The Lopburi Dance
Presented by the Fine Arts Department's Office of Performing Arts
At an offering ceremony marking the return to Thailand of two sculptured stone lintels long missing from Buriram's Prasat Nong Hong and Sa Kaew's Prasat Khao Lon stone sanctuaries, on May 31, 2021 at the National Museum Bangkok.
The Lopburi Dance was a fitting choice for the occasion, as the returned artifacts date back to the Lopburi Period (11th-13th century AD), whose art is characterized by a synthesis of Dvaravati and Khmer forms and patterns.
The Lopburi Dance is one of a suite of dances created in the 1960s at the behest of then-Fine Arts Department director-general Mr. Dhanit Yupho to represent five periods in Thai history: Dvaravati, Srivijaya, Lopburi, Chiang Saen and Sukhothai. The music for the Lopburi Dance is by Master Montri Tramod, National Artist of Thailand; the choreography is by two dance masters, Mrs. Lamoon Yamakupt and Mrs. Chaloei Sukhavanija, National Artist of Thailand.
