I know this a video from 13 years ago but there is no way Clarke was a part-timer in the early stage of his career anyways.

Clarke was a serious and effective slow left-arm bowler who could arguably have made the team doing that and only that, had his attentions not been focussed elsewhere. There is a considerable number of international batsmen who bowled, in whatever style, seriously and well in the EARLY part of their careers, but then seemed very largely to give it up. Names which spring to mind - Hammond, Dexter, Barrington, Bell, Waugh and Waugh, Vaughan, Katich, Smith - it's a long list. And don't forget that Mike Atherton was a front-line legspinner at University and with Lancashire. What I suspect happens is that the body collects a portfolio of minor weaknesses over the duration of a career, particularly in the back region (Atherton, Clarke) which do not very much inhibit batting but cause the player, and team management, to manage his biomechanical stress load in order to continue an international batting career. Bowling, including spin bowling, is biomechanically quite complex. The niggles must mount up over the years, particularly with today's heavy international schedules, and something has to take a back seat - or that's how I read it anyway. An exception might be Joe Root, who carries on with his useful off spin seemingly indefinitely.

Didn't Clarke once take 6 for 9 against India? Does anyone have that video up?
