. The thing Ian Gillan has done with Purple after Ritchie s departure was hit and miss, and his refusal to do one off reunion Ritchie extended to him, was asinine. So yeah, i'm team Blackmore on this.
All *deep purple* Records after 'Purpendicular' are more Interesting and Important to me than what they'd done with RB ... Gypsy and Soldier of Fortune are the 2 best songs on the album. I'm with Ritchie - too much funk crept in. The title track is okay. Purple did better hard rock songs.
