Biking Pennsylvania: Searching for the Elusive Rhododendrons on PA's Lehigh Valley Gorge Trail

When you ride this trail you can't help but notice Rhododendron bushes EVERYWHERE. We figured the bloom must be spectacular, but we haven't seen anyone's video documenting it. We've been trying for three years to catch the bloom. Is the third time the charm? You'll have to watch to find out.

Well…. After three different trips to this trail to try and catch them I was getting a little frustrated. Luckily we didn’t go out of our way - we were heading to Easton, PA to ride a couple of trails. Thanks for watching. We hope to “see” you again on our next adventure.

There had been big rains the day before and filled up all the nearby rivers. We went on from here to ride the D&L in Easton and the water was super high there.

It's definitely a challenge catching the rhododendrons in bloom! This is my second season working on the trains that run through Lehigh Gorge, and I have yet to catch them in full bloom, just the occasional one or two like you did.
I also bike that trail often, and have an unfortunate update to share with you. The beautiful new parking area at White Haven (which just opened about a year and a half ago) is now closed for approximate 4 years. They're going to be replacing the I-80 overpasses and already have all the construction equipment staged in the parking area below. The good news is the overflow parking lot on the west side of the trail (accessible from Route 940) will remain open throughout construction, as will the parking at the trailhead north of there in White Haven itself. The trail will remain mostly open, especially during the day on weekends, though it sounds like weekday closures will be common. I believe the restrooms will remain open as well. If you plan future trips here, I'd recommend keeping an eye on the D&L Trail's website for up-to-date information. Also, our railroad has said that our monthly Bike Trains will still run as the state has promised to keep the trail open on those weekends.
Hopefully this won't deter you from coming back again. The Rockport parking area is always a good alternative as well. And I wish you the best of luck in catching those elusive rhododendron blooms!

Hi. Thanks so much for sharing that this might be a lost cause for us. We've tried 3 times so far. Sad to hear that the White Haven parking area is closed for a long time. But the trail is still a beautiful ride and if we had to, we'd just start in Jim Thorpe and go both ways! Thanks for watching.

Just found your channel, watched a few videos, what a treasure. What kind of ebikes do you have? You seem to get a lot of range out of the battery.

We have Gazelle Ultimate C8’s. They are rated at getting 90 miles/charge if you stay in the lowest assist level. We’ve never been more than 65 miles and had plenty of battery left. Thanks for watching.

When were you there? I live about 45 min. from the White Haven trailhead, and my rhododendron blooms end of May/beginning of June.

We’ve been there 3 times over several years - mid June, late June and the week after the 4th July. We are thinking that the bloom isn’t as big as we want it to be because they are wild and don’t get the care and feeding our home Rhodies get.
