When you really listen to any Jeff Buckley vocal performance, you realize within the first couple seconds that there is an overwhelming amount of detail and nuance present in every phrase.
What's more... Everything he does sounds so improvised and off-the-cuff. It makes learning and internalizing the Jeff Buckley way of singing frustrating and unapproachable if you don't know how to listen to Jeff Buckley. ...If you don't know the right ways to be musically inspired and vocally energized.
Let's go through one of the greatest Jeff Buckley studio performances of all time and appreciate it for the detail and possibility it presents! Let me show you how you can take some of what Buckley does and inform your own vocal inspiration!

For anyone that really wants to get a feel for Jeff's vocals, go listen to his live performances ! Even in the same songs he doesn't sing or play it the same way each time. Listen to the inflections he makes in each one, that should give you a hint that even you don't need to copy everything he does exactly. In my opinion, that's something that the best musicians do. It's their ability to adapt and improvise.

Dude, as someone who is only 3 years younger than JB and started listening to him on XRT when I lived in Wrigleyville (and I’m a former vocalist-mom of a 10yo now, so haven’t gigged in forever!), you’ve got the closest ability to replicate Jeff Buckley’s tone and emotion. NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE TO DO. Very impressed. Who knew 25 years later, his music would still have such a profound impact on my life as well as millions of others. Timeless. There has never been another Jeff Buckley and after all this time, it’s hard to imagine there ever will be. Jeff vowed to never get into drugs or substances like his dad and he lived up to that til his tragic drowning. He was able to keep that vow. He had the equivalent of ONE glass of wine in his toxicology report when he was swept away by the undertow of the water from that tugboat that stole his life too soon. Yet the irony of the foreshadowing of his death in so many of his lyrics was-just-indescribable. Thank you for keeping him alive.

Wow... my introduction to this guy was an analysis on Thom Yorke & Jeff Buckly was one of my favorite singer song writers. Grace was amazing... I just grieve over what was lost by his untimely passing. Of what could hav been what would hav been. Most younger people are missing out as so many have never experienced Jeff's music & pristine vocal ability The emotion in his voice ...

Chris, your unapologetic approach to the freedoms of creating music are refreshing to say the least. Yes, technique can play a big part in the process but I'm a firm believer in just letting it happen. As you seem to be as well. I do my own thing for sure but Buckley and Cornell have been enormous influencers for my own writing. Thanks for another killer episode and knocking it out if the park yet again. "Play the music and play it loud" Jeff Buckley...

also one of my favorites by Jeff. My favorite, vocally, is Everybody Here Wants You from his post-mortem album. Great insight on the Robert Plant reference. From what ive been told, both Plant & Buckley had a LOT of influence on their stylings from female jazz vocalists, so that makes sense.

Chris, your influences are really the greatest, that's why you're such a good vocalist and a good vocal coach. Chris Cornell and Jeff Buckley are the most creative song writers and vocalists, and I think that if they had not written their own music, their vocals would not have shined as much.

Ya know Chris, the ability for a singer to find their voice in slower songs verses faster songs is pretty crucial dont ya think cuz, the singer doesn't feel rushed. A singer has time to experience all those suttlties.

Jeff was a master mimic. His mom said in an interview that, as a kid, he’d memorize entire cartoons. Aligns so much with your approach, Chris. Did he have any training? I’ve not heard anyone comment on that. I even asked Jimmy, who spent some time with him, and he did not know. Maybe studying his dad’s albums and Zep was enough.

You, me, and my brother are the only three males i've ever heard that could match Jeff Buckley this well. Age 25 I could do Cornell and sing his Badmotfinger front to back. Age 30 I began to try to learn to mimic Jeff Buckley and it took me everyday for two years before I could passable do 90% of what Jeff did. And just like you slowing his transitions down as he moves from chest to head to mixed and back again was the only way I could do it. I was never really able to match all his transitions in his quicker tempo songs.

Do you believe having an insight on how to sing or how to produce can make enjoying music ever so difficult? I feel like so, so often I find myself distracted by all the nuances in the voice and production that I can barely follow where the song is going, especially lyrically. To be honest, I don't think I've ever truly lived music as people say; I guess a pinch of blissful ignorance could come a long way.
