Any mention of Pen y Fan brings back happy memories for me of being at a grammar school in Newport & a member of the walking society. We had many great walks in this area ! 😎

Lets look at the wider thing here - the Car Park at Pont ar Daf is owned by the National Trust who have to fund an apocalyptic amount of cash to maintain the walks all around the area including all the way up to Pen Y Fan, the car parks, toilets, visitor centre and staff on hand. If you have been there recently there is much work going on the build a huge new car park to accommodate visitors so they dont have to park on verges or in the perilous layby half a mile away. People moaning about having to pay £7.50 for all day parking need an absolute slap. You have the opportunity for a safe parking area, facilities to boot, lovely snack bar then the climb to Pen Y Fan all for £7.50. If thats an issue for you then my advice would be to just stay at home and be very bored.

As this is National Trust, I am assuming that National Trust members such as myself it is free. As other National Trust venues are?
I visit Pont ar Daf car park regularly. Where the bigger car park is now used to be woodland and we used to camp there for our weekend event. When the car park was smaller, cars parked on the grass verges of the main road. Very dangerous.
I believe in there being a charge. £7.50 for the day is not expensive in today's parking society. Just to park in Bradgate Park in Leicestershire is £4 for the day.
Depending on how quick you climb 'The Fan', you could be talking a few hours. Do the Horseshoe route and you are talking all day.

They should rename it the Bill Gates Walk at those prices.
