- In this video titled EU4 Releasables - I Tried THE REAL SCOTLAND And It Was AMAZING I do a playthrough as Gaeldom after releasing it from Scotland and I try to become a great power in Europa Universalis 4 1.35 Domination. This is the series titled Releasables where I attempt to play every releasable nation in EU4 or Europa Universalis 4. In this video I play as the nation of Gaeldom in EU4. Dev gold mine, Austria usually have strong rivals like Bohemia, France and sometimes Burgundy (maybe pu via event?). In first war I'd take south part of Austria(Venice trade note) and province to release Styria. Then in second retake their cores to prevent the coalition
Because you asked so nicley the difference between the 2 scotlands tags is the gaeldom references the pre anglo invasions celts who lived within what we call Scotland now(they were however pushed back to the highlands of scotlands and are often refered to as higlanders). While the Scottish culture refers a mix of anglos and celts which later formed the Scottish culture
Celts werent pushed out of lowlands. When the Anglos came to Britian they assimilated with the local celtic cultures and mixed with the people. Around 80% of the Scottish dna comes from Celtic peoples
Yeah the Gaelic scotlandsrs were a combo of Irish from dal riata that spoke old Gaelic and Picts which probably spoka Brythonic language

The early medieval Kingdoms of Northumbria and Strathclyde both crossed the border between modern England and Scotland, so there was quite a lot of mixing in that period.

As Tirol own all provinces in the Italy region and controll all provinces required to form Austria and form Austria first and Italy afterwards (Italy is an endtag)
The main thing with the culture is that “Scottish” in game is representative of the Lowlander Scots culture, which is fairly different from Highlander. Scotland pretty much embraced Highlander traditions when the Highland craze came about in the 1800’s since it was making them a lot of money and ever since it’s kinda been lumped together. But Lowland clans often did have a sense of superiority over the Highland clans.
Also as for the flags, St. Andrew’s cross is the _national_ flag of Scotland, while the Lion Rampant coat of arms that is Scotland’s flag in game is the _royal_ flag of Scotland, going back to the Dunkeld royal family, and both are used still today. The Royal seal in the UK is a quartered coat of arms with 2 sections being the English triple lions, one being the Lion Rampant, and the last being the Irish harp. But in Scotland specifically it’s changed where the Lion Rampant has 2 sections, and the English and Irish get 1 section each. I assume this is due to the current royal family originating with James VI Stuart inheriting England
There is no evidence that anyone thought of Scotland as divided into two geographic parts before the 1380s. The descendants of Lowland Gaels & Picts are speaking English today. We are one people.
I'm a Lowlander and this is wrong. Lowland culture in 1444 was not too distinct from Highland culture. Gaelic was in decline now but it would be another century before that was cemented. The in-game provinces of Ayrshire and Dumfries were probably still like 33%+ Gaelic speaking. Social organisation was relatively similar too. The myth of the "Germanic Lowlander" was a 17th/18th century creation.

And btw the difference between Scottish and the Gael is the language they speak. Scottish is a Germanic language related to English and influenced by the Celtic language. Gaelic is an actual Celtic Language, still spoken today in the Outer Hebrides

You're mostly correct with the scotland/highlander thing. The scottish culture in EU4 in the English group I'm fairly sure represents the Scots language, which is considered to be its own language in a very small Anglic language family, alongside various Creole languages like Patois etc.

oh come on Gaeldom (the Highlands) are descendants of and speak the language of the Gaels (the original "Scotts"), Irish tribes who settled in northern Britain starting in the 400's. The ancient gael kingdom of Dal Riata unified with the Kingdom of the Picts during the Viking Age to form what became the kingdom of Scotland. In the lowlands of the east, though, gaelic was never really a majority language and the inhabitants ended up peacefully adopted a variant of the English language during the middle-ages, due to commercial ties and immigration of anglo-norman lords.

@@konplayz No, the Cruthin who were of pictish descent settled in ulster(nothern Ireland) where they then later adopted gaelic culture. This is proven as genetic research has shows nothern ireland is genetically closest to Scotland. Anyway the Scoti which were a tribe that inhabited nothern ireland and western Scotland later unified with the Pictish people and formed ALBA(Scotland).
The Scoti werent "irish". The Hibernia was the tribe that represented irish people and the Scoti was the tribe that represented Scottish/Pictish peoples. But the Scoti were culturally, linglistically, and genetically different from the irish and were closer to mainland Scotland, and descended from Picts from the mainland.

The challenge we play every nation in EU4, that doesn't exist in 1444, except Patiala and Corfu.
I've got a few suggestions/achievements for tirol:
*End of Discussion*:
As Tirol, own or have a subject own all of the austrian and italian core provinces. The Subjects must be of their respective culture. I.e, a subject holding italian cores must have an italian culture as their primary culture. (Could be rather long)
*Skiing and painting*:
As Tirol, directly own and state all of the alps. (Should be a quick and fun campaign)
*German not just in language*:
As Tirol, become the Holy Roman Emperor (or form Germany) and have all your starting provinces be of germanic culture. (Maybe the longest/hardest?)
*Dune Skiing*:
As Tirol, own more desert provinces than mountain provinces. (Very unique, and sounds like a lot of fun imo)
He doesn't do anything like this for releasables. He only breaks free, annexed the overlord, and then has to be on the great powers list with colonialism embraced. He doesn't do any special challenges or achievements. That is only in a to z

Happened to me in my first ever game of EU3. I was playing as Teutons on my laptop really late at night and dozed off for like half an hour. Thankfully, I was playing on low speed, so not too much went wrong.
People from the Scottish culture group either speak English or a language related to English called Scotts, both of these languages are Germanic.
People from the highlander culture group speak Scottish Garlic (or Pictish if the Picts were still around during the 1400's-1500's). Both of these languages are Celtic.
TLDR
1) Scottish people are more related to English people and are Germanic.
2) Scottish Highlander people are more related to Celtic people like Irish Garlic people and are Celtic.
People have already described the Scottish cultural differences but I've a factoid to share. Back in the late Classical/early Medieval period, Scotus/Scotti were generic terms for Irish Gaels, and there was an Irish philosopher at the Carolingian royal academy at Aachen called John Scotus Eriugena, whose name roughly means John the Irishman who was born in Ireland.
Wrong, hiberni was the term given to Irish. Scoti were a tribe that inhabited nothern ireland and western scotland and were of pictish origin
@@overkoppsbaiter0714 Until the 11th Century, Scotland and Ireland were referred to as Scotia Maior (Ireland) and Scotia Minor (Scotland). The bonds between the Scots and Irish were extremely strong, with multiple marriages between Scots and Irish nobility over the centuries.
This is one of the reasons why Robert the Bruce felt so confident in trying to drive the English out of Ireland and crowning his brother Edward as King of Ireland.
Hibernia was the Roman name for Ireland, while Scotti was used to refer to the Gaels specifically. This can be attested to in the case of the High King Brian Boru who took the title Imperator Scottorum (Emperor of the Gaels), while the English kings used the title Dominus Hibernie (Lord of Ireland). It wasn't until the 18th century when the words "Hibernia", "Caledonia" and "Britannia" were revived in widespread use

If you want to be sure france breaks its guarantuee over Scotland, just restart until scotland allies britany (or provence sometimes). Britany is usually 2nd or 3rd on the choppingblock for france

In short:
Scots are Anglo-Norman.
Gaels are Gaelic.
Gaeldom historically refers to the area where Goidelic languages were spoken in Scotland. There was no state called Gaeldom. It’s cool that the game has it, though.

Some clarification: William Wallace was not a Gael, but a Lowlander of Brythonic descent. He probably spoke Gaelic but was not one himself. Also, the Gaeldom was never a real country and Lowlanders are as Scottish as Gaels are.
The difference between highlands and lowlands isnt cultural but more geographic. Highlands are rough terrain and lowlands are mostly flat. But i will give a quick history on Scotlands origins. The Scoti were a gaelic tribe which spanned from nothern ireland and western Scotland, but werent irish. The Scoti were a distinct people with different culture, and origins. The Scoti also primarily descended from the ancient Cruthin people who came from mainland Scotland and were Pictish but adopted gaelic culture. The Scoti had a kingdom called Dal Riata which included nothern ireland and western scotland and its capitol was called dunnad. The Picts inhasbited nothern Scotland and made up the biggest population(like 1;10 i think). Picitsh was the term given to people who painted themselves blue by the romans. Both of the people were celtic. After numerous battles between the two people they ended up uniting to form ALBA(Scotland) in 843 AD. But due to the Picts and Scots constantly invading other celts, the other celts ended up inviting Germanic warriors from mainland europe. These germanic warriors were used to fight the Picts and Scots and settled primarly in south east of Scotland and coastal England. To the south west of Scotland laid the cumbrians who were brythonic celtic. Anyway the kingdom of Scotland ended up unifying/conquering the other kingdoms which helped forge the Scottish identity. Most Scots today descend from Celts(around 80%) and are mostly celtic in culture.
I mean both highland and lowland Scots were both culturally Scottish but spoke a different language (although nowdays all Scots speak Scottish "English" with only a small group speaking Gaelic) similar to Flemish in France speaking a French dialect and Flemish in Flanders speaking Flemish a Dutch language
Rather than just making your overlord not exist, I think you should aim to own all their starting provinces as well, like an Uno Reverse
Highlander culture represents descendants of Irish people who speak Scottish Gaelic, a language descended from Middle Irish. The language was more widespread in Scotland centuries before EU4’s start date but due to some Anglo-Saxon settlement in the South East and influence of the English nobility, by EU4’s start date, Scots, a language descended from Old English, had become the more common language in the lowlands as well as the Language of the Scottish court.
After the personal union of England and Scotland and later acts of union however it would be gradually replaced by English in this capacity. While English is now by far the most common language throughout Scotland, the influence of both Scots and Scottish Gaelic can be seen in the different variants of Scottish English, although probably more so from Scots as there is more of a sliding scale between Scots and Scottish English than them being completely separate from each other.
Just a little thing, Scots was certainly not the language of the courts in Scotland; they were still normans and mostly spoke French and Latin.

Historically (at least in this era) Scotland was split into roughly two culture groups. You had the Gaelic speaking people in the highlands and islands (represented by Gaeldom in EU4) and the people of the lowlands who speak a language/dialect known as Scots which is basically a cousin of English.
There’s hundreds of years of history that caused this cultural divide that I wont go into just now, but thats the gist of it
The difference is basically terrain- "scotland" is focused on the central belt of good flattish farmlands, whereas Gaeldom is the highlands and mountainous regions
The different terrain tends to produce different kinds of people with different cultures and priorities- like anywhere really
Gaelic culture represents Celtic group who lived like a tribe in highlands up until 16th century. When James I formed a personal union over England, he dealt with them. Mostly, like the Bretons, they adapted Scottish culture which are actually again the Celts who were more diplomatically, socially and politically involved in Britain. Influence of "Auld Alliance" is another issue in such discussions. Actually, education in Scotland is more flourished comparing to England's. Due to creating more intimate relationships with the continental countries. Do not forget that we are talking about 3-4 millions of population. Back then England was not as populated as it is today. Most of the continental Europeans think England like a tiny city. That's why, Scottish culture resisted, however Highlander Gaelic culture is disappeared due to being opressed by Stuart Monarchs.

Yo. Can you please use return core peace option in reconquest cb? Its better in most cases (there are very few specific exceptions) since it gives relations with returnee and you can return cores of multiple nations as part of a peace deal at zero diplo cost since its part of the goal...
taking the emperorship after you break free from austria is propably not required to get to the goal for releasables but you should do it anyway because it would be funny

Scottish culture is modern day scots. Essentially, anglo saxons (or anglicized gaels) who speak either english or scots (the language, not the dialect). They are descendants of the anglosaxons who settled the lowlands and the anglicized celts.
Gaelic culture is the scottish gaelic people. The medieval, celtic speaking, woad-wearing scots we all imagine when we think of scotland.
Both are as native to the land as the other. The gaels and anglosaxon invaded pictland in the middle ages. Moder day scotland is the mix of the two.
You are partially correct. Only Anglos settled south east of Scotland from modern day Germany/Danemark. They then mixed with the local celtic population. And the Scoti and picts had numerous battles but ended up uniting to form Scotland.
