I am 60 and have been playing in bands and running sound forever. Dude you are great to watch and pick up stuff. Thanks for your passion and expertise. You might add a lapel mic but other than that ,, you rock :)
I just got my first FOH/PM gig on a tour and your videos have been helping me so much to prepare. Mainly your AES50 videos. This one had lots of cool tips as well! Thanks for having such great content man!
I had to sacrifice another open channel on my XR18 to do this, the XR18's FX bus does not have compression option as with the input channels 😭. Is it worth ducking delay in the similar way? That would mean sacrificing a third channel.
If you have multiple vocals though this would probably be more difficult because you would have to do individual reverbs for each vocalist. You could send to bus but then if someone is still singing when one person stops, the reverb will still be compressed
This is not real ducking because you compress send to reverb. You must compress reverb return for real ducking. Problem is that returns donot have compresors. For real ducking effect you must: 1. send vocal to FX bus 2. remove fx bus from LR 3. send FX return tu stereo bus 4. remove FX return from LR 5. compress FX on stereo bus channel 6. set vocal channel as triger for compressor 7. turn on LR on bus. For multiple vocals must use multiple FX and buses. Every vocal must have separate FX and stereo bus.
Great vid. Thanks for the tip but you said when you are EQ-ing the highs out of the reverb for the s's and t's, that you should go to the "returns", but I think u meant to say the " reverb sends" channel
No, what i meant and what i showed in the video are the returns that come back from the effect into the mix. The send is the bus that goes into the effect. You can eq the sends bus, but i prefer doing it on the returns
@JoshSingsBW yeah just make sure the decay time isn't too long and eq the reverb return channel to remove the distracting high and low frequencies and it's enough. The ducking trick is just to use a ridiculously big reverb without it getting in the way
Hi guys! I'm sharing my method of doing this, the better way of proper sounding ducking reverb.. supposedly/generally/logically you need to "key" the compressor from FX return channel, key it from a single vocal ch or vocal group bus. but the FX return doesn't have compressor or even a gate to do chaining. but the cons of this method is only sidechained/ducked reverb cant be sent to singer wedge or monitoring IEM. Now my method on side chaining using M32 console specially is: firstly for example, Buss 13 is a plate vocal reverb. return 1L & 1R the reverb return feeding to the mains. now we start routing ; 1.make one stereo Group Bus that will be called Vocal Reverb Bus ( buss 11 and 12) link it to be Stereo bus. 2.go to FX return 1&2 deselect master LR . so it will not be heard on master bus/out . 3.from FX return 1&2 route it to group 11&12 (stereo bus) . 4.that bus will fed the reverb to the mains. 5.from that reverb bus go to compressor set the key source > Bus 13. now adjust the compression to taste. you will hear clearly the vocal ducked down and recovers back up. clear separation. -Fahmi@Bangsar-
Do you want only one channel to trigger the compressor or do you want any channel in the vocal bus to trigger that compressor? It depends on what you want to achieve
Yes I'm ducking the send bus. You can think of the FX Returns as a special kind of channel that has limited functionality but it's not a bus it's a channel that has only a virtual input
@Daniel Kharrat hmm that did not sound the same for me. I set it up today running the FX back thru another stereo bus, and compressing that. I used the original send bus as the key. That sounded like authentic reverb ducking - very nice.
It's from Joe Gilder's EP "AMEN" the song is called "fearfully and wonderfully made" if you search for it on UA-cam I'm sure you can find a link to download the multitracks
@@danielkharrat Thanks Daniel Unfortunately the link no longer exists, can you upload a link, I really liked the sound your're mixing with the reverbs on x32, those vocals, seem to be a good basis for configuring the effects in a live mix
Hmm... although it was free I'm not sure if I'm allowed to distribute it but here's a link to a bunch of free multitracks from the channel Produce Like A Pro producelikeapro.com/blog/happy-new-year-2022-2/
You can search on UA-cam for the "produce like a pro" channel. Just search something like "produce like a pro free multitracks" and you'll find a ton. Now these are studio recordings not live gigs but they are still very useful to practice mixing
Hey, can you sidechain the reverb with multiple key input ? For example if you have more than one singer Or do you recommand to send them back vocals to another reverb send

thank you very much brother, I greet you from Azerbaijan and thank you
I've learned SO MUCH from you in the last two days, applying these techniques on my XR18, thank you!
Really smart, I've never heard of something like compressing a reverb thank you!

Amzing dude!
Great work Daniel. I'm Newman from Ghana. You have enlightened me a lot
Simple and clear my brother" thumbs up!
Great video and really helpful! I couldn't get a grasp on how the setuper works but it's all clear now.
Excellent Idea with Comp'g the Reverb...

You don't need to do it. This is just something extra. You can still dial in the effects without any ducking and you'll be just fine
If you have multiple vocals though this would probably be more difficult because you would have to do individual reverbs for each vocalist. You could send to bus but then if someone is still singing when one person stops, the reverb will still be compressed

Nice tricks - Thanks!
I learned new thing 😅
Will this apply for the MR18 as well? Please make a video for MR18 reverb tricks🙏🏽
No you can't do the reverb ducking on the mr18 because there's no compressor on the fx bus or the return
@danielkharrat I see. Any tips you getting a good reverb vocal using the MR 18?
@JoshSingsBW yeah just make sure the decay time isn't too long and eq the reverb return channel to remove the distracting high and low frequencies and it's enough. The ducking trick is just to use a ridiculously big reverb without it getting in the way
@@danielkharrat Thank you! Your videos are great!
hello! is it possible to use such settings in the xr18 for a good sounding reverb?
@@ЗорянеСяйво-т6я yes you have the same effects in the xr18

Now my method on side chaining using M32 console specially is:
firstly for example,
Buss 13 is a plate vocal reverb.
return 1L & 1R the reverb return feeding to the mains.
now we start routing ;
1.make one stereo Group Bus that will be called Vocal Reverb Bus ( buss 11 and 12) link it to be Stereo bus.
-Fahmi@Bangsar-
Would it make sense to select a vocal bus or individual vocal channel as the source to trigger the reverb compressor?
Do you want only one channel to trigger the compressor or do you want any channel in the vocal bus to trigger that compressor? It depends on what you want to achieve
@@danielkharrat I think he mean every channel on the vocal bus.
Amazing 😉 please can you do more videos in effect..
Yes
Are you ducking the reverb send bus? The reverb return on the X32 doesn't allow for compression.
Yes I'm ducking the send bus. You can think of the FX Returns as a special kind of channel that has limited functionality but it's not a bus it's a channel that has only a virtual input
