I started playin' the harp in 1970. I had just graduated high school with no money to further my education I knew the draft would be hot on my tall. Grabbed some clothes and a sleepingbag my harp and set out hitch hiking across America. I wanted to see this land I was about to possibly sacrafice my life for. I would sit along side the road against mybackpack and practice my harp untila ride came along.. I was blowin' on my harp and the first car that came by stopped. He said I don't usually pick people up but I saw you playing the harmonica and I love the harmonic. It was unfortnate for this guy that I couldn't plat to well, but I found out to get rides faster pull that Harp and start wailing and dancing around the back pack. I was lucky on that trip because I met a lot of great people and avoided the draft for over a year and when I did enlist to get Army photo school at Ft. Monmouth NJ the war in Vietnam was ending and I was sent to West Berlin.

Marta; Not the best but one amoung many. You really need to get out there. I consider myself average and I can do this note for note. Please check out Sonny Terry (he stoled a lot of his style from him) Also check out; Kim Wilson, Paul Butterfield, Jason Rici, Little Walter, Sugar Blue, Sonnyboy Williamson, Buddy Greene (see his harmonica jam at Carnegie Hall live) James Cotton, Charlie Mcoy These are just a few on the list of the greatest.

same exact thing happened to me today with the Harp. You can get there though. I did the same thing when I started playing the piano. I listened to a lot of Chopin and it psyched me out, but I stuck with it, I ended up with a scholarship to the U of Oregon school of music. then I picked up the guitar after hearing Leo Kottke, I was bummed at how bad I sounded at first, but practice, practice, practice. I started getting calls from all sorts of venue's asking me to play. If you stick with it long enough you will start playing it rather than practicing it, and you'll realize how much joy it can bring. DONT GIVE UP!

I am 59 years young and retired and started 2 years ago. Takes a lot of practice. I started by listening to the old blues masters like Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin Wolf, Big Momma Thornton etc. Tried to copy the notes then realized I needed more harmonicas. 18 harmonicas later, mostly seydel I still have a long way to go but at least I can jam with some great hometown guitar players. As long as I have a drink or 2 to loose the stage fright.lol

Let me start out with I am sorry for the long dissertation.
I'm an old Diemaker from Detroit, got ended up in Flint. I worked the second shift and would hang out in the local bars in Fenton, Mi, after work. Well back in in the early 90's, there were three bars to go too. Mo' Doggies, Blaney's, and the Lake View, (we called it the snake view cause of the women that'd be there) Any way's, it was the Lake View I had the Blessing of God to hear a guy named Bill, who was invited on stage to play the mouth harp. Well, he needed help, ya see he had a bum leg, it was wooden, but didn't work to good. His wife would help him up to the stage and there would be a chair for him. He'd take his Harmonica out of his cigar box, where the others were, and wait for the band, depending on what they were going to play, (he had no idea), sometimes he would switch harmonica's. I had NEVER in my life heard such beauty from a mouth hard, up close and very personal. I gave him the nickname, "Bill the Cat", after the cartoon. and like the cartoon he died. I seen his wife in the local grocery store sometime ago and she told me Bill had passed. I am very blessed to have heard such feeling from a person through such a simple instrument. I have never heard a mouth harp artist that could hold a candle to Bill. God Bless you Bill and hold you near! Music, music, from their mouth to your ear. I am Blessed with that memory. Thank You Bill. And Thank You Juzzie, for the memory.

I have a " Hohner harp "-collection . A black leather box , inside coated /cushioned with red velvet. It contains 12 harps of all... er, well not all . But an equipment of the most usual melody keys.
    From " C / D / E / F / G / H....-major / ....A / D / E -minor, there are twelve harmonicas all together.
I started playing the harp when I was still a child and enjoyed playing very much.
I drove my mom to desperation. whenever I played but never...I cared about that. My dad encouraged me to continue as he played an instrument himself, a so called " wait-pipe " also known as "shawn".
I have improved my skills in the meantime, but I envy this guy here in this video for his variety and virtuosity. He does an excellent job.
Once upon a time I have tried to blow my harpes like he does, but next day my lips got swollen ....I looked in the mirror and saw a " widemouth-frog" :-)
I think it takes time and a hard constant training to reach such an amazing level.
One can do it with discipline and ambition. And some good harps- that's actually all you need.
    But no, that's not everything....what else ?
Well, a partner - husband or wife- to lend you a sympathic ear, and very very tolerant neighbors . lol :-)
I wish all the readers of my comment a nice sunny summer.
    Stay healthy everybody.
With best regards from Central Germany,
    Rainer
ps : to the English native speakers among us :
I beg your pardon for any mistakes. My English is fairly poor, I know.
My native language ist German, so please forgive me.
I shall improve my skills and language abilities..... step by step,
    Thanks for your understandig.
    Bye

      I already play the piano.
So it's essentially the same. Only one key at a time, and with your mouth.

personally it's not what I'd play, but I'd love to be able to get a few vocal 'whoops' in between notes like he does.
And yes a half decent instrument does make a difference, it's easier to learn with something that makes the music you're reading sound like how it should, if the manufacturer doesn't think it's worth their name it isn't worth your money.

I had never seen this extraordinary Australian artist, at first I thought he was American but when I saw his instruments I realized that he is Australian, really how extraordinary he is, I was inspired by my work as a sculptor and I focused a lot on my work listening to his beautiful melody , a big greeting from @tomdibujando
