"Chui Chai Sming Phra Ram"
Dancer: Eak Arunphan, senior dance artiste, Office of Performing Arts
3rd biweekly "Sao Sanook" music and dance show by the Office of Performing Arts
June 10, 2023 at King Rama IX Royal Music Library. Bangkok
This solo piece presents the story of Sming Phra Ram, a character from "Rajadhiraj," a dance drama based on a Thai literary work of the same name at the heart of which is the 40 years' war between the Mon and the Burmese.
Sming Phra Ram (Smim Bayan) is a Mon warrior who becomes a prisoner-of-war of the Burmese at Ava. When a Chinese army threatens Ava, Sming Phra Ram volunteers to fight the best man from the Chinese side and wins. As his reward he is given the hand of an Ava princess and made the viceroy of Ava. His father-in-law, the king, also grants his wish that his past as a prisoner is never mentioned ever again. One fateful day, however, the king refers to him using this taboo word in a slip of the tongue, causing the humiliated Sming Phra Ram to return to his homeland leaving behind his wife and son.
