    Thanks for the video. Recently replaced both belts on my TC-K611S that I have owned from new. However it wouldn't play for more than a second without stopping. Your suggestion to run the transport without a cassette in enabled me to see that the pinch roller was sticking. Took it out and discovered a bump on it. Removed bump with emery board and now it plays fine. I will be ordering a new roller. Couple of observations - transport is easily removed from just the 4 screws, cables and door plate - no need to off the units faceplate. Working out how to run the transport without a cassette inside wasn't obvious from the video. Thanks again.

    Thanks for this. It will be helpful because my very similar Sony TC-K620 has melted belts and I'm facing the same dismantling of the drive mechanism. I dread trying to get the pieces apart to clean up and install that smaller belt. But it's a thrift store deck that I got very cheap about 7-years ago. I played a few tapes, and then, sillily, let the unit sit sit for years. But I now know that Sony belts don't just lose tension, they decompose. Replacement belts should arrive early next week, and I will start unscrewing.

    Thanks Chas, really helped me fix my Sony deck - super useful. In the video you use a cross head screwdriver with quite a long shaft. Having the right tools makes a job much easier - just wondered where you'd got that one from and whether you worry about Japanese standards for screwdrivers on the Japanese Hi Fi stuff. Love the videos especially the electrical-mechanical items.

      @skettchboy Thanks for the compliment, glad you managed to fix your deck. The drivers were part of a 6 driver kit I was give back in the 90s, no idea where they came from. There are lots on e-bay and Amazon nowadays. I have no opinion on the screws used, they use so many different types.
      I have several vids mid production whilst I source parts. Hope to post more soon.

    Hello and God bless you. I've followed almost every step and the results are good. Still, I can hear a light strange noise by every rotation/revolution of the capstan. This brings a very slight but increased wow amd flutter.. Can you, please tell me what kind of lubricant you've used for the bearings? ( because I didn't had any, maybe the capstan bearing is to dry and If I use the Unit, I'll destroy/increase the tolerances..) Thanks in advance and thanks for the lesson. God bless you! Update: I've read some comments. I will buy the Molly grease. Thank you very much.

    • @ChasLarge

      I use molycote grease. Clean the flywheel in case anything is stuck on it. Check the pinchroller for dents, caused by the mech being left in play but not running for a long time, clean the belt with isopropyl.

    Hi,
    Your video is great !
    It really helped me to replace the belts of my Sony TC-K611S.
    When I was done with the belts I tested it and understand that I need to replace the pinch roller also.
    I've done it with a new one, but this crucial step of installing it back to the deck, is missing from your video.
    The problem I'm facing now is that when I insert a cassette and press play, it does does not play.
    The heads mechanism is not lifting up and the pinch roller is not moving and does not touch the capstain.
    The tape spins at higher speed also.
    Can you please help me understand what is going on ?
    Heads mechanism, including pinch roller does not move freely , with or without cassette inside.
    Thank you.

    • @ChasLarge
      @ChasLarge  2 роки тому +2

      Glad it was helpful. Might be the pinch roller is not the correct size, it could be too tall and the bearing is binding. Depending on how you replaced it, did it come with the bracket? was it an original part? Some replacements are not really the same as the original.

    Hi I have a SONY TC k611S .After years of storage I tried it out and found there was a terrible screeching noise coming from the motor .On opening it up I could see the drive belts had turned to mush. I managed to source a new motor and drive belts and after following your excellent video I manged to replace them. On trying the deck after assembly I found the cassette would not play . The door opened and closed ,it would fast forward and rewind but not play. Following your video I thought this could be due to a faulty pinch roller,so I sourced one and replaced it .However this made no difference it would still not play. Have you any ideas what else I could try or what the problem might be?

    • @ChasLarge
      @ChasLarge  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Norman, glad you've found the video useful. If you press play without a cassette in, does the capstan turn and does the pinch roller engage with the capstan? if not then it could be mechanical. If the mech does not load, it could be the cassette sensor switches which are above the cassette, there is I think one, that detects the cassette next to the record prevention and tape type switches, these could have poor contacts.

    • @normaninglis3937
      @normaninglis3937 3 роки тому

      @@ChasLarge When I try it without a cassette absolutely nothing happens. When a cassette is in the heads and pinch roller move up and appear to want to play but after about 3secs they come down again. I've looked at the 4 contact switches they appear to be ok and I have put pressure on them while pressing play but it still won't work.

    • @ChasLarge
      @ChasLarge  3 роки тому

      @@normaninglis3937 Hi Norman. OK. If you look at the vid at about 1:03:00 you'll see I simulate putting a cassette in by holding the switch which detects the cassette. You can then press play and it should engage the mech. If it stops playing after a few secs it could be the take up reel not turning which has a sensor and if this does not detect movement the system will stop. Also if the pinch roller has a dent in it as I had, then the tape is not pulled through and again the TU reel sensor reacts. So without a cassette if it continues to play, check the tape path and even the Supply reel which may be stiff due to old lubricant.

      @@normaninglis3937 I have very recently had success repairing this issue, after doing a belt change and finding I had your same problem. The problem seemed to be solved after cleaning the sensors that read the black and mirrored flanges behind the reels. You can see these sensors in 42.20 in the video, the black round units atop white stalks, also clean the mirrored flanges while you are in there. This solved the proble, for me after much trial and error.

    • @ChasLarge

      @@ChasLarge I finally got around to fixing (?) my cassette deck (Sony TC-WR97ES). I changed both belts and both pinch rollers. I correctly aligned the mode cam and put the unit back together. Everything works but when it’s playing and I want you to change directions, I hit the play button for the other direction, the tape head rotates 90 degrees and stops. The head doesn’t rotate all the way. Before the belt change, everything was working fine. I took it apart again. I noticed the tape head will turn fully when the mode cam is turned. Any ideas. Btw, my mechanism is exactly as the one in this video, so that helps. Great video! Cheers.

But when I take the cassette out and take my flat head screwdriver and push up on the tape sensor (the thing that selects what type the cassette is) the head and pinch roller both go all the way up as a functioning cassette deck should do. Any ideas what the issue might be?

      Hi Jesse, it's difficult to diagnose without seeing the unit but does the cassette play OK in another machine? If the cassette is warped it may not be locating in the door correctly. @@jessebrown6059 Hmmm, difficult. I can only guess that the mechanism is not fully engaging in Play. It may be down to the drive cam or part of the mech is broken. Without seeing it, it's impossible to say. Is the main drive belt OK, should be tight but with a small amount of flex, not stretchy. Maybe the mech grease has gone hard and needs disassembling and regreasing. Don't spray any lubricants in as this can cause untold problems.

    What Voltage is the bench power supply set at for testing ?

    • @ChasLarge
      @ChasLarge  3 роки тому +1

      Depends on what I'm testing, it's a Lavolta variable supply 0 - 30V so I adjust it for whatever I'm testing. The motors on this deck are specified as 12V but I would have underrun them at say 6V for testing, if the mech is jamming, underrunning allows them to stall rather than driving the mechanism to destruction.
