My grandfather, who was in the junkyard/car parts business and could have any car he wanted and knew cars well, loved his solid Peugeot 404 break. It was pale blue with big comfortable leather seats with a column shifter. I was 7 yrs old at the time and one evening we were driving home from a wedding and were pulled over by the cops. The officer came up to the car and noticed that there were 9 of us in the wagon and just burst out laughing! He then just told my grandpa to drive home safely. Great memories in the 404 break.
I love the Peugeot 404, this video reminded me of my childhood with my father and my older brother with it, my father bought it because my brother was loving the Peugeot 404 especially he had just came from France where he was studying, great memories that will never be stopped beating my heart, this was in 1976. Rest in peace my father and my brother.
What memories indeed! As a 16 y.o, growing up in Singapore, I learned to drive in my parent's new (at the time) 1967 404 manual where the column shift pattern was very different from conventional! It was a challenge!
I used have a neighbour when I was growing, about 50 years ago now, who drove nothing but Peugeots, as did his wife. They were very nice people, Hungarian refugees from the 1956 take over by the Soviets, both doctors. They'd see us kids walking home and give us a lift. The Peugeots were very nice cars, very different from the North Americas most of our friend's parents drove. Both are gone now, but not forgotten.
This brought back many fond memories - the best one was the winning bid of $110 for an impounded 1970 404 from St. Kilda City Council in 1990 - superficial scrub and new windscreen later saw us belting across the Nullarbor listening to our ‘whistler’ purring at well over 75 mph - put in 1/2 litre of oil on arrival at Perth which was due to leakage from perished rocker cover grommets (2) What a bargain that car was . . . Endless respect for the 404 - so much so l rebadged the 407sw v6 l now drive with the 404 bonnet badge. I guess the buffs know that the ‘O’ in the badge revealed a hole for a speed-brace & socket in the unlikely event of a broken bonnet release cable . . . Viva la Pugsley 404 !
I played in our broken down 404 in the nineties i remember everything on that dash !! i can even remember the smell of the leather seats in that old car.
The 404 was a very good car indeed, but by far not the best car produced by the french automobile industry... Just think of facel vega, bugatti, avion, delahaye, delage etc...
Thats a lovely 404, but I must confess that my favourite 404 engine is the 1600cc Fuel Injection model which was such a sweet engine giving a lovely power delivery that suited the chassis, and was also much lighter than the diesel so it handled better as well. But the petrol injection model is SO rare, I havn't seen one for decades.
My father did 350000 kilometer in our Black 1966 404 Diesel, these cars wer eindestructable, years later I bought a beautiful first paint 1967 404 XC6, in my sheer stupidity I sold the car after 20+ years. It always struck me how modern and well ahead of their time these cars were very comfortable and quite fast with a 1.6 liter engine, the queen of Africa !
Here in Argentina the Peugeot 404 had an Indenor engine. Indestructible. You could fill the tank with 90% diesel and 10% gasoline and see what a rocket feels like

This was the taxi used in our city Dire Dawa Ethiopia. I think the story is connected to the Rail Way which was established by France. The main station was in Dire Dawa and most of the workers were French men. So the city was dominated by French things. There still are few of these taxis but work only in the airport. Air Passengers pay 50 birr ($1usd) per person or more for these taxis to reach their home or hotel. But these taxis work in the city no more. They are replaced by 3 tyre vehicles called Bajaj commonly. But the Peugeot in this video is noisy. They are silent cars as I remember them.
I’m curious how you went with the gearbox mount. The mount normally fits over the square end of the gearbox when you have a articulation joint that the live axle needs. That doesn’t fit over the back of a BA10/5. Are you using a BA7/5 or a BA10 with the mount behind the joint? Or some other magic solution? Michael
Hi I don't have the car anymore and can't recall which gearbox type it was. It was a gearbox from a 505 grd, as well as the engine which was an indenor xd3. The diff was the original 404. The previous owner installed it, cut a hole for the gearbox in the floor, and deleted column shift. Hopefully this helps a little
I got a question my uncle say it, he bought a Peugeot in 1977 and you can drive it with 3 wheels only. Without the right back wheel. And you can drive it. If this is you car can you tell me if this it's true thank you. Sense me a message or if you do a video tell me.
I got a taxi ride in this model car in Cuba last week. Drove for an hour and a half across the Cuban countryside near Camaguey. It was not as well maintained as your car.
C est une française / anglaise il a mis la commande de boite au plancher . Pourtant il me semble que c était au volant mes parents en ont eu une! Avec la colonne a droite ça ne devait pas passer.
This is s 5 speed manual, the gearbox is from a Peugeot 505, the engine is as well. It was built in South Africa, imported to New Zealand in 1978, and then gearbox and engine replaced legally.

Brilliant mate
Nice car I Love classic Rear wheel drive Peugeots 404 and 504 s Are the best
This car was used as a taxi in my country Malaysia in the 1960s and early 1970s before the crampy Datsun 120Y took over in 1974.😊
Awesome, solid car, huge drum brakes all around, stopped strongly, early ones had worm drive differential.Yes France did make great, reliable cars
If it's a 72 model it should have front discs. The 13in front discs were introduced onto the 1969 model
The only French car my heart has yearned for.
A great old car - had one in the mid 70’s - prone to rust though!
Here in Argentina the Peugeot 404 had an Indenor engine. Indestructible. You could fill the tank with 90% diesel and 10% gasoline and see what a rocket feels like
This is an indenor xd3.
best car in the early seventies
My first job in 1972 gave me a 404 diesel pick up to drive around in to visit clients. I remember how slow it was...
Timeless Pinninfarina lines! Beautiful!
..hello..votre voiture est splendide..et le moteur Indenor..est Magic !! Your car is Splendid .. BRAVO

Wow. Pegu 404 my love❤❤❤❤
Linda maquina, aprendí a conducir en un 404. Soy un poco purista, podrías volver al cambio al volante. Saludos desde Chile ✌️
Did you change the 4-on the steering column gear shift to a 4-on the floor?
5 Speed, gearbox from a Peugeot 505 GRD
I noticed that. Original 404s had their their gear stick mounted on the steering column
The seats are retrofitted? What about the gear shift? Isn’t the shift at the steering column? I vaguely remember my late father’s car being different.
Yes, seats from a 604, gearbox and engine from a 505 Diesel. I bought it like that.
@@PrinceofPeugeot wow, lucky you. This is my dream vintage/ classic car.
