A similiar thing happened to me a few years ago. The security person that I talked to told me to be careful because the thieves will return in about 30 days figuring that you will replace you gear with brand new gear. Indeed, they did - however, we changed up our security and moved some of our gear locations so we did not suffer a second loss. Believe me, I know EXACTLY how you feel!
Good advice. thieves always return when they get a good score. My house was broken into years back. And when he returned a few nights later, I was waiting in the dark. It was a very bad night for him haha

The fact that they just left that _cheap_ lens is very weird. They either know about cameras, checked internet prices at the moment or directly know his gear. They also went straight for the katanas but not for the knives since the katanas are much more profit for the hassle that it is them being tracked compared to the knives. Their decisions seem quite interesting indeed.

Holy....aww man I'm really sorry to hear this happened to you :( Clearly someone knew and targeted you, not an opportunistic crime. 99% sure it's someone you know. I know it sucks and you don't want to release anything until everything's been replaced, but if you want, please know the production quality is really secondary to me. I wouldn't mind seeing you sharpen knives on a GoPro or smartphone video. So this doesn't need to kneecap your video schedule (again, only if you want to upload videos before replacement gear arrives). Kenneth Hwang i agree this is a premeditated heist. There is no way they would go through so much security so easily without prior planning. Plus why did they target you in particular. Basically its likely they watched some of your videos and found out where your studio was.

What general area are you in? Viewers can diligently scour craiglist, ebay and perhaps even local pawn shops for the missing gear. This will be a score they try to move fast. Has there been any work or service done in the building recently? Start there.

I've had this happen to me a few times, (once they stole all of my tools while I was at my brother's funeral!) and although the financial cost is a bummer, I remember feeling violated. Don't take it too personally, because it probably wasn't personal to the thieves. Take good care of yourself, and if it's any consolation, the video shot on your phone was quite good quality :)

I've never been ripped off that much so that's annoying, but what happened to you is enough to be angry and depressed and I can read your expression that not only did they rob you of equipment but robbed you of your trust in humanity. So sorry to hear this :( I’ve had a couple of experiences like this myself and it’s just the worst feeling. I really hope you are able to find a way forward. Absolutely yes to using your phone for a while! The camera quality of the videos are only a small part of what we watch your channel for.
This really sucks, but stick with your calm approach and just be thorough on your inventory and then go to police and then insurance in that order. Lenses will be easier to track due to serial numbers. Plus, standing invite if you're ever in Northeast Ohio to come over and sharpen at our house. We'll make you and your family some yummy food. 👍

I came in to ask a question, and feel it’s a bit out of place now. In case you want content for a Q&A video, here it goes. I’m new to the channel and new to good cooking knives. I notice a recurring theme on your favorite knives of the year videos. Yaxell knives, especially the Enso HD and SG2 series, as well as the Dragon. I got a Enso HD Gyuto based on your past recommendations and I couldn’t be happier. I wonder, however, what is it about these Yaxell knives that make like them so much, which in turn lead you to recommend them so often? I also got a Shun Classic Utility knife and a Tojiro paring knife. The Shun has a slightly better edge out of the box (very marginally), but I was able to make the Enso HD match the Shun edge following your sharpening tutorial videos with a King Deluxe 1000 and King splash n go 6000. Took me way longer than it would take someone more experienced, I made it worse before I made it better, and I got some scratches on the side of the knife, but that’s all part of the learning process. I’m just left wondering what is it about them that make them such amazing knives. My only regret is maybe not going up one tier with the SG2, which leads me to my next question. VG10 vs SG2, is there a performance or durability difference? Anyways, I’m not expecting this to be answered anytime soon, but left it here just in case it helps bring you a sense of normalcy and content for a next video. The important thing now is your financial and emotional recovery from this. All the best and please stay positive and don’t let this event poison you.
You are so calm and relaxed, it's actually impressive how calm you are, if this happened to me I would be trying to find that person with violent intentions in mind.
Its easy to say "this are only things", because there is the feeling that a stranger invaded your personal space, went through your stuff and took what he liked. We had something like you experienced here every year as long as we had the gravel plant. And they often destroyed lots of stuff because they couldn't find anything of worth. You are blessed that those thugs "only" broke into your office on their search for gold bars you store in your Office. The thing is, that they stole equipment that is worth 25.000 USD, and they are lucky if they get 2.000 USD when they sell it. I hope that everybody who is able, who can afford it, is helping you via Gofundme so that you are able to get new equipment. Or that those thugs get cought and you get your stuff back. To go through something like that and take a step back and talk for a few moments about what you ARE thankful for shows great emotional intelligence and strength. This is a small shitty bump in the road for someone strong like you.
My apartment was broken into a few years back and had lots of things stolen. I really feel for you. I'm thankful it was an office and not your home. It took at least a year to feel "normal" again. Adding a simple wireless security system might be worth looking into. I use Simplisafe now myself for my workshop for the peace of mind. I added one of their WIFI cameras as well which uploads everything to the cloud and they can detect and act as a motion detector as well

Any tool Mark's on the computer room door? I noticed a keypad for entry. Who else has the combo? Is there memory in it? Does a cleaning crew service your offices? Most likely suspect has their own building access from outside already.
As someone that’s into lock sports, I went down that rabbit hole and got extremely paranoid. After practicing for a few months, I’m confident in my skills to open most residential door locks. I don’t know how they broke in but don’t rely on regular door locks! They’re comically easy to pick open. And most digital locks have a physical key override. Also, invest in at least Nest or Ring with alerts. Insure your expensive gear. Register camera gear on Lenstag. Personally, I invested in an $3K AMSEC safe and have it bolted down to store all my valuables and digital backups. I’m confident that the safe would hold up to a typical break in. Good luck with your recovery. Hope fortune turns around for you.

I know it sucks and you don't want to release anything until everything's been replaced, but if you want, please know the production quality is really secondary to me. I wouldn't mind seeing you sharpen knives on a GoPro or smartphone video. So this doesn't need to kneecap your video schedule (again, only if you want to upload videos before replacement gear arrives). Best of luck to you getting back up and running (and hopefully they catch the perps). We'll be here for you when you're ready.

Viewers can diligently scour craiglist, ebay and perhaps even local pawn shops for the missing gear. This will be a score they try to move fast. Has there been any work or service done in the building recently? Start there.

I've had this happen to me a few times, (once they stole all of my tools while I was at my brother's funeral!) and although the financial cost is a bummer, I remember feeling violated. Don't take it too personally, because it probably wasn't personal to the thieves. Take good care of yourself, and if it's any consolation, the video shot on your phone was quite good quality :)

I've never been ripped off that much so that's annoying, but what happened to you is enough to be angry and depressed and I can read your expression that not only did they rob you of equipment but robbed you of your trust in humanity. I’ve had things stolen before and it’s the opposite of fun. The most lasting artifact of theft is the possibility of having it alter how you think about or interact with people in general. It’ll leave a bad taste in your mouth for a while. That’s a given. But the worst outcome of a break-in like this is to have it poison your thoughts with other people, who had nothing to do with the stupid selfish actions of a tiny number of miscreants who ruin everything they touch.
Your giving and talented contributions to life are obvious for us all to see and hear in each video you shoot, edit, and upload. That’s what is important and, we hope, you can get back to very soon.

This really sucks, but stick with your calm approach and just be thorough on your inventory and then go to police and then insurance in that order. Lenses will be easier to track due to serial numbers.

I came in to ask a question, and feel it’s a bit out of place now. In case you want content for a Q&A video, here it goes. I’m new to the channel and new to good cooking knives. I notice a recurring theme on your favorite knives of the year videos. Yaxell knives, especially the Enso HD and SG2 series, as well as the Dragon. I got a Enso HD Gyuto based on your past recommendations and I couldn’t be happier. I wonder, however, what is it about these Yaxell knives that make like them so much, which in turn lead you to recommend them so often? I also got a Shun Classic Utility knife and a Tojiro paring knife. The Shun has a slightly better edge out of the box (very marginally), but I was able to make the Enso HD match the Shun edge following your sharpening tutorial videos with a King Deluxe 1000 and King splash n go 6000. Took me way longer than it would take someone more experienced, I made it worse before I made it better, and I got some scratches on the side of the knife, but that’s all part of the learning process. I’m just left wondering what is it about them that make them such amazing knives. My only regret is maybe not going up one tier with the SG2, which leads me to my next question. VG10 vs SG2, is there a performance or durability difference?
Anyways, I’m not expecting this to be answered anytime soon, but left it here just in case it helps bring you a sense of normalcy and content for a next video. Its easy to say "this are only things", because there is the feeling that a stranger invaded your personal space, went through your stuff and took what he liked.
We had something like you experienced here every year as long as we had the gravel plant. And they often destroyed lots of stuff because they couldn't find anything of worth.
You are blessed that those thugs "only" broke into your office on their search for gold bars you store in your Office.
The thing is, that they stole equipment that is worth 25.000 USD, and they are lucky if they get 2.000 USD when they sell it.

To go through something like that and take a step back and talk for a few moments about what you ARE thankful for shows great emotional intelligence and strength. This is a small shitty bump in the road for someone strong like you.
My apartment was broken into a few years back and had lots of things stolen. I really feel for you. I'm thankful it was an office and not your home. It took at least a year to feel "normal" again. Adding a simple wireless security system might be worth looking into. I use Simplisafe now myself for my workshop for the peace of mind. I added one of their WIFI cameras as well which uploads everything to the cloud and they can detect and act as a motion detector as well

Any tool Mark's on the computer room door? I noticed a keypad for entry. Who else has the combo? Is there memory in it? Does a cleaning crew service your offices? Most likely suspect has their own building access from outside already.
As someone that’s into lock sports, I went down that rabbit hole and got extremely paranoid. After practicing for a few months, I’m confident in my skills to open most residential door locks. I don’t know how they broke in but don’t rely on regular door locks! They’re comically easy to pick open. And most digital locks have a physical key override. Also, invest in at least Nest or Ring with alerts. Insure your expensive gear. Register camera gear on Lenstag. Personally, I invested in an $3K AMSEC safe and have it bolted down to store all my valuables and digital backups. I’m confident that the safe would hold up to a typical break in. Good luck with your recovery. Hope fortune turns around for you.

Sucks this happened to you, good to see your not giving up and will continue making quality content. Maybe you can contact lockpicking lawyer on UA-cam and ask him about what kind of locks are worthwhile, after watching his channel for a while it is eye opening as to how easy locks and doors can be picked/bypassed. Crazy how little security they give us.
