- We’re living in a time of economic babble, where politicians and economists throw out words like “reform,” “privatize,” and “austerity” to prop up corrupt capitalist opportunists. So says our guest this week, economist Michael Hudson, author of J is for Junk Economics.
Plus, a report from Diverse Filmmaker’s Alliance on the Yemeni bodega workers who went on strike in New York to protest the Muslim Ban. And Laura’s F-Word on why Donald Trump’s new budget isn’t about cuts -- it’s about conversions. The budget wants to convert public dollars into private funding for military research and spending, for the only government apparatus that never gets audited.

MAN... Michael Hudson is such a man of truth
It is a wonderful, wonderful education. The citizens have been taught "Big is Better", "Private is better than public, and cheaper. If all of this was true, where are the industrial leaders of the 60's. Sears, IBM, GE, Westinghouse, Xerox, Kodac, those brands we all grew up with. It seems the citizens have been socialized by the media. They do not understand everything most people think they own, the house mortgaged, car on a lease, credit cards for vacation, the education you cannot get rid of. There is nothing left to extract, it is like a rent economy. This man is smart, now it is time for you to get smart too. It is going to take lots of people, time for an economic revolution.
People are marching away from buying since they have less and less disposable income. Marching away from lots of institutional markets. Like the IMF loading countries with debt for blackmail we are loading up on military budgets to drive privatization. The stock market profits are also based on outsourcing and layoffs and doubling and tripling worker duties with non-experts handling other experts duties.
This cannot go on forever with declining sales and use of services.
There is no chance of a complex system learning to become sustainable. They have become addicted to excessive profits for all the rich and endowed institutions feeding on it.

Not true Bob, look up Prof. Steven Keen, Richard Wolffe and Ann Pettifor. Although not an economist, Chris Hedges is great commentator on Neoliberalism.
Also include economists who have studied the analysis of Henry George: Mason Gaffney, Fred Foldvary, Nicolaus Tideman, among others.
There are plenty of heterodox economists that are just as good as Hudson. His colleagues at University of Missouri, other post-keynesians, Europeans like Varoufakis and Piketty, Keen, Ha Joon Chang and staff at the new school like Foley and Shaikh.
But yeah in general, most professors are absolutely horrible.
In addition to the economists already mentioned, read sociologist Vincenzo Ruggiero, who documents in all his books how neoliberalism employs all the same dirty schemes and violent tactics of organized crime. See for example The Crimes of the Economy; Crime and Markets; Dirty Money: On Financial Delinquency; and many other books.

Love this video; however, I can't help but wonder why most of the bodegas in NY were owned by one particular section of the population that is immigrant based. That again shows significance to the problem of capitalism where a lot of the owners are foreigners who have more opportunity when they get here than the underprivileged that have always been here. The system must be replaced!
There was an earlier turning point than 2008. This occurred during the Carter years: the creation of the first money market mutual fund. This seemingly benign new investment vehicle led to the demise of the savings and loans and savings banks. The U.S. was started on a long journal of deregulation of the nation's financial services sector that led to 2008.
@@Jj-gi2uv A long and very destructive pattern of deregulation and lax enforcement of the laws remaining on the book. I agree that repeal of Glass Steagall signed by Clinton was a major step in the direction of monopolistic privilege in the financial sector.
Can i ask, why are people not switching on to this economic scam
they are....its just that most people think its not very interesting and dont pursue it , they have no interest in such matters and leave it to the bankers and the economists...they dont know that, that attitude is like allowing the police to police themselves.

I have a question about "economic rent" with relation to the idea of handing such financial gains to the government to ensure people earn a living by working and contributing to society in a meaningful way. With 8 trillion US dollars missing from the military budget and the President asking for more, I don't think that would be a wise choice. Wouldn't it be more effective to eliminate specific forms of economic rent rather than enable an already out of control government? Maybe I am missing something?
Jamband BillyD Also the point is that we would have a government that was not corrupt and ran by outsiders and so would you in USA in this future. The rentiers ARE those who control every Western government and without their control over us we could once again run our own countries for our own gain.
Recommended additional reading is a book co-authored in 1994 by economists Mason Gaffney, Fred Harrison and Kris Feder: "The Corruption of Economics." These authors provide a good deal of the detail of much of what Michael Hudson argues.

Congress votes and the money appears. Otherwise I offer the Transcendia Insurodollar. It is based on human capital. Real business is insured. You have value as you had as a chattel slave or wage slave. Why let others take a mortgage on you? Whole life from birth and shared equity for the kids till they start paying because they have been kept healthy and made smart. My nation is a nation of airports. It is my model.

Why does he sound like a socialist using capitalism buzzwords? Maybe I'm different because I have marketable skills and not some useless college degree in underwater basket weaving. Insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results and we need to be done with any form of socialism.
