FIDE as an organization on the other hand have everything to lose, they overestimated their influence, especially by threatening top players over not participating in the freestyle chess tournament (which Magnus reportedly poured in more than 10m $ into) and with this last act it reached a breaking point.
FIDE is delusional if they think they can antagonize the GOAT to such an extent. It is FIDE itself that will change as a result of this.

Who’s the psychopath that kicks out someone from a tournament because he is wearing blue jeans instead of another type of trousers? What’s the problem that prevents him from competing?
What’s chess got to do with this nonsense? All top players should take a strong stance on this
Who is the psychopath who agrees to the tournament rules by participating then violates the rules, is given the chance to comply within a reasonable timeframe, but then decides to throw the towel instead of complying like everyone else? If he had an issue with the dress code, he should have spoken up when it was released and feedback was sought for. He could have still uttered his concerns ahead of the tournament, or while complying. This isn't about jeans, this is more likely about Carlsen's poor performance (for his standards) in this tournament and the fact that he is financially involved in a non-FIDE event and begrudges FIDE for not lying down when random organisations claim they are organising "world championship" events. There is a mature way to resolve differences and Magnus did not choose it.
Just one question. Would Magnus have walked out if he was at the top of the table?
The 2 replies are where its at. Bravo you 2 👏
@@coolcat23 He said he would change them tomorrow after finishing the last game. He took the fine, he clearly had no issues with the rule existing and just made a mistake. What is insane is going beyond a fine and requiring the player to go change between games when they should be preparing for the next game.
Magnus's chances at the tournament were still completely fine. It wouldn't have been the easiest win ever by any means but he has played and won worse without causing a problem. FIDE is the one who decided to escalate from a fine to ending Magnus's tournament run.
Additionally, why should FIDE hold the exclusive rights to the words "world championship"? Clearly they hold those rights for the "World Chess Championship" and the "World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship", but they have no reason to cause problems for the "Freestyle Chess World Championship" which does not use their branding or the names associated with FIDE nor runs in a format FIDE officially governs in chess. If someone decided to start another random tournament and called it the "World Chess Championship" then absolutely FIDE would be within their right as governing body to take issue with that, as they run the world classical chess championship. But they do not run a freestyle chess world championship, and therefore have no right to govern that tournament and the naming conventions of it.
@@bhuvaneshwarivenkataraman7815 Probably, and it baffles me how biased you must be against magnus to claim otherwise.
Events like this should be selling the game as young and exciting not telling the world that if your clothes aren’t fuddy duddy enough you’re not wanted.
So true, it's one thing showing up in your underwear, any restrictions above this (within reason) is just over stepping what they actually are, a game of chess... Bro he doesn''t give a SINGLE fuck. I admire it.
But when women dgaf they get dragged through the mud and spat out. You should admire it from people that actually have something to lose, like that Iranian climber that didn't climb with a burka on and got kidnapped at the airport by her own government. Bet you didn't know that happened 😊
If he really gives no fuck he wouldn't be throwing microphones around.
Funny that you admire the one guy that has nothing to lose. What about all the women that had to wear high heels to a chess game. Imagine someone forced you to wear high heels. But suuuure, admire how the best chess player said FU to organisers in Levy's face while Levy scolded Hans for the same behavior. But Levy doesn't have the balls to tell Magnus how to talk 😂😂 you phonies... When a rich powerful man says something 🍆🍆🍆🍆 when an Iranian climber goes on stage without her burka and gets kidnapped at the airport by her government 🦗🦗🦗🦗
ehh, he gave at least one!
I’m not even a Magnus fan but, bravo.
one day its gonna get to a point where these players realize they don't need fide anymore
That point happened in 1993, when Kasparov and Short broke away from FIDE and formed the PCA. It didn't last long -- it wasn't really a proper chess organizing body -- so it folded, and FIDE reassumed control.
This abortive rebellion demonstrated that it takes more than a defiant "we don't need FIDE" attitude to wrest control of world chess away from this organization.
It reminds me of the snooker dress code, everyone is expected to dress like its 1960. Gradually it's being updated and players are being allowed to dress a bit more casually. That said, as long as the rules stand, and those rules are where the line is drawn, it's only logical that they are enforced. Some players are irritated about it, and in this case Magnus protests in this way and got a bit stubborn but imo he should have just changed and gotten on with it, I think he would have liked to play if it weren't for this and us fans would have enjoyed it also.
The only comment I agree with 👍

The rules do not state the punishment if I'm not mistaken. Banning for even a game is way out of line for this. A fine for a couple of hundred bucks would be sufficient.
And there have been many players with jeans who weren't harrased. Probably because they weren't televised. But if you throw out the goat because of a rule you better make sure that it is generally applied.

Freestyle chess only for elitists, casual players will always prefer normal chess
@@Soumava-y4e That's kind of odd, no? As a casual player, one of the main advantages other players will have over you is remembering various lines of an opening, which is pretty much made useless in the freestyle format. Now I'm not saying that casual players would even care about the disadvantages they have as a player in the first place, but if you were new to chess and didn't want to deal with such a disadvantage then I think freestyle would appeal to these players much more.
@@Study_Reverie the thing is before pandemic, at least what I have seen super casual players including me who used to play with their grandparents or school friends did not know much about opening theory, we just used to know some simple e4 and d4 opening steps and how to avoid easy mates like fool's mate, scholar's mate, most of the play was quite random and simple calculation based,we just used to learn as we played, we never read chess theory books or used online resources, so whether you play calssical or freestyle made no difference

Doing this for a chess tournament is so utterly ridiculous… FIDE needs to be abolished or massively reformed ASAP!!!
or step into 2024
They really don’t get it do they?!?! LOL It’s easy to see why Chess isn’t as popular as it should be
My family sells formal clothes in Italy since 1922, nowadays it's perfectly formal for us to sell jacket+jeans even for some weddings.
Wow, "CORPORATE ACCOUNTING". Since they're "pretty strict" on attire, what happens when you break the rules of attire?
Should’ve shown his disagreements before signing up for the tournament. If someone signs up, they agree to ‘the conditions’
that was the most painful last 20 seconds of a video i have seen in a long time.
So I just looked up the FIDE dress code and this seems weird. In section 3 it says jeans are acceptable. But in section four it says they are not for Winners in award ceremonies. Seeing as this is not an award ceremony it doesnt seem like the no jeans rule should apply. There might be somewhere else where it specifically states the higher dresscode for high profile games or champion players or whatever, but from the easily accessible FIDE dress code PDF it deosnt seem like Magnus was in violation. Which means its actually completely reasonable for him to not know he wasnt supposed to wear jeans. If he did break a rule its not nearly as clear cut as it would seem. And if he did since its a technicality on dresscode he could reasonably not be aware of bringing the hammer down on it doesnt feel right.
He was already performing worse than he would like and he didnt want to go to his hotel and back for a pair of pants and mess with his flow. You can say he should've sucked it up and done it anyway, but seeing as he's been getting fed up with FIDE in general recently he decided to crash out instead. Regardless of what you think of Magnus' choice here I think this was not the time for FIDE to be stringent about dresscode technicalities. Also according to Nepo many, many players had similar slight violations of dresscode, so from an event perspective, maybe send out some kind of memo to all teams and players reminding them of the rules and that they will be strictly enforced the next day instead of deciding its top priority for certain players part way through one day. Just spitballing but I think that would be a better approach. Since he was far from the only one in violation that really makes me think this wasnt clearly communicated from the outset.
Very reasonable take. I would also suggest that since many players will have travelled to take part in the tournament they are unlikely to have been able to bring a large wardrobe of clothes with them and so it is really incumbent on FIDE to make the dress code very clear well ahead of time.
I don't know all the details of this situation and so far I have only heard Magnus' side of the story but it does appear to be a rather petty and churlish enforcement of the rules by FIDE.
They showed the (very unprofessional looking) slide for World Championship events, and it had "jeans" with a big red stamp that said "NOT ALLOWED" and "Jeans are not widely accepted to be formal attire" - which frankly just is not true in 2024.
If the jeans were a problem, they should have been a problem before game 1. Just let chess players arrive an hour in advance for inspection of the dress code. Also dress codes are such an ancient concept.
@@xCupressocyparis The dress codes are clear but Magnus made a mistake by not wearing the correct pants because he was in a hurry. Everyone has the proper clothes in the world championship and they know very well what to wear in a chess tournament.
@r0260064 I don't mind the dress codes as a concept. Imagine if everyone was wearing advertisements on their clothes like in other sports

"Welcome back everyone for todaaaay's video" 😆
Discretion (fine him) would have solved this amicably and been good for the game. Instead, the arbiter chose the heavy handed ego approach to enforce the rule with no discretion which will do nothing but harm the tournament, sponsors, FIDE, and chess as a whole. The NFL and better organizations don't pull players like Tyreek Hill off the field for sock policy violations, they slap them with a fine because they know the fans care more about the players than the organization and they know what is important.
so you think a $200 fine will make him learn. He's GOAT but an arrogant person. He was warned before the march and he chose not to correct his mistake. Had this been the case with any other player this channel wouldn't be making such a big deal out of this!
Also he was disqualified to play the last round and he decided to pull out of the tournament. I don't think FIDE is at fault in this case.

According to the dress code, fine for the first infringement (round 7 if I had to take a guess), 2nd infringement for round 8 which means disqualification for the next round. Seems like they did what they announced. However, dress code also applies to officials and other players, and they seem to have been much more lazy there. The double standards are much more of the issue imho
But why are jeans a problem during games? (See fide dress code section 3 a) 🤯
@@SteffiHammerich wow I just looked it up. Jeans are allowed. So it was not reasonable to expect a player not to come in jeans, he was following the written dress code. There is officially no excuse for this, he would probably win an appeal but doesn't care enough anymore.

While in the beginning I agreed with the argument of “who really cares what he wears” but then I talked about and realized that clothing can be used to distract people. One person wears jeans then another will wear a bright colored shirt. Including being late to matches you can think of it as psychological pressure to take advantage of in games.
And we know Magnus would be the loudest complainer if he lost to someone who avoided a dress code.

My take (even if nobody requested for it 🤣)
Yes , rule is rule for everybody even if you are the best. But the regulation of the rule should be in accordance with the seriousness of the rule. If the rule is something related to lighter topics, like dressing code, the regulation must NOT be strict. If the rule is on cheating, the regulations can be strict. So I am with Magnus on this one.
And let’s face it Magnus looked pretty smart - ok if he turned up in a t shirt, shorts and flip flops then FIDE might have a point.
Seems like a pre planned marketing strategy to assentuate the stupid side of fide and how they perceive the game
The jeans rule is stupid.
Once a penalty is applied, forcing a player to change between rounds is heavy handed, so unless the case is extreme, it’s stupid.
I’ve heard from a few places that there are other players wearing jeans or sporting dress code violations. One could argue that going after the top guy sets an example, but I would argue that if it’s a problem you should go after everyone, or no one.
On the back of the recent tension between Carlsen and FIDE regarding freestyle chess, this smacks of potential corruption, especially if the rule has been unequally enforced.
When a player of Magnus’ reputation walks away because of a “simple” rule enforcement, that could be because they are a diva, or because of a long standing policy of bullheaded corrupt crony bureaucratic decision making. I see it as mostly the latter.
Why not both. The guy who falsely accused Hans is definitely the biggest diva. But sexism and elitism exist independently and only when a man makes a big deal out of it people pay attention
Another example of a corporation ruining sport or art. I'm with Magnus on this and not because he is Magnus but because all my life I try and follow common sense:
1.) people watching chess want to see good chess in the first place, dress code is the last of our worries
2.) rules should be the same for everyone- either everyone with jeans allowed to play, or allowed not to play (which didn't happen)
3.) the dress code rule is there to uphold a certain standard of formality and class-
a) nice jeans of grey or black colour are in many places considerered a formal attire nowadays &
b) this ruckus caused exactly the opposite of what the rule is there for, the event is now laughable
4.) the rules enforcements should be scaled properly as to the importance of the broken rule: a fine is completely acceptable for this minor offence, banning someone from play in case they broke it again is completely acceptable, but banning someone (let alone a defending champion) right away and thus ruining his chances at winning and many people's viewing experience, that is completely innacceptable.
5.) if FIDE really cares that much about suit trousers that they want them changed immediately, they should offer the players spare ones
Actually a few correction:
2.) Other players had to change clothes for example Nepo.
4.) He had been given multiple rounds to change the jeans for something else.
@@Ploeppsel 2.) the players on lower ranked boards were left as they were
