      actually think about an insight chassis. cheap as fuck, steering rack is already electric... i've paid as little as 120 bucks for clean title examples in shit condition, especially the cvt ones, which we don't need anyway...
      rear suspension is already able to tolerate WAY too much weight, so modern ev batteries would be no problem.

      I'd also like to point out, during the 90s the government held electric cars in many fleets. I've seen Chevy S10 pick-up trucks, government built, electric. Believe me, that's a shitty car in today's means, thus, perfect lemon. The average price on this example is roughly $800/$1200 asking, so it's possible.

      @@alecfleming373 with the ev s-10 , getting that 1200 down to 500 would be possible selling off the bed and stock batteries and rear suspension during the conversion to modern batteries. or it could be simpler to just cop a rear-ended 94-97 s10 for basically free and doing the conversion from scratch. especially considering the ev was front drive and probably handled like a civic pulling a trailer full of batteries.

    That's actually a J1772 adapter. And it had never been tested before that 15,000mi road trip. If we ever do it again (sigh, and we will), we'll also have one of the 80A Tesla blocks -- because Teslas chargers almost always work, and we can get twice the power out of them. The first "APU" was a sams club generator, and it did not like being run at capacity inside an engine bay. The big orange trailer rig is a 25k generac "work site" generator. It went to Amelia Island and back without issue. So when we get that exemption to tow a trailer in a race, this thing will dominate other EVs.

    • @EmyrDerfel
      @EmyrDerfel 4 роки тому +2

      Teslas are heavy. Find something old, light and aerodynamic like a Saab Sonnett and you'll need less energy to overcome drag and friction to cruise at a given speed and less energy to accelerate (though you could get about half of that energy back via regen). A track and car combination that allow a good driver to carry momentum through the corners would be ideal, and a driver who lifts before catching traffic rather than racing up to the bumper would be more efficient.
      The $50k may be effectively worth less by the time it happens, but I expect one day there will be an EV lemon that can at least compete on laps.

    • @jfbeam
      @jfbeam 4 роки тому +5

      A great deal of mass can be removed from a Model S. (see also: Spec Model S) But yes, battery swaps are the killer. It would be nearly impossible to build a system to rapidly swap out the 1600lb battery module that wouldn't also be infinitely unsafe. (you do NOT want that module falling out.) Tesla's abandoned plan was quite slow, and not exactly something one could drag around to race tracks. (it's basically a piece of the assembly line.)

    • @JohannesKonow
      @JohannesKonow 4 роки тому +1

      The best thing would be a small helper battery where you could drive the car straight into the new battery. One station to remove the battery, then just enough battery power in the auxiliary to drive to the hot station with some form of quick plug with easy aceess hatch and the battery at the right height. Preferably battery in the front so you can see it too.
      And still this would require a lot of money, and/or time and engineering, to get right.
      And you still have to find a drive train and battery pack for 500 dollars. You can't lax the rules just because it's an EV.

    • @chiseled_face
      @chiseled_face 4 роки тому +4

      @@JohannesKonow Nope, the EV exemptions are what makes it doable. It's just a matter of someone taking the time, and finding the money. The electric motor, batteries, and charging system are exempt from the $500 limit according to the official race rules.
      "3.L.2.a All EV-drive-system chargers, batteries, motors, controllers, connectors, and cables do not count toward the $500 price limit. (To inquire about price exemptions for other EV drive-system components and almost certainly be rejected, contact Lemons HQ.)
      3.L.2.b All mechanical components adapted from ICE vehicles for your build (examples include motor mounts, transmissions, differentials, driveshafts, and suspension components) do count toward the $500 price limit."
      You just have to retrofit a beater with a tesla drivetrain and find a way to swap batteries to win.

    What are the "swapping" rules for the $50k prize. In the early years of formula-e, drivers could switch entire cars. You clearly allow swapping engines and batteries. basically, what parts other than the transponder have to stay with a team entry in order for it to count. I know you have allowed teams to switch cars when the one they brung done blows up. Do they lose their original laps when this happens?

    • @jfbeam
      @jfbeam 2 роки тому

      The spirit of the rules... you can return to the paddock and do anything up to placing the transponder on a different car. In many cases, if your car blows up to the point you have to buy/borrow/steal a different car, you've already wasted hours and can't possibly win, so they usually allow it. Driving into a trailer, moving the transponder to a fully charged and otherwise identical car, while highly amusing, would not be allowed. (even if you could win, which you couldn't.)

      Solar panels on a vehicle won't contribute much since the area's quite small and the panel won't be perpendicular to the sun's rays much, making the effective panel area even smaller.
      If your car weighs under 3000lb, you can use 1.75″ x .095″ tubing for the cage, and you can fit three 18mm cells within the 39.6mm ID of that tubing with a little space left for cell spacers. On the other hand, it's a butt turrible idea, and an EV lemon probably won't be under 3000lb.

      It you want to go the solar route... you'll need over 75 square meters of panels. (and that's with insanely expensive 400w/m2 panels) 18650s are absolutely the worst option. The round shape is volumemetricly inefficient. And the thousands of steel tubes encasing them add up to a significant mass. (Telsa went this way because they were cheap and abundant at the time.)

    So what accomplishment is needed to win the $50k? That wasn't clear. Also, how does budgeting really work with EVs? All those controllers, motors, batteries, very $500 my ass! Others are commenting that EVs are exempt from the budget restrictions (probably because EVs haven't been around long enough for there to be many $500 electric turds), but does that mean someone could just enter a stock straight-from-the-showroom Tesla Model S P100D? What are the rules of what makes an EV a "Lemon" if not the $500 budget (which I feel is ignored by many teams with gasoline cars too)?

    • @Alex_Bessinger
      @Alex_Bessinger 4 роки тому +2

      To win the $50k, you have to win a Lemons race overall.
      The way that the official rules read on the website essentially say that the $500 budget rule still applies to the car itself, but anything EV related (motor, controller, batteries, charger, etc.) are budget exempt.
      Even a showroom fresh Model S wouldn't be able to win, as it can't charge quickly enough (all least not at the track anyways...). Pretty much the only way to win the way I see it is to have multiple battery packs that can be very quickly hot swapped.
      That said, I'd really like to try it, even if it's unlikely I'd win...

      The rules for homologation for Lemons are incredibly rigorous and difficult to fulfill.
      Rule 1: The vehicle must be a car. Or at least something that resembles a car. Unless it doesn't.
      Rule 2: See Rule #1.

      It must be a real, mass-produced car. Tube frames and other boutique production methods (read: timber frames like a Morgan) are not Lemons legal.
