good luck, We just did our scratch board tonight. She really enjoys doing the front nails. i have to be careful she gets them even and not just the 2 front nails but also the 2 side nails. Thank you. Joyce
We’ve made a board and It works great. Both dogs learned pretty quick how to scratch because they already knew the command “dig dig” and “other paw”. But how do you deal with the dewclaws and the rear feet? my dog is hyper reactive with his feet even a Dremel is too much
Yes, I agree the dew claws and rear feet are difficult. i use the LuckyTail Dog Nail Grinder to trim the dew claws and the rear feet. This is a link for more information about the LuckyTail. luckytail.com/regular-dog-claw-grinding-device-aff-bundle-1a9w5s/?aff=136 Also a video comparing 4 different nail grinders. LuckyTail, Casfuy and dremel. ua-cam.com/video/akwh9D9KUqY/v-deo.html Thank you. Joyce
@@DiamondDogTraining thanks. I tried to desensitize him to a dremel. When I finally got to just barely touching the top of his nail, he levitated. Not sure what to do, except keep trying. I saw a method of doing the back by having the dog out front feet on a step or couch and having back feet on the Board. Sigh. He’s a big guy
Tima, Nicky is the most difficult dog I have ever owned to do her nails. In the beginning, she would freak and scream just for touching her feet. She was 3 years old when I adopted her. I had to find some way to do her nails . So that is how I decided to make the scratch board. Now I still had her rear feet and the dew claws. I will start to teach Nicky to scratch backward and see if I can get her to do it . But for now I would encourage you to watch my videos on desensitization for Nicky and her back feet. Lots of chicken and touch the nails. Also consider the LuckyTail dog nail grinder. It is so quiet, you can just barely hear it. This grinder has made a world of difference in grinding Nicky’s back feet and Dew claws. Look at the video comparing the LuckyTail to the Casfuy. It is new. Just a couple weeks ago. I will send you a comment when I am successful in teaching Nicky how to scratch with her back feet and tell you how I did it. Wish me luck. Joyce
yes, every dog is different. But patience will have all of your dogs using the scratchboard. so much better than cutting or dremel their nails. Thank you, Joyce
My dog will only scratch with his right paw. I have been trying to teach him left and right paw but for some reason he will only do his right. Any tips?
Every dog will use 1 paw more than the other. Nicky also does that. I turned the board and switched it to her other side. She just lifted the paw a little. Did not come near the board. I clicked and fed her a bunch of chicken. She raised it again and I clicked and fed a bunch again . You can also teach paw (shake hands) before you introduce the board. Then you can physically lift the paw and feed as soon as you lift it. You can use different cues . I use paw and other paw after your dog learns to shake hands. Then you can transfer the cue to the board. Let me know if any of these ideas work.
Great video! I have a senior dog who doesnt have strength in his back legs so he sits down a lot. How can I use a scratch board where it looks like they have to stand on their hind legs a lot
I would modify how you hold the board. Most of the time Nicky just stands on 4 feet and scratches with the front feet. You could position your dog to lay in his soft bed and put the scratch board on the bed so your dog could scratch laying down. Just a. Idea. Let me know if it helps. Thank you . Joyce
Home depot, Loews. They have all sizes of boards. you can get a larger board and ask them to cut it if you want to make an extra scratch board. Thank you, Joyce
How that I think about it, cat vs dog ownership have similar features but are still a very different thing, like convergent evolution. Scratching posts, harnesses, flirt poles, sandboxes etc. sry, my two-cups-of-homemade-milk-tea brain with barely an hour of sleep is talking, and I'm prone to philosophy
