When you really listen to any Jeff Buckley vocal performance, you realize within the first couple seconds that there is an overwhelming amount of detail and nuance present in every phrase.
What's more... Everything he does sounds so improvised and off-the-cuff. It makes learning and internalizing the Jeff Buckley way of singing frustrating and unapproachable if you don't know how to listen to Jeff Buckley. ...If you don't know the right ways to be musically inspired and vocally energized.
Let's go through one of the greatest Jeff Buckley studio performances of all time and appreciate it for the detail and possibility it presents! Let me show you how you can take some of what Buckley does and inform your own vocal inspiration!
Lover you should've come over is another standout.Too bad he did not finish his second record. Everybody here wants you is sublime.
everybody here wants you is such an underrated song and vocal performance
For anyone that really wants to get a feel for Jeff's vocals, go listen to his live performances ! Even in the same songs he doesn't sing or play it the same way each time. Listen to the inflections he makes in each one, that should give you a hint that even you don't need to copy everything he does exactly. In my opinion, that's something that the best musicians do. It's their ability to adapt and improvise.
You are an idiot
No respect
Learn how to sing and be respectful to people who can
Chris Cornell and Jeff are also my biggest vocal inspirations - great to hear you speak on this song in particular, man!
Thanks Ryan!
Conversational!!!! I’ve never thought of that, but that is such a great way to describe his vocal styling. I love it. I am so in awe of Jeff Buckley. Thank you for this analysis.
You’re very welcome Sunny!
Dude, as someone who is only 3 years younger than JB and started listening to him on XRT when I lived in Wrigleyville (and I’m a former vocalist-mom of a 10yo now, so haven’t gigged in forever!), you’ve got the closest ability to replicate Jeff Buckley’s tone and emotion. NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE TO DO. Very impressed. Who knew 25 years later, his music would still have such a profound impact on my life as well as millions of others. Timeless. There has never been another Jeff Buckley and after all this time, it’s hard to imagine there ever will be. Jeff vowed to never get into drugs or substances like his dad and he lived up to that til his tragic drowning. He was able to keep that vow. He had the equivalent of ONE glass of wine in his toxicology report when he was swept away by the undertow of the water from that tugboat that stole his life too soon. Yet the irony of the foreshadowing of his death in so many of his lyrics was-just-indescribable. Thank you for keeping him alive.
My favourite song of his. Songwriting, guitar playing and of course his amazing voice. He was one of the greatest!
Jeff Buckley is one of my all time favorites. As a vocalist and songwriter myself, I take a lot of inspiration from him. What a treasure he was. Great video!
Recently discovered Jeff for the first time. And your channel also. Double whammy. Thanks for doing your thing for all of us!
“Lover you should have come over” slays me every time.
I'm glad that you touched Last Goodbye, Chris! This is the second song I've covered for the Official Brooklyn Jeff Buckley Tribute Concert in 2021. Jeff, we miss you! ❤
Jeff Buckley is one of my favorite musicians of all time! It’s him and Mike Patton.
Wow... my introduction to this guy was an analysis on Thom Yorke & Jeff Buckly was one of my favorite singer song writers. Grace was amazing... I just grieve over what was lost by his untimely passing. Of what could hav been what would hav been. Most younger people are missing out as so many have never experienced Jeff's music & pristine vocal ability The emotion in his voice ...
More Jeff Buckley content please there’s so much to learn from his songs!
As someone who's been this song front and backwards for decades, I now have an even deeper appreciation for all these vocal nuances I didn't know of. God, I love this song so much, so many great memories from my teens
I can’t sing or understand most of the analysis but I love Jeff’s music and appreciate how you break it down so well.
I didn't know much about Jeff growing up. So, I just looked into his life. So sad how it ended, to young at 30. :/ He had so much more to give the world. Im pretty taken back right now :/ Thanks for sharing his Incredible Amazing Talent Chris!
You’re so very welcome David!
Chris, your unapologetic approach to the freedoms of creating music are refreshing to say the least. Yes, technique can play a big part in the process but I'm a firm believer in just letting it happen. As you seem to be as well. I do my own thing for sure but Buckley and Cornell have been enormous influencers for my own writing. Thanks for another killer episode and knocking it out if the park yet again. "Play the music and play it loud" Jeff Buckley...
Jeff is really one of the greatest, but man, you nail it every time! You rock as hell, love you man
A life changing album for me. Just showed me a new language that I am forever grateful for. Great analysis, really like your way of explaining.
The first time I heard Jeff sing I cried he has the voice of an angel 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great video! I heard this song 25 years ago and nothing has ever captivated and/or amazed me ever since. He was the greatest singer/songwriter, Grace is the greatest album, and Last Goodbye is the greatest song of our generation. Thanks again
14:55 made me realize Jerry Seinfeld talks that way 😂 Superb video Chris, thanks.
Thank you so much for this, Chris! Jeff is truly special, and with your analysis we can appreciate him even more.
also one of my favorites by Jeff. My favorite, vocally, is Everybody Here Wants You from his post-mortem album. Great insight on the Robert Plant reference. From what ive been told, both Plant & Buckley had a LOT of influence on their stylings from female jazz vocalists, so that makes sense.
Oh my oh my I am so grateful the UA-cam algorithm showed me this. Incredible breakdown.
Just started following your channel and learning to sing. I started learning this song last night and this video popped up today. Great timing! Keep up the good work
You should react to a song by his father, Tim Buckley. He certainly recorded some interesting vocal performances across his stylistically eclectic career.
Hi Chris, thanks for doing these videos! It happened so that the only song by Jeff Buckley I've heard so far was Hallelujah. Shame on me, I'll go listen to Grace now. I better run. And if I may wish something here... a video on Annie Lennox, please.
@Benjamin Voloz Check out the BBC Late Show version of Jeff’s song, Grace.
Chris, your influences are really the greatest, that's why you're such a good vocalist and a good vocal coach. Chris Cornell and Jeff Buckley are the most creative song writers and vocalists, and I think that if they had not written their own music, their vocals would not have shined as much.
Amazing breakdown man. It's literally a masterpiece.
Great vocal analysis!!! There is always great insight and helpful tips on all the videos you post, including the reaction videos.
Yesss!!!! More Jeff videos please!! Especially his live performances if you can! Thanks Chriss
Love it. I've always thought he must be one of your biggest vocal inspirations.
I'm not a singer but I love your videos and this is one of the bests!
Chris makes it looks so easy. "just do it" 😅😅😅
I heard his influence in the song you wrote for the woman whose mother was transitioning , J.B.was lightning in something way beyond a bottle , would love to hear you juxtapose him w his father Tim . Thank you for your work .
My fav male artist of all time is Jeff Buckley ❤️ No wonder why I like you so much, Chris! Lol!
Aaaah finally!!!!
Thank you so much Chris!
Thanks Chris, this will elevate many to a higher level... 🙏🏼
Great video Chris, Jeff Buckley is one of my all time favorite singers and you did an excellent job of displaying his characteristics. I definitely did alot of his head-transition without even acknowledging it, until now!
Nice! It's great to discover things about your voice you didn't know were fully there until you felt through a favorite singer's approach. SO good ! :)
My all time favourite song and album; a talent lost far too young. This came out while I was going through a breakup, and later moving to Europe so it's had different meanings for me. I sing Lilac Wine in the shower.
Just discovered your channel. I am hooked!!!
Love Jeff ❤️
His voice is haunting.
as always, I loved it. You really analyze the way the best singers sing. Thank you so much. It helps a lot!
You’re so very welcome. I enjoy it immensely especially with a song like this!
idk if you’ve done a pj harvey video but the versatility she has as an artist is amazing
Awesome great. So sound great music
Awesome, master Chris! Just a little note: the main influence of Grace, and also the main co-songwriter is Gary Lucas, the man of the thousand guitars and one of the best guitar players in history! Apart from that, I LOVE HOW YOU BREAKDOWN WHAT THE GREATS DO! It is super enlightening and has helped me work through my own voice and approach! THANK YOU CHRIS AND KEEP UPLOADING THESE GREAT VIDEOS!!!!!
Thanks Julian!
Yup you definitely get it!
Ya know Chris, the ability for a singer to find their voice in slower songs verses faster songs is pretty crucial dont ya think cuz, the singer doesn't feel rushed. A singer has time to experience all those suttlties.
Very much a key perspective… SLOW AND SHORT :)
Jeff was a master mimic. His mom said in an interview that, as a kid, he’d memorize entire cartoons. Aligns so much with your approach, Chris. Did he have any training? I’ve not heard anyone comment on that. I even asked Jimmy, who spent some time with him, and he did not know. Maybe studying his dad’s albums and Zep was enough.
I don't think he had, many of the "experimental" things he does with his voice (cracking f ex. ) are things you often train away
SO incredibly helpful, thank you
Now we're getting to the good stuff.
Masterpiece!
One of the most influential for me for sure!
This really helped my understanding of jeff's voice. However I realy wanna understand the high mixed voice, it looks so effortless when you do it. Your high vocals reminds me of Gppd Tiger's vocalist, Elliot Coleman, who is also a huge Jeff Buckley fan
super helpful, good video, Chris...thanks!
what a good video, thanks!!
Amazing vídeo🤘✨
Please do more of Jeff Bucley
Esse som, ao vivo, é uma das coisas mais lindas e também com notas mais altas. Jeff simplesmente uma das vozes mais marcantes e geniais de todos os tempos.
Please do more videos on Jeff Buckley !
Would love a reaction him performing live
I adore Jeff buckley, I listened to Ramble On the other day and hadn't realized, sounds just like Jeff in the beginning! Thanks for the video Chris, But why haven't you done a video on Jim Morrison yet?
Someday, I’ll do a Morrison video!
@@chrisliepe awesome! Really love your videos man, I'm all about exploring the limits of my voice and you always put it together so poetically
Hi Chris!
Jeff Buckley my most influential singer / song writer. One of the best!
Next vocal analysis suggestion, the alien voice of Dimash Kudaibergen.
Great content Chris!
Cheers from Portugal!
🙏🤟🖖
Hey, Chris! Thanks for the video. Would be nice to see some love for David Byrne on here some time too.
You, me, and my brother are the only three males i've ever heard that could match Jeff Buckley this well. Age 25 I could do Cornell and sing his Badmotfinger front to back. Age 30 I began to try to learn to mimic Jeff Buckley and it took me everyday for two years before I could passable do 90% of what Jeff did. And just like you slowing his transitions down as he moves from chest to head to mixed and back again was the only way I could do it. I was never really able to match all his transitions in his quicker tempo songs.
Masterful singing. Incompatible.
Love it!! So much. I'm interesting of lenny Kravitz song, it ain't over till it's over performance, what is it?? Head voice? Mixed voice?? I'm so confused
Haha!
Got the "kissing" pun!
Well, now you gotta do Grace too
Forgot how good this bass player is. Speaking of Bass players, well bass players who sing, I am gonna keep asking for dUg Pinnick and add Glenn Hughs.
Glenn would make a very good video!
Chris, please consider analyzing any song by the Cocteau Twins. I’m interested in hearing your take on Elizabeth Fraser’s vocal style.
Have you ever thought about uploading your videos to Nebula as well as UA-cam? A few of the other great music educators on UA-cam like Adam Neely and 12 Tone are on there.
at 15:37 you morphed into Russel brand 😂☠
Hey Chris, it would be awesome if you could do Aaron Lewis of Staind sometime in the near future 🤘
Ya, that would be cool!
great video..... curious what you think of Jimmy Gnecco, your Jeff Buckley reminds be a lot of Jimmy.
Jimmy is one of my favs!!
hello! could you react or analyze Ben harper live at hollywood bowl? it's amazing! Thanks
@3:19 sounds exactly like Ben Shapiro lmao. anyway, great video Chris
Chris what’s a good exercise to specifically get that sort of yodelly fast vibrato that you and Jeff do
I have some vibrato exercises that will help you develop this kind of engagement in my course Discover Your Voice! You can request an invite at chrisliepe.com. :)
Do you believe having an insight on how to sing or how to produce can make enjoying music ever so difficult? I feel like so, so often I find myself distracted by all the nuances in the voice and production that I can barely follow where the song is going, especially lyrically. To be honest, I don't think I've ever truly lived music as people say; I guess a pinch of blissful ignorance could come a long way.
I feel like this level of examination allows me to enjoy appreciate and experience in a profound way!
Comment for da algorithm
Streak count: 174
Can you please make a vocal analysis on the band karnivool?
3:25 Is your soft palate lowered or raised here? I think it's raised.
So when im starting a high note in head voice, i double check my compression, start adding support and get a much more powerful sound, but then i can't bring it back down to chest without breaking. Am i just making a gassed up head voice note and not actually mixing?
Going the other way IS challenging and really needs to be felt out. It sounds like you're doing things right though! Keep feeling out the balances when going back to quiet. That is HARDER in most cases and in most places in our range!
i love jeff buckley as a singer and even as a songriwriter/composer. more jeff buckley please, chris. especially this one, it's so hauntingly beautiful. one of my fav: ua-cam.com/video/IRfhAIbD5o0/v-deo.html
11:03 😂😂
🤠👍
Please review Muse's Matt Bellamy!!!
I’ve done quite a bit of Matt Bellamy on the channel! Search the in the style of playlist! :)
First!
Jeff was James Douglas Morrison of the 90's
Dude I think you over analyze these videos. did you ever think that's just the way he sings with out even thinking about it?
