- On Monday, Toronto police chief Myron Demkiw addressed the backlash they've been facing after Toronto police made headlines last week for an officer's suggestion that residents leave their car keys by the front door to avoid a home invasion, seemingly to let criminals more easily steal their vehicle without confrontation.
"We're certainly aware of the backlash. That's something that happened in the in the context of a community meeting many weeks ago now. And I think the service has been very clear. We have a number of crime prevention tips that we provide. We publish them quite broadly," Demkiw said.
Demkiw reiterated that the department is actively working to apprehend those who are committing these types of crimes and hold them accountable. In the meantime, residents are encouraged to take matters into their own hands by cutting back hedges, ensuring good lighting, and parking cars in garages to prevent such criminal activity.
The Toronto Police Service has said home invasions and break-ins related to auto thefts rose 400 per cent last year.

This is Canada now. This is not the country I grew up in. Now, we are nuisances for the government whenever we complain about their failures. It used to be that when you failed at your actual job, you had better be able to explain why, change for the better and actually make it right. Now they sneer at the people complaining.
My truck was stolen December 13th. Not once have I had any update or anything from the police. I know where my truck is through my own "detective" work. The police won't do anything.
We're getting good value for our tax money: no public safety to speak of, despit $1+ Billion annual budget. We're a suckers' nation.

Guaranteed, here is their response come budget time: “We just need more resources to do our job, we are so stretched thin and underfunded.” They’ll ask for like a 15% raise, spend it all on rainbow decals for their cars and community liaison positions, and crime will go up. And they’ll come back the next year and ask for more.
It would be cheaper and likely way more effective for the City to build gun ranges, and issue pistols and ammunition to the citizens so they can be equipped and trained, rather than fund the police department at this point.

I would invite all the car thieves in Toronto to travel to Chief Demkiw's residence and take him up on his offer of 'zero resistance'. According to him he'll just give you the keys.....don't believe me, he said it....
I think his suggestion is of good faith, I mean what can he do? a lot of the issue is of national level decision. the goverment chose to ignore the only port that export the vehicles and explicitly make at home self defense expensive and legally complicated.
