  • Curious about how much students living in London spend in a week? UCL History student Nola is here to give you the breakdown.
"London can be quite an expensive city to live in and an aspect that should be taken into account when deciding if UCL (or any other London uni) is the one for you. From my perspective, I am so grateful to be able to live here because, true to the stereotype, there is tons to do here, lots to eat, and plenty of academic/career opportunities. Which I suppose comes at a cost. Now it seems like most students spend around £100 a week, not including rent but I definitely have friends who spend less, maybe around £30 a week. Also not mentioned in this video, but I also have friends with part-time jobs in customer service and online tutoring.” Nola Mak

    £85 pw sounds really unreasonable.
£15-20 on groceries per week is difficult to stick to especially if you include the occasional snacks/drinks. £25-30 is more reasonable.
It is very difficult to find a flat near campus (maybe not even possible anymore) for that kind of budget and if you are further out from campus and can't walk you will be paying around £20 a week extra at least if you are taking the tube (with the railcard discount and bear in mind that the discount only applies at off-peak times) and around £17 extra if you are taking the bus. Being further away from campus does not necessarily guarantee significantly lower rent either unless you are willing to spend an hour a day commuting.
When you add the irregular costs like having to buy a new pair of shoes, clothes, the travel costs to go and get these, haircut, medicine, friends' birthdays, tickets to go back home or away for a couple of days etc. your average costs go even higher.
I'm not sure if the bills were included in the rent cost but if not you need to add around £10-15 per week with this depending on the time of the year. You will be paying more for heating and electricity in winter.
So, if you are making all your meals at home and don't mind spending time commuting etc. you can save a lot of money by compromising on your time and fun. But then what's the point of being in London?

your points are all valid but some people only come to London for the education so having fun is not a requirement

Eating out is a familiar issue, trying to balance between £15 meals and 50p ramen LOL!

Im a first year at UCL right now and I had a contextual offer. I'm a home student, I come from a household under 30K. I worked manual labour all summer to save up £2000 for the year and then got the UCL bursary to help pay for my Oyster card. So no, not everyone there is rich.
