💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
In this video, I explain how to write a song on guitar in a minor key.
This video is part one of a two-part series that I have planned.
In part one, we create a song form and write chord progressions for each section.
In part two (coming next week), we’ll finish the song by writing melodies for lead guitar and vocals.
My process in this lesson has four steps:
1. Map out chord options
2. Create a song form
3. Write chord progressions
4. Play through the song form
We go through a bunch of exercises to help you understand all the options to choose from when writing chord progressions.
You can also learn to use some chords that are outside of the key!
At the end, I play the chords with drums and bass to give you a sense of how the complete song is going to sound.
I hope you enjoy this lesson about how to write a song on guitar!
Let me know what you thought in the comments.
Thanks! :)
- Jared

Hey Jared, I downloaded this chart over a year ago, and it has become an invaluable resource for me. Thank you so much. I still occasionally find another chord option from the chart that I have previously missed, and it invariably fits the occasion perfectly and serves to further my knowledge of available diatonic CAGED tones. Have you ever considered two additional pages for F and B?
I understand that F is essentially E from CAGED raised one fret and similarly B is A from CAGED raised two frets but the options for extensions (7, maj7, 9, 11, 13, 6/9, minors etc.) and open strings could make it an equally valuable addition.
Keep up the great work.
Jared! いつも ありがとうございます!
Thank you always for your help and sharing your amazing lessons, and teaching us. If there was a Nobel Prize for Guitar...you would win it hands down. Or maybe, hands up. :)
I was struggling with this process for months...trying to compose some tunes, and you totally nailed it. As a member of some of your other courses (chord melody magic for one), I am always appreciative of your willingness to teach such powerful stuff, and in an easy to understand and chill style.
I can't wait...though i know i have to...for part II.
Haha 🥹
I'm glad you think the content is powerful and helpful. I think you'll enjoy part two next week!
Jared never misses with these series ideas! I can sense another absolute CLASSIC here! Thanks for all your hard work man. Looking forward to watching this properly later.
Aw, sweet 🫶
Glad you dig the idea!
That is a great lesson Jared. Both my daughter and I will go through this.
you're a saint. ty much havinng fun learning jared
Wonderful teaching again, Jared. I always wondered how people write with music first. This will help reduce the trial and error time in my own process. I start with the rough lyrics and purpose of the song first and then hunt for chords and melody that will match the emotion of it. Knowing the chord options will help at that point for me. Some songs take 20 minutes to write, but one took me 20 years because it has a weird selection of chords. I love it, but even today I still don't know what key it's in, or even what some of the chords are 😂. I hope you will talk about how you pick what your song is about. For you, does it emerge from the sounds of the chords?
my approach to writing songs is exactly like that...and it just works...very interesting video...excited to see the follow up
Cool! Glad you found it interesting. Part two is gonna be fun 🤘
Saving and watching on repeat 🙂

I'm glad it's useful!
This is some amazing stuff. I dig the process. I can see a song writing course on the horizon! 😊
Thanks as always for the comment, Sean. I'm happy the process is inspiring for you 😊
Very cool lesson and superb production, thanks!
Hey, thanks so much! 🙏
Cool Jared, waiting 2 C what you R going 2 do next Thanx
This is an amazing video. Extremely informative. Thank you!
Great! Glad to hear it! 🙏
I am always curious how to create a song the other way around. That is when you START with the melody line, and then add chords underneath. How do you do that?? Every video I watch always starts with the chords, and adds melody later.
That's a really good question. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I'll definitely consider making a video on harmonizing melodies specifically in the context of songwriting.
For now, I do have a video that touches on the theory of harmonizing melodies. That might be helpful for you.

So cool. Maybe you're a singer, or whistler, and melody first would be a logical way to start. So then you'd have a piece of a melody in your head first, right? Then you'd have to figure out your base note, I.e, the key it's in. Then, like Jared says, find the chord family options, minor or major. Then, recording bits as you go, sing the melody wherever it wants to go, straight from your heart, and figuring out which chords of the family match it. Then, when you have a rough of the whole thing, keep singing it--in the shower, while driving--and your singer's brain will add in the polishing refinements to make your final song.
