I appreciate your easy and calm speaking voice, as well as the well paced pauses between ideas, interspersed with silence, and just the sound of the tools being worked. Informative, trustworthy, educational!
Thanks Bruce. I learned the basics of leathcraft while in a VA hospital, 12 years ago. It is amazing to watch a professional and see what it is SUPPOSED to look like! Great video
Thanks for all your videos, I am brand new to leather work was given about 50 stamps a couple of swivel knives and a few other tools, I have learned a lot watching your videos and you have saved me some trial and error time, that's a beautiful boarder. Thanks again...Bill
You're an amazing artisan, I enjoy watching your videos. I'm a bladesmith and I also make my own sheaths. You've given me several design ideas to use. Thanks!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. I will certainly watch your videos and learn from you. It is much appreciated for you to take the time and effort to make these videos to share and teach others. Thank you
Love your videos it was like a message from the heavens i just barely purchased a very similar tool and was having a heck of a time around the curves.thx
Hello Bruce, I do a little bit of leather work, knife pouches, wallets, and a few more things, I would like to start putting stamps on my products, thank you for the helpful video! Liked and subscribed
Sub'd. I wish we were closer, I'd have you design a custom guitar strap for me. Just bought a Gretsch dobro, 10 lbs. and my back needs something to allow me to sit straight up to play it.
Great tutorial, real fun to watch from start to finish. I was wondering whether you ever go around back with a thin stamp and disconnect the serpentine edges completely from the borders, or if you leave it as is for aesthetic reasons.
having just bought some beginners tools I find that for the stamps provided I have to kit the stamp with 5 times the force you use. Now the leather isnt high quality but I shouldnt have to hit it as hard as I do just to get the pattern to show, I assume the tools are very inferior and think Ill return them for a better set
I was wondering if you could maybe do a tutorial on beveling, or shading . thank you I am starting out and find that I cant produce the patterns or the great looks that it seems so easy for any one else .
Hi, Wow it looks so easy, I have a d442 and when I hit the leather it doesn't get dark like yours, is it my way of hitting or is it my tool the problem thanks.
Hello, I have a question maybe you can help. I have a new leather shoulder holster which is made of good quality leather & is colored black. I wanted to use one of my personal stamps which is my logo & fighting Bee on the back center piece. The stamp is about 1inch in diameter all around not too big & it’s just the one. How would you recommend stamping colored pieces of leather such as mine?
Your control with your maul is very precise. What weight is it? Also how damp do you keep your leather? I absolutely love that modified tool you got there. Your boarder work is beautiful.
Bruce, have you tried bevelling all around the running W border? I usually do that right after cutting with the swivel knife, before stamping the border design. Also, a good idea th smooth the "bases" with a modelling spoon, at least I do
Very clever, attractive (catches the eye) boarder that you create with this modified stamp Bruce. When you stamp around the outer edge of a fairly tight curve and have to spread the stamp farther apart then normal (to allow adequate space for the opposing stamp) it sometimes leaves a little stem connecting the snake to the outside raised non-boarder area. Do you go back over these curved areas and tap these noticeable stems down with a small tool of some sort or is it just not necessary? Thanks for all your help with leather
I've played with a lot of my stamps and looked online for some more repeating type stamps but your stamp is really very nice. Thank you for sparking my curiosity. :) Gotta go play lol ATB Louise :)
Very beautiful work just subscribed.I have a question my tooling never looks that deep im using a rawhide mallet should I change to a maul like your using to go deeper
very beautiful border, one of my favorites so far... I am just getting into leatherworking and enjoy all the videos and tips I see. Thank you for sharing this. I know you said you modified this tool, i'm just wondering if the unmodified tool is fairly close to this finish?
I have a question about your choice of mauls? It would seem to me that the flat head maul would give a more consistent blow as opposed to the round maul. I would think the round maul would strike the stamping tool a glancing blow and leave an uneven impression. What are your thoughts on the different mauls?
Try several different mauls and go with the one you are most comfortable with. I started out using homemade square mauls and now I mostly use Maul Master II mauls in both sizes. After you do this for a while it really won't make any difference.
There are thousands of different leather stamps really. Each leather worker utilizes different ones for their unique carvings. Leather carving is almost like handwriting, each artist's work is unique

Bruce make me one ov them ol buddy
If you don't want to grind down a tool, try the D447. I'm going to buy that tool this payday. :-D
Thank you for sharing!! :-)
Hi, Wow it looks so easy, I have a d442 and when I hit the leather it doesn't get dark like yours, is it my way of hitting or is it my tool the problem thanks.
Your tool is fine I think the thickness of the leather really makes a big difference. The leather I am stamping is 13/15 saddle skirting.

The leather is slightly damp. I use both sizes of the Maul Master II leather mauls 22 ounce and the 2 lb. Thanks for watching.
Just went out and got one.
Bruce, have you tried bevelling all around the running W border?
I usually do that right after cutting with the swivel knife, before stamping the border design. Also, a good idea th smooth the "bases" with a modelling spoon, at least I do
Дмитрий Кривицкий Yes, I just tried it and it really looks good. Thanks for the tip. Bruce
Thanks looks awesome, I use this to help with my PTSD, V/R Hugo Melchor USN RET DAV
Beautiful border How did you modify the stamp to get that design?
Hi Bruce I have a piece of leather that I got real cheap but they have painted the top with silver spray paint what is best to remove it thanks
Muy bueno

Thanks for all your help with leather
+jeff byers (Primosand) I use Craftool bevelers B802 or B803 to smooth out the ends and the spots in between... Thanks Bruce
you can also use a modeling spoon to smooth down the little "stem"
.
I've played with a lot of my stamps and looked online for some more repeating type stamps but your stamp is really very nice. Thank you for sparking my curiosity. :)
Gotta go play lol ATB Louise :)
can you post a link to the stamp you use on the border in the very beginning please? thank you.
Very beautiful work just subscribed.I have a question my tooling never looks that deep im using a rawhide mallet should I change to a maul like your using to go deeper
Did you notice how THICK his leather was? Hint: it’s not your mallet that does that (you can always hit it harder)
Excellent
Are you planing on making a tool like that so it can be bought? Nice work Sir
I'm new to the craft and enjoy your videos. thank you for taking the time to share you knowledge. were is a good place to order stamps and tools?
