Man, 1999! I remember playing this and yeah, the controls were hard to wrestle with. Bring on more remasters! This will probably get a Limited Run Games physical
Hi Mark & Glen. I kind of messed up and made a typo in the email I entered when I bought a gift card from the site. Could you please help me with this? Perhaps by resending the same gift card code to the correct email? Thank you! PS: It would be great if you could have either a support email or a support section on your website!
Yes! Also Soul Reaver. That would be great, Come on Nintendo, I would be happy with the original port even, just bring it to the switch, and physically.
@@r_apt_ure The full Legacy of Kain series would be my dream. Pretty sure Square Enix own Crystal Dynamics now so I guess it's up to them if we ever get them.
I remember back in the day, my dad bought this game for me and my mom threw a huge fit because of the content 🤣 Dad didn't care he wanted to play it too, and we had so much fun! I will always remember this game. One of the best birthday presents ever lol
I remember my mother LOOSING HER SHIT over me renting forsaken 64. I have no idea how it got rated mature but you should look up videos, the only thing I can think of is the dumb blood splatter when your ship crashes
@@mariobeans lmao! I'll check it out. And yeah, that sounds about right for games back then. It didn't take much for them to be rated mature. My mom learned after a while tho that it wasn't that big of a deal. She calmed down quite a bit after that. She still HATES horror movies tho, which is also another way me and my dad bond. We've been watching scary movies since I was like 2. And I grew up alright! No murderer here! ..well.. so far anyway Jk jk
Hi SwitchUp, cracking review. It was a pleasure to work on the project again after 20 years. I added 1h20m of new music to the game. As well as the new levels, there is extra music dotted around some of the original levels too. Especially in the Asylum. The entire soundtrack now rocks in at over 3hours! So great for a long journey - INTO DEAD SIDE!
Hi Tim can you clear this up, there's songs in the remaster that play out like the original but have new sections to them and new songs like in the Salvage Yard, is all the new music stuff cut from the original game, or did you compose all the new stuff if so, just wow it's rare to see newly composed music fit 100%, last who or want inspired the music for the game, i can't find and tv series, movies, games or bands that have the same style.
@@robmorris4056 Thanks, there were 2 pieces of music, recovered from old data. The rest was brand new to the game, mostly written over the last few years. I've been writing new material based on the music ideas from Shadow Man for a while now. The Remaster was the ideal opportunity to bring the music to the game. 🙂
@@robmorris4056 The game itself, the story and the visuals inspired me. I would say that David Lynch's Eraser Head, had an influence as well. But mostly it was just a culmination of life experiences up until that point, and I have always thought that a game makes its own demands, not sure I can explain that really, but when I look at a game, I can hear the music in my head before I write it.
Omg, this was one of my favourite N64 games, completely forgot about it. I hired it from the video store countless times. Can't remember much of it, but definitely purchasing for the nostalgia
Night Dive are brilliant at tricking the nostalgia lobe in the brain while hugely improving the game. I already bought Turok 1 and Forsaken and they are both brilliant, I had a lot of fun with Turok as that was a game I didn't enjoy on N64 but with buttery smooth FPS and good controls I think it now plays better than many modern FPS games, so I will pick up Shadowman as well because I didn't get on with that on N64 either but with the jank removed and HD assets to make the N64 visuals pop I reckon I'll finally enjoy it enough to complete it.
Played this to death on Dreamcast back in the day, underated gem of its time. Looks a fantastic remake, Nightdive really know how to bring old games into the modern era whilst keeping the essence of what made the game great - pity they didn't get the Gta trilogy gig!
This is one of my all-time favourites. The atmosphere and soundtrack is just so good, it easily makes up for some gameplay flaws. Can't wait to dive back in and discover the extra content. Btw, the map you showed, came with the N64 game back in the day. I think I still have it somewhere.
Thanks for the review! This game made a huge impression on me when I played it back on the N64, it was so good. Can’t wait to be able to play it again.
I don't remember this game at all as a kid. The work the developers put into this one with all the recommendations the connect section for this one definitely had me intrigued!
Never played the original one but it's great to hear so much love was put into this remaster. Between this and those bloodrayne remasters it's good to see a lot of old games that no one asked for are getting good remastered versions.
I never played the original my mum was the type who bought us games like crash bandicoot and spyro because “video games might kids into violent psychopaths” was pretty much all over the media and she agreed with it (for a while anyway) but I think I’m going to pick this up looks like something I’d enjoy and let’s be honest they’ve put a lot of work into it and kept the price tag low .. unlike another company who recently released a trilogy of games that looks less appealing than a dogs dinner no names mentioned but you know who im on about 🤣
My mom was similar in my childhood. She is a Christian and believed that me playing the witcher 3 or any game with "magic/witches" would bring the devil in our house💀
One of the very few games I didn’t complete on the N64. I remember I was so excited when 12 year old me got it. And yep I hid from my mum too playing it when I was meant to be sleeping, great times. Thanks for the review and for the nostalgia ✌️ awesome as always
My absolute favorite game ever made - it’s a haunting masterpiece, mesmerizing, gut wrenching, emotional, horrifying and that ending: poor Michael. The music in the Cageways and the Play Rooms- OMG and the Milton Pike level music and sounds is on another level of terrifying
Me and one of my stepsons used to play this together on N64, taking it in turns to have the controller. Probably one of the first experiences I had of a videogame that had a darker, more adult vibe, and I remember the intro (with Moonlight Sonata playing) being so atmospheric.
Nice review! I'll be revisiting Shadowman for sure. I think Digital Foundry made a video recently recommending certain options to get the best graphical quality/performance balance on Switch, at least until a patch is released! Cheers!
I remember I got it second hand back in the N64 day! Loved the atmosphere. Never found the controls that bad, at least compared to what else was available on the N64 at that time, but I did get lost all of the time and kept running around in circles (that game really didn't hold your hand!). Never got around to fight any of the five! Looking forward to try it again with 20+ years of additional gaming experience now 😁.
Switch is the perfect machine for retro games. Bring on all old school goods 👌🏽 barely even remember this game outside of the protagonist, but it looks like a great remaster
This is an awesome game - it's great to see it got a re-release! It never got the attention it deserved because it was on the N64 and Dreamcast, two consoles that were overshadowed by their competitors.
Brilliant review. I loved this as a kid, and the sounds and clips brought back some nostalgic memories. I immediately purchased and started downloading after watching earlier this morning, thank you 👏. Not bad for just over £15.
Ah yes, there I was at age 18, having just beaten DOOM 64 and Turok: Dinosaur Hunter on my beloved N64, and I went to Blockbuster to rent a game. This might have been the first N64 game I ever rented, but I played the HELL out of it, beat it in a few days to a week, and always remembered it fondly.
It's great they can keep the prices down, too. This is the price of nostalgia, but for some of us (older) gamers, we're happy reliving experiences rather than seeing new games and gimmicks.
I would love a remaster of Gheist, such a hidden gem on the gamecube, although a remake would work better, because I m not sure all of the gameplay mechanics have ages wel. Still the core posession idea is brilliant
I would suggest going to Digital Foundry's channel after this video and checking out the video on this. John gives his optimal settings for quality / performance balance.
I remember really enjoying the experience as a kid but knowing the frustrations of getting lost and the controls, definitely want to get this and play as well as support the devs so they can keep the classics coming.
Really excited for playing this one, one day. I still remember seeing the adverts of the box art while reading comic books and thinking the character looks really cool

Never played the original. Wasn’t sure if it was for me when I saw it mentioned in your last review. Now I can say it’s definitely not for me but great review like always and for those who are getting it, have fun :)
This is definitely on my must buy list as I had both the original release of Shadow Man on the PS1, and the sequel Shadow Man: 2nd Coming for the PS2 and loved them, as well as being a fan of the comic series that inspired the games that is still an on-going series.
Wow, can't believe I'm seeing this, brings back great memories. I originally bought this in 1999 for the ps1 as it was much cheaper than the n64 version. Got home and played it and was totally underwhelmed with the graphics compared to screenshots I had seen for the n64 version. I took it back to my local gaming emporium and swapped it for the n64 version which was far superior in my eyes. Don't believe I ever completed it and will definitely be downloading this fine game!
Maaan, I didn't finish this game because of the tanky controls back in the day, this really brings me back to the days of the first marvel movies, especially ghost rider, Daredevil and the punisher, which made me think "why not a shadow-man movie?". It's definetely on my whis list, at least until the next paycheck arrives
Remember this back in the day on the PS1 (the map seen in the video was btw included with at least the PS1 version). I had a hard time getting my heads around it. I used I don't know how long to jump on to a platform it really toke time to get use to controls. However when you did it was a little diamond rough. Remember the battle against Jack the Ripper as well, however the build up I remember to be better than the actually fight it self. One of the more succesful licensed games at the time.
I didn't know they remastered this. I played it as a 6 year old child. Had absolutely no idea what to do or what was going on, but somehow was able to get past the first level, Im going to have to look into this
Never heard of this game before you mentioned it in the upcoming games and now the review. Might gonna buy it and never look at it again as it vanishes in my backlog of games xD Also 1999 like damn i feel old now. I turn 27 this year but still it feels like an eternity.
i never played this back when it was released unfortunately but man i'm loving the game i have to say (switch version). definitely my type of game for sure and night dive studios are doing a great job with their ports of all these classic games (and releasing them for consoles) am def looking forward to exhumed/powerslave and system shock 2.
Awesome I plan on getting the digital copy, but I hope we see a Limited Run physical release in the same vein as Nightdive's other releases on the switch
Ah Michael Leroi has been trapped in Deadside for 20 years, clutching his brother's teddy bear and lurking in my N64 cartridge in a cupboard somewhere. I never finished it, I just kept getting lost and it gave me a headache. Spooky game though, loved it.
No one "came up" with that map actually. That was a pamphlet included in all original physical copies of the game. It really is essential and the developers knew that. The more you know :)
I’m gonna hold off on buying this game for now to see if a physical gets announced, but either way I will get it eventually. This game was in my regular rotation of N64 games to rent from the video store back in the day. Good times!
As someone that never played the original, I've gotta say that I'm enjoying this game a lot. I can only imagine how many children were left traumatized back in the day.
This is the first game that was genuinely creepy. The crazy levels, the janky control, interesting characters, the awesome soundtrack and story were amazing. It was like playing a nightmare. I'd love to see a proper remake with the unreal 5 engine but stay true to the original spirit.
Would love to see Nightdive bring back the original Deus Ex, Eternal Darkness, The Suffering series, Jet Force Gemini, Perfect Dark and other beloved classics to the Switch as well…
No nostalgia for me unfortunately so I will probably be sticking with the more recent "darker" titles that are available. I may come back around and give it a try but only time will tell. Thanks for another great review and props to the team that brought this one over, they did a stellar job.
One interesting fact, is there are samples of music in this games soundtrack that are from actual Vodoun Cultural music that is hard to find, but exists. Those samples being most, if not all of the Tribal sounds and beats in this game.
Ha it’s been a minute since I finished this one - we’ll take a look a the Switch version and have a look at all bells and whistles they added in. Mark

I've love to see a remaster, of Hunter the Reckoning on Switch.
Remembered renting this at blockbuster back in the day and the rep didn’t care lol. Had to been under 18 at the time. IMO a classic of a game
This is the first game that was genuinely creepy. The crazy levels, the janky control, interesting characters, the awesome soundtrack and story were amazing. It was like playing a nightmare. I'd love to see a proper remake with the unreal 5 engine but stay true to the original spirit.
Love me some Shadow Man. One of my favorite themes too.
Would love to see Nightdive bring back the original Deus Ex, Eternal Darkness, The Suffering series, Jet Force Gemini, Perfect Dark and other beloved classics to the Switch as well…
I'm impressed 😁
Never actually played this. Looks interesting 🤔
Loved this on n64 & dreamcast & loved the valiant comic series too so really interested in picking this up
No nostalgia for me unfortunately so I will probably be sticking with the more recent "darker" titles that are available. I may come back around and give it a try but only time will tell. Thanks for another great review and props to the team that brought this one over, they did a stellar job.
My favorite game on N64, coming to switch?Sweet!
One interesting fact, is there are samples of music in this games soundtrack that are from actual Vodoun Cultural music that is hard to find, but exists. Those samples being most, if not all of the Tribal sounds and beats in this game.
Ive finished this game on the PS1 console and a had a blast. I wish they port in Vagrant Story and Soul Reaver as well.
That music took me back to 1999 no doubt about it...
