@@chatsandreacts Love u bonny + emily!!! im begging for you to react to holly humberstone's album "paint my bedroom black"... she has really concerning and superior vocals, lyrics, and melodies
I think this album is the reason why some albums like ultraviolence, reputation, and wwafawdwg (billies debut) exist or did well . She started this melancholic dark-synth sound in pop back in 2012 when every song was bright and fun
With 'Tennis Court', Lorde stated at the time she was obsessed with royalty and history, and there's a really pivotal moment in the French Revolution where revolutionaries were locked out of the offical meeting hall so they instead met on a tennis court. So the song can also be referring to that - hey I'm here to rock the music industry, and if you're not going to let me in, we'll just 'go down to the tennis court and talk it up.'
you should 1000% check out The Love Club EP it is SO underrated and really adds to the portrait of this early stage in her career!! the title track kinda extends the narrative of tennis court, but from a slightly later moment where she’s becoming famous and being surrounded by a bunch of social climbers and poking fun at their absurdity and the weird shit they do to be a part of the “love club” of celebrity/fame. just generally so concerning that she wrote these songs at 16 and crazy how they continue to age so well sonically and lyrically
Also, there's a version of Pure Heroine (extended play) and she added the The Love Club EP songs to with. So they definelty live in the Pure Heroine Universe.
@@laramorrison5973 girly have you not heard enough of the public praises ab Lorde herself and especially how Royals/Pure heroine had influenced a whole generation?
Literally all I could think about the whole time watching this was how I used to listen to this album and scroll tumblr between classes my first semester of college 🥺
this album has the vibes of that very especific time around 2013 when teen dystopian books and movies started blowing up like te hunger games, divergent, maze runner etc
also what’s so illegal that on ribs she says “this dream isn’t feeling sweet” which reminds of teenage dream (by katy) and how everyone when they get older wants to feel like a teenager but it’s never that way when your a teen😭🙏. and after pure heroine came out, pop was never the same bubbly pop everything is ok feeling anymore (like teenage dream was😭) AND OLIVIA SAYS IT TOO IN TEENAGE DREAM UGHH.
Lorde's is her stage name, she added the letter e to make "Lord" more feminine, she wanted a strong name with grandeur. She grew up reading poetry (her mum is a poet) and was really interested in royalty and aristocracy. She has always been scarily self aware and wise beyond her years
Thank you for bringing Lorde back into my life!! I never quite grasped her superiority in my younger years but having you break down her albums has truly made her one of my favourite writers/artists!
no actually every relisten confirms this is one of the best albums of all time and definitely the greatest debut of all time and people should study it for centuries
The BRAVERY of you two to upload another Lorde video! We are not worthy!❤ BTW, love this concept of one of you knowing the album and the other reacting. Would love more of these.
the timing of this reaction warms my heart. i just gifted this album to my 15 year old nephew for christmas, who is also getting into taylor and more music in general, because he loves writing and music. the themes that comforted me and that meant so much to lorde (and the world) while she wrote them AT HIS AGE, will live on in the next generation. it's so beautiful and timeless.
Obsessed with this and clicked immediately! But the only correction I would make is that Lorde had definitely written these songs before she released Royals. She had so many songs written before she even got a recording contract. Some of them she wrote at 13 and 14
"Why did she name it Pure Heroine?" I think in many ways, the title "Pure Heroine" is apposite to Lorde herself. In the early 2010s, she was a heroine with a pure message - a message of honesty and humanity that resonated with everyone, from fans to her fellow musicians. And "pure" is often used when a drug is good. So I think it's the juxtaposition of pure heroin (drug) and pure heroine, as the female of hero, because she places herself as the “heroine” of her own narrative/of the words she imagines and sings about.
This album oozes freshman year of college for me. It came out at that time in my life and I had it on repeat. Even just hearing the first few seconds of Royals teleports me back to my dorm room.
Live, Laugh, Love Lorde! I would love a reaction video for “Preacher’s Daughter”, by Ethel Cain from you! It is a concept album and, in my opinion, one of the best albums ever made.
Seeing Ribs live actually changed me. My favorite part is it’s low key a reverse call-and-response where the crowd leads the back and forth and Lorde responds to everyone yelling the lyrics at her
I have always admired Lorde's work since her debut album. It is incredible how a 15/16 year old teenager could write in such a mature and metaphorical way. She truly was a child prodigy! 👏🏻
I manifested a Florence x Taylor colab and it came true, still manifesting a Florence + The Machine album reaction from you gals 😅😊. Dance Fever is a Jack album besties
This album came out during my first semester of undergrad and oh man it was such a wild and amazing time in music. You truly couldn’t go anywhere that summer without hearing Royals and this album was such a moment in time.
this album is, and forever will be, timeless, superior, wonderful, skybound, amazing, beautiful, lovely, interesting, different, and the BEST. you deserve better luck with your Lorde videos!
hey guys! i am one of ur biggest fans. you guys are so interesting to watch and see your theories on songs and it’s so entertaining! i’m a massive swiftie too so watching you guys is so much fun! please see this comment bc ily guys so much ❤
I seriously forgot how much I love this Album!! Such a fun revisit! Also I love the concept of one of you being more familiar with what your reacting too! There is nothing more I love than sharing a song or album I love with my best friend
I haven’t listened to this album FOR A WHILE! It was on repeat for me when it came out and so thank you for reminding me how good it is! I really should go back to some old favorites of mine
I didn't know about the sunrise/light aspect of the 400 lux title! In the Solar Power bonus track "Hold no grudge" she says: "Remember when we woke at dawn Saw the silver sun in your old Citroen?" iirc she said "hold no grudge" is her looking back on past relationships in her life. is that part of the song a possible reference back to 400 lux????
I have always thought of Still Sane being the most truthful of her attitude of fame at that time, where she doesn’t quite know how to deal with it and she’s admitting she’s not totally comfortable yet with what is going to happen but is confident in herself that she will become comfortable, she will understand it, and she will become the best she’s just got to get her head round it first Glory and Gore is the same sort of thing to me but more bolsterous and more convincing herself that she HAS to accept the destruction that comes with fame and that she likes it, that even in her moments where she thinks would she rather be “free”, she reminds herself that now freedom means being on top in the ring so she can do whatever she want
i love how much emily loves 400 lux because SAAAAME !!! i also think the “hollow” lyric really points to maybe how they were feeling as teens in that time. like teens are sad lol & feel hollow & helpless a lot of the time. i think AS a teen listening to this album when it came out you can reaaaaaally understand the throwaway thoughts she (and her friends / boys / etc) was having at the time bc it’s just so on brand for teenagers
i loooove the way the first lyric in the album is “dont you think its boring how people talk” and the last one is “let them talk”
OMG TEA

COMPLETELY agree. Lorde's impact is so underrated, there is soooo much music that is so clearly inspired by her
The dark moody pop girl albums with the black and white covers really did run the early 2010s
Are you sure lana didn’t start it with born to die it was also dark synth pop I mean look at dark paradise
Definitely agreed. Lorde and Lana ushered in a new kind of pop girl sound.
With 'Tennis Court', Lorde stated at the time she was obsessed with royalty and history, and there's a really pivotal moment in the French Revolution where revolutionaries were locked out of the offical meeting hall so they instead met on a tennis court. thats what i thought when I read French Revolution in history class i was literally singing this song
you should 1000% check out The Love Club EP it is SO underrated and really adds to the portrait of this early stage in her career!! the title track kinda extends the narrative of tennis court, but from a slightly later moment where she’s becoming famous and being surrounded by a bunch of social climbers and poking fun at their absurdity and the weird shit they do to be a part of the “love club” of celebrity/fame. just generally so concerning that she wrote these songs at 16 and crazy how they continue to age so well sonically and lyrically
