- PLANE-SITE sat down for a memorable conversation with Peter Eisenman in his New York City office. Eisenman, a distinguished American architect known as one of the famous New York Five, offers his impressions of the paradigm shifts of global architecture, the conundrum of teaching the architecture of the present, and the common thread which can be traced throughout his entire career.
Curated and produced by PLANE-SITE, this video series features interviews with prominent architects reflecting on the topics of TIME SPACE EXISTENCE, part of the 2016 collateral program at the Venice Architecture Biennale, hosted by the Global Art Affairs Foundation. The diverse roster of accomplished architects includes Denise Scott Brown (USA), Peter Eisenman (USA), Curtis W. Fentress (USA), Meinhard von Gerkan (Germany), Dirk Hebel (Switzerland), Frei Otto (Germany), and Wong Mun Summ and Richard Hassell (Singapore). The series was originally composed for viewing for the duration of the TIME SPACE EXISTENCE exhibition, but now continues to seek out the unique perspectives of accomplished architects on these universal architectural topics.

That comment about technology eliminating value judgement is insightful. I wish he could have elaborated more on that point.

I do think its high time we start giving architecture back to its rightful owners, that is the public, not architects. I do respect his theory but it doesn't make any sense to the end user. When we design we design for the public not for other architects.
When did architecture ever belong to anyone, let alone the public? What even is the public and are architects not a part of it? His interests are not that complex. He is interested in what shapes attitudes and opinions about architecture and how he can use these underlying ideas and assumptions to defamiliarize people from these attitudes and opinions to evoke a more critical reading of everyday experience instead of servicing power like architecture has done for most if not all of its history

Some might say he is conservative but you'll only understand what he's trying to say if you really understand architecture. Present buildings are lifeless masses and it will eventually lead to emotionless society.
Well he is certainly conservative in the sense of his fascination with the canonical and disregard for the present/contemporary. One could argue it is this idealization of theory over practice that has yielded the evolution of architecture from a cultural object to the backdrop of social interaction - or “lifeless buildings” as you call it.

Judaism is a religion not a race or DNA.
Many have converted and are famous rabbis such as Rabbi Akiva ,Meir and Onkelos.

I am not happy now.
It always "what I feel..." with these kind non technical artsy kind of people with implicit declaration from them their feeling is better than yours and I am special look at me mindset. Never "what I know..." and I know from experience they are quick to being political and petty. And architects office is certainly that plus very stifling.
If you knew anything about Eisenman’s work or ideas, you’d know the last thing he is interested in is creative expression or being “artsy.”
The city of culture in Galicia is the worst architecture ive never seen.its not for persons or culture, is only for faraons
Peter Eisenman is a smart guy, more critical than Rem Koolhass, but he is not a good architect. I prefer Richard Meier's to Eisenman's work.
@Beerley Jean Pierre what is a good architecture is very personal. I think architecture has a very specific cultural obligation. Peter Eisenmen is a very intelligent and brave and creative person. it shows in his work too, although being very arrogant. He treats architecture as language but I think architecture should be about construction and space. my preference is on mies van der Roche, le corbusier and louis kahn. they are great masters. peter eisenmen is an interesting person. rem koolhaas is a joke.
@Beerley Jean Pierre I do respect him. I saw him many times when I was studying at Columbia and understand his approach to architecture. he talks a lot and probably too much. I prefer high tech architects like young norman foster or more spacial architect like Alvaro siza. there is no right or wrong in architecture but it is crucially important in human civilization.
@Beerley Jean Pierre there is no wrong or right of architecture. just like art. there is great architecture and great art works.
Architecture is not easy. Computer generated models can't provoke emotions because they weren't inttended to. The proffession requires experience and time, there are no genious kids in architecture like in the other beaux arts. I've been an architect for 24 years by the way.
I believe that the same goes for when you 3d print a model. There is a different relationship of understanding your design (or someone else’s design) when you make a model with your hands vs making it on a computer program and printing it. In my opinion, 3d printing is the lazy approach.

Do yourself a favor and look up some of Eisenman's work. It is FAR from conservative.
Brian Schmitt Maybe formally... but the theoric background he is tring to lay down is absolutly conservative... He gives too much importance to the tradition...Not that I have anything against Palladio, but I think we live in a quite different world and our challenges are different. I Don' think that this mindset, that looks back to the past is what we need right now. Anyway, debating this is always healthy and the discussion remains open...
@@martinho429 ....P.E., by his own admission, suggests that history is a far better alternative because it has (cliche coming) stood the test of time. In other words, the recent histories/theories that are espoused in architecture schools are often built on shaky ground (suggested and otherwise) and fall victim to other unstable, or less tested, lines of inquiry. I don't agree with PE, however, the constant collapse of recent histories (ie. think of how wildly popular parametric design was and where it is now) leaves narrower and narrower alternatives.
