  • thanks for watching ✨ Welcome to yet another Sunday Chat!! I can't believe we are already at number 3. I hope you enjoy this one! In this heart to heart chat we talk about: darker winter days, my at-home somewhat healthy but inexpensive hot chocolate recipe, a dating storytime (!!), beginning to learn that money ins't everything, my thoughts on friendship and growing up and how it can become more difficult to feel like you are being a good friend, plus some money/spending things I don't understand... how do you fly first class? who is buying that sweater??

I actually quit a high paying job earlier this year and so many of friends don't get it. They asked why I left a job that paid me $360k in one year and honestly, money isn't everything. I'm happier now making less than a 1/3 of that.

What also blows my mind is when influencers buy these massive million dollar homes and as soon as they move in, are able to fill it with all the high end expensive furniture. Most people would need to save up a little after purchasing a home to fill it with the furniture they like

omg THIS!! when i firsed moved out on my own i was blown away at how expensive it is to fill an apartment with even just the basics like silverware and a shower curtain 😂 it took me months to furnish with mostly used fb marketplace stuff (my fave for real!)… I don’t understand how they do it. Either crazy cash flow or big debt haha

    • @rebekkaroe
      @rebekkaroe Рік тому

I'm wondering the same! Even with buying things cheap or from FB Marketplace, eBay etc, I'm guessing you'd spend at least 5-10k to furnish a new apartment. And that would be the absolute minimum I'd say.. 😳

I often suspect that they're sponsored, especially if they film. Yass, I discovered mint lattes last year and became obsessed. But when the Christmas season was over I wanted to make it myself. I ended up making my own mint syrup because I just couldn't find ready made in the stores! Great chat! 😂🧡😂👏🎈

I really hope these Sunday chats continue cause I've been loving them 💕 I would never sacrifice my mental and physical health in order to earn a ton of money. The most precious things for me are health & time ,these cannot be replaced! Also I've always seen cute clothes from revolve and checked them out but they are so expensive for sure...but a lot of young people come from super rich families so it is possible that the money they spent on these clothes are not even theirs. I've met a lot of people that wouldn't be able to afford anything without their parents and if that's how they want to live good for them I'm not judging.

As a student in the US, sometimes I wish I hadn’t left home. It appears my friends who stayed at home to pursue their careers are doing great, and I’m still stuck trying to get a good job and or work permit even with all my upskills. Going home too doesnt seem feasible at this point.
I know we all have different journeys but it’s still hard and I always feel so behind.
Definitely not working 80 hours a week if I had the option. I’m a workaholic but I’m not going that far.

Thank you for mentioning that you don’t think being money driven is bad. I feel guilty very often for sort of living life the same way you said you do, being focused on making money and spending it how you want because of money scares when you were younger. Money was definitely the biggest thing my parents fought about because there was never enough. Now as an adult I could definitely be better with money, and I am learning, but it is something I think about every single day.

I feel like if I had the choice, I would want to work more hours for a specific amount of time (no more than a few years lol) until I get to a specific amount of money saved, very much inspired by the FIRE movement, I'd love to get to a place where work was set at my own pace maybe in 5-10 years but to get there, I think I'd be down to work more hours now to be financially comfortable enough to work a part time or contract job in the future and maybe take some time just with no work for long periods of time (like taking a few months off every year lol), loved these topics!

As a former flight attendant, I can tell you the following about first class:
Yes, it's expensive! But many people get discounts because of all the miles they have collected. Or sometimes they get upgraded.
I personally have also grown up never even considering flying first class! But, I have to say, I have flown business class (which is kind of like first class on my airline) to fly to where I was going to start working on duty. So, I have had the experience, and I must say: it is so much more comfortable and quiet. And the biggest advantage is, you can rest. You can actually fully lie down and sleep. So I do get that people fly first class if they need to get to a meeting or need to arrive rested because with first class it's actually an option to sleep well while in economy class it's not really.
My 2 cents on this are: if you can afford it and find a good deal, it might be worth it for a long distance flight because long days of traveling can be very exhausting! But for short flights it's never worth it. ✈️

New viewer here. I've always been baffled at how YT'ers are living in luxury apartments in NYC, then buy all new stuff, and six months later sell stuff, move into another luxury apt and buy all new stuff again. Not judging but it's like, "what, how, what?!!" I think it's great people in their 20s are able to carve out careers with social media (that didn't exist in when I was in my 20s) but I also think there is something in the "struggle." Just a little bit. I could only afford very basic apartments with roommates and a LOT if not all hand-me-down furniture and kitchenware. I think it will be interesting to see 15-20 years later as social media may shift how influencers and able to uphold their standard of living, meaning, should they have saved more just in case. I also think a lot of people watching influencers are more susceptible to getting into financial trouble because they are wanting to keep up with luxury living and luxury things. Again, it's not judging but simply just observing from afar.

Hi Zoe! I love the topics discussed on this chat! I am personally watching these chats on Monday mornings as I am drinking my coffee. I'm not lying when I say that these videos make me look forward to Monday mornings hahah.. On the subject of first class, I never flew first class (don't understand it, can't justify the price..) but I did buy first class train tickets once (which is not comparable by any means, it was only 15 euros above the regular price) but, I kid you not, I made the biggest deal out of it! We were served free coffee and a pastry, and of course the service was very friendly, and seats were more comfy. I swear I talked about this trip for days afterwards hahah I posted multiple IG stories haha but I don't think I'll ever justify flying first class, unless it's an upgrade, or exchangeable with airline points...

Influencers and first class. Maybe they get those flights as compensation as well. Maybe you - one day - will be flying 1st class, when you gotten your finances in order. You’re just not there yet.
Also ask those people - if they’ve ever studied abroad in Australia - and then be thankful your parents and you haven’t prioritized flying 1st class.
And 400$ sweaters don’t sit well with your dog. That dog ist gold - I know you wouldn’t change that for the world 😊

First class depends. Domestically it’s not super expensive. I used my miles for 75% and paid the rest to fly from Seattle, WA to San Jose, CA to pick up my cat and it was the best decision. Not that 2A was fancier but boarding process was so much nicer and I made it to my flight despite being super late.

Regarding Revolve I’m also blown away by their prices and I’m thinking maybe people just use solutions like Klarna? Or a credit card? If not I guess people on average are richer than I would imagine 😅

  • @stefflores

Definitely would prefer to find a way to work less and make more money cause ultimately I don't want to work. It definitely is HARD to be a good friend; most people aren't good friends and it's something not enough people realize or admit. IDK what the solution is but I feel like it's probably a mix of time management and also prioritizing it almost like chores, sounds crappy to put it that way but if you want true friendships you really have to make time in your schedule for them. And I feel like more people than we realize are actually putting themselves in debt to buy the things they can't actually afford just to stunt on social media or feel good about themselves like the first class tickets and $600 sweaters.

Its so funny because my upbringing was different from yours , my parents were poor but never fought about money and didn’t put a focus on it when it came to us picking careers ( though it was very obvious to us that we were poor). So I didn’t consider it a factor at all when picking a careeer path😅 I actually judged people for havign that as a factor. Now it’s a HUGE factor for me. Security and safety matter and are intertwined with money in the society we live in. I wish they had explained salaries to us, after tax! And gave us realistic budgets. It’s so hard to know as a teen what 10,000 of dollars actually is and how far ( or not so far) it can take you!

On the money is everything mentality, I grew up thinking the same but in my case in my family mi parents would say: we don’t have the money for it or we cannot afford it. Now whenever I have the financial safety, I tend to spend it since my mentality is still there in the fact that I CANNOT AFFORD IT. So it’s actually shifting that mentality. And having affirmations such as: I save because I deserve the feeling of safety. Because I deserve peace. Hope it helps!

The first home is actually the only one you have to save for! For us, we got lucky and found a cheaper than average place in st henri in the pandemic. Randomly got lucky and got it! Then, not even a year later, it was worth 100k more. We asked the bank to give us the difference in a loan, they gave us a percentage ( based on a whole bunch of factors) for us to use for wtv( renovations, paying off higher interest loans, etc) and we could use it on a down payment on a rental property if we wanted to!! It’s so wild because it would be all debt and it’s a bigger risk ( if that property doesn’t get rented out) but I feel like many people don’t realize that! You just keep building and renting and owning if you wanted to after the first! ( so long as it goes up in value of course)

I would never work 80 hrs a week. My sweet spot is like 30 hrs max. We need quality time with our family, friends and relaxing makes us even more productive.

JS is a smart man because he hits the nail right on the head about people wanting to put in a flex show. Those people who show off their stupid choices on buying homes, the clothes they get at a designer store, cars, and flying first class are showcasing how economically they are doing better than anyone else. It's that attitude "I want to show off I'm better off then most people" which may be true but that's them putting everyone else beneath them. Wealth does not make someone the top of the food chain, it makes them even poorer and not worth much respect. People who are buying houses right now better know what they are doing because once we are deeper into the years of this recession, the same people showing off are now feeling embarrassed of themselves when they realize their money is running dry. Credit cards have the highest interest compared to mortgages and most people end up being poor because of the high interest they pay on $3000 worth of "goods." Just wait Zoe and I expect to see a video revisiting this topic in the future when you see how right JS was. Love you as my lord commands❤.

I think working 80 hours a week for a short time wouldn't be a problem but definitely not long term. Maybe I'd do it for a year to become financially stable and then go to 60 and then to 40 so it's not such a huge cut at once.

I totally feel similar on the friend front. What my friends and I have started doing is that we will get together at someones house and watch shows together. We are able to be with each other, experience something together and also not spend a ton of money. It allows you to relax but also hang out with your friends as well.

Nowadays I have friends I haven't seen in YEARS. House, kid, hubby, work, living far away from them, covid, etc... Now I'm home with my baby and one of my friends is expecting a baby so I can't wait to have playdates. It's the only time I can have with friends. Before I was the same in uni.

I think a lot of people go into debt to flex. I was also talking to my bf about this and we think it's also a case of people trying to become like other people, aspiring to live a certain life, and in some cases even trying to find happiness. Also, my cousin showed me that all you need is a loaded husband to be able to fly first class all the time. Lol

omg YESSS Revolve has always been so confusing to me too! Like with the size of the boxes most of these influencers get they have to be giving them like a $5k+ budget monthly given the massively inflated price of their products. I don't know a single person who owns Revolve that didn't get it as an influencer. Make it make sense!!

Not only am I priced-out but I'm also sized-out of Revolve so it's always been an automatic "nope" from me

I have solo much to comment about everything, I'll try :)
    1. Hi Zoe! 😁
    2. I'm feeling sad and overwhelmed but trying to process everything and focus on things to make easier the day.
    3. I'll search this video on winter! Wanna taste that!
    4. I bought a sunset lamp to the shorter days, it's make my house like is always golden hour mood.
    5. Great memories, you can make new ones. Try to have you own traditions that you like and repeat every year, sure, it's complicated, but it nice to have you own untraditional traditions on this season haha
... I'll keep it going on another comment 🤭😁✨

      6. Don't know how it taste the peppermint but I'm curious 🧐😌
      7. Money isn't everything but it helps, I grew up in the same family's dynamic, I have so much difficulty with money still, but I'm aware of that.
      8. I just put my sleep and me time first. I can do money working more BUT if I don't live my life, what I'm doing here living to work, isn't worth.
      ... It continues

      9. OMG it makes me anxious the topic "good friend" cus I always want to be that with everyone, but it's always very very difficult. I prioritize myself and I'm struggling with the guilt everytime but I think is the best for my mental health.
      10. I'm a people pleaser, thats why. But I need time for me or my things. I struggle with texting people, but today everyone knows that who I am, I don't text o call everyday but I will be there if you need me.
      11. Growing up it's difficult on every aspect
      12. I just have a conversation with my bff and I was wondering the same thing, were are they getting the money to do sooooo much stuff and buying so much stuff. My bff told me "credit cards exist and they are in so much debt perhaps". We don't know how is their life outside social media, it can be anything.
      13. Comparison is the thief's of joy (or something like that) everyone have their own inside battles.
      14. Some people have money, I saw people giving on twitch 1000usd to their streamer 🤷 it's crazy salse! 👀
